According to Joe Biden, Anyone Who Defies a Congressional Subpoena Should Be Prosecuted

By refusing to appear before the House Oversight Committee for a standard closed-door deposition, Hunter Biden is widely expected to be held in contempt of Congress. And if we take Joe Biden's words at face value, the president thinks his son should be prosecuted for it.

On Wednesday, instead of complying with the committee's subpoena, he gave a whiny press conference, during which he played the victim card like a petulant child.

He accused Republicans of cherrypicking and fabricating evidence against him and denied any "financial involvement" by his father, Joe Biden, in his foreign business dealings. Hunter curiously moved the goalposts, considering that for a long time, the narrative was that Joe Biden never even spoke with his son about his business, and now suddenly, he seems to be conceding more significant involvement.

But regardless of his son's reasons for refusing to comply with the subpoena, Joe Biden is on record saying that anyone who doesn’t comply with a congressional subpoena should be prosecuted.

It’s true. In October 2021, Biden urged the Department of Justice to prosecute anyone who defied congressional subpoenas from the January 6 Select Committee.

“Mr. President, what’s your message to people who defy Congressional subpoenas on the January 6 Committee?” asked CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins.

“I hope that the committee goes after them and holds them accountable criminally,” Biden told her.

"Should they be prosecuted by the Justice Department?” she asked in a follow-up.

“I do, yes,” Biden insisted.

Do you think he’s singing the same tune now? To be consistent, he should be, but let’s get real here. One journalist asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about Hunter’s defiance of the congressional subpoena on Wednesday, but she refused to answer.

"Is the President okay with his son defying a congressional subpoena?” the reporter asked.

"I’m just not going to get into — into specifics on that. I would have to re- — would have to refer you to the President’s — not the President, but Hunter’s personal—representatives. He is a private citizen, so I’m just not going to get into it."

For our VIPs: Did Hunter Biden Just Make a Huge Mistake?

A reporter asked Jean-Pierre when Joe Biden last spoke with his son Hunter in an apparent attempt to find out if Joe Biden knew his son intended to skip the deposition. Jean-Pierre deflected again, saying, "I mean, I’m also not going to get into private conversation[s] that the President has with his family. We’ve been pretty consistent. That’s nothing new. We’re just not going to get into it from here."

And Hunter Biden did exactly that.

Hunter Biden has defied his scheduled closed-door deposition on Capitol Hill with the House Oversight Committee.

Hunter instead delivered a public statement on Wednesday outside of Capitol Hill, claiming the investigation into his business dealings is a move to undermine his father’s tenure as president.

“I’m here today to acknowledge that I’ve made mistakes in my life,” he said, flanked by his lawyer and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), “but I’m also here today to correct how the MAGA Right has portrayed me for their political purposes.”

“For six years, I’ve been the target of the unrelenting Trump attack machine shouting, where’s Hunter?” he added. “Here’s my answer, I’m right here.”

Hunter has said he wants to testify at a public hearing to answer questions from House Republicans because in private could give way to selective leaks.

This comes after Republicans have rejected Hunter Biden’s offer to appear for an initial public hearing, saying they want him to testify privately first.

The inquiry is investigating the Biden family as a whole. First, whether President Biden used his power for financial gain for himself and his family, whether President Biden used his power in office to influence the Department of Justice to help Hunter avoid criminal charges, and how Hunter was involved in the family’s business dealings.

Meanwhile, Hunter faces tax evasion charges, as well as a separate gun charge by special counsel David Weiss.

Additionally, Hunter said his father was not involved in any of his business dealings. “Not as a practicing lawyer, as a board member of Burisma not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home nor abroad and certainly not as an artist,” he said.

“But to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd. It’s shameless,” he said. “There’s no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business.”

The Oversight and Judiciary panels didn’t know on Tuesday night if Hunter would show up for the closed-door deposition.

The House is set to vote on Wednesday to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

BREAKING: HISTORIC! House Committee Subpoenas President Biden’s Brother, Son

AP Photo/Evan Vucci
New Rules alert! In a move that was once unthinkable but is now par for the course in the banana republic formerly known as the United States, the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee has issued subpoenas to President Joe Biden's immediate family members

"House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) today issued subpoenas to President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, brother, James Biden, and Biden family associate, Rob Walker, to appear for depositions," the committee announced in a press release on Wednesday. "Chairman Comer also requested additional members of the Biden family and their associates appear for transcribed interviews. Chairman Comer plans to send additional subpoenas and transcribed interview requests later this week."

According to the Oversight Committee's Twitter/X account, those additional subpoenas will go to:

  • Sara Jones Biden (wife of Joe Biden's brother, James)
  • Hallie Biden (widow of Joe Biden's deceased son, Beau, and erstwhile slam-piece of Hunter Biden)
  • Elizabeth Secundy (Hallie Biden's older sister, also erstwhile slam-piece of Hunter Biden)
  • Melissa Cohen (wife and current slam-piece of Hunter Biden)
  • Tony Bobulinski (Hunter Biden's former business partner)

Recognizing the Historic! nature of the move, the committee commemorated the occasion by posting a video online of Comer signing the subpoenas. I am embedding it here so you can enjoy it as much as I did:

“The House Oversight Committee has followed the money and built a record of evidence revealing how Joe Biden knew, was involved, and benefited from his family’s influence peddling schemes," Comer is quoted as saying in the press release. "Now, the House Oversight Committee is going to bring in members of the Biden family and their associates to question them on this record of evidence. Unlike the many lies President Biden told the American people about his family’s business schemes, bank records don’t lie. These records reveal how the Bidens sold Joe Biden around to the world to benefit the Biden family, including Joe Biden himself, to the detriment of U.S. interests. The House Oversight Committee, along with the Committees on Judiciary and Ways and Means, will continue to follow the facts and deliver the transparency and accountability that the American people demand and deserve.”

The statement alleges that the crooked clan hoovered up over $24 million through its convoluted network of shell companies over a period of five years, "including millions of dollars from China, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and Kazakhstan."

It will be interesting to see if the lamestream media covers this Historic! development with the same fervor and credulousness as it has every move made by Biden's weaponized justice system against his chief political rival, former President Donald Trump.
