트럼프 “北, 미국 위협하면 화염과 분노에 직면할 것”
Prior to North Korea’s alarming announcement,… U.S. President Trump
had said Pyongyang had better not make any more threats against
Washington — or else it would be met with “fire, fury and power.”
With
tensions nearing boiling point,… U.S. Secretary of State Rex
Tillerson is touring Asia to gather allies in America’s push to further
pressure the regime.
Yu Joonhee reports. The war of words between
Washington and Pyongyang is intensifying,… with North Korea saying
this week… the U.S. would face revenge and “pay dearly”, for leading
UN sanctions against the regime.
However, President Trump, who is
currently on a working vacation at his private golf resort in New
Jersey… wasn’t about to be intimidated, firing back with threatening
comments of his own. “North Korea best not make any more threats to
the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world
has never seen. He has been very threatening… beyond a normal
statement, and as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly
power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.”

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson,… was in Bangkok Tuesday,
where he pressed Thailand to curb its business ties with North Korea.
Washington’s
top diplomat is urging Thailand,… to crack down on shell companies in
the country that are operated by Pyongyang… while tightening visa
requirements for North Korean nationals.
Tillerson is on a
three-nation Asia tour to drum up support for more pressure on North
Korea,… having also attended the ASEAN Regional Forum in the
Philippines, over the weekend.
At the conclusion of that security
meeting, the ASEAN bloc of nations released a statement… urging
Pyongyang to fully comply with UN Security Council resolutions.
Expressing “grave concerns” over the regime’s latest actions,… it also
called for a full denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,… and the
easing of tensions, to create favorable conditions for future dialogue.

Tillerson: North Korean leader didn’t understand diplomatic language – BBC News

North Korea has said it is considering carrying out missile strikes on the US Pacific territory of Guam.
The
North’s official news agency said on Tuesday the plan involved firing
medium-to-long-range rockets at Guam, where US strategic bombers are
based.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, flying into Guam, said there was no imminent threat from North Korea.
He also defended President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday threatened Pyongyang with “fire and fury” .
Mr
Tillerson said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un did not understand
diplomatic language, and a strong message was needed that he would
understand.
“I think the president just wanted to be clear to the
North Korean regime that the US… will defend itself and its allies,”
he said.
The exchanges mark a sharp rise in rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang, but China has urged calm.
