THE MESSIANIC TABERNACLE EXPERIENCE HOSTED BY DEBRA GROLLER MINISTRIES AT CAMP HALUWASA, HAMMONTON, NEW JERSEY

The interest in Messianic/Hebraic roots, history and experiential religious practices such as the Seder meal has grown tremendously. Its popularity can be credited no doubt to the desire of postmodern Christians and others for the next great mystical experience, signs and wonders, and of course non-doctrinal, non-dogmatic, non-judgmental religion, devoid of the Biblical focus on Jesus Christ alone, or anything else related to the Protestant Reformation, or the constraints of the five solas.
So, true to its signs and wonders theology and Messianic purposes, Debra Groller Ministries (Pentecostal/Word of Faith) of Deptford, NJ, will be hosting “The Tabernacle Experience” at Christian Camp Haluwasa, Hammonton, New Jersey, http://christian-camping.com/, September 14-22, 2013. The Tabernacle Experience is another ministry of First Presbyterian (Reformed/Covenantal) Church of Florence, South Carolina, http://www.florencefirst.org/tabernacle_experience.html, and is described here: http://www.tabernacleexperience.com/journey.shtml, and below in their words:

“It is our mission to provide a life-size interactive Tabernacle of The Wilderness to

Communities, Churches and Individuals across the United States revealing Jesus the Christ in every aspect of the Spiritually impacting, Life Changing narrated driven journey.”

“Your Journey Awaits!

The Tabernacle Experience is not a museum. It is not a theatre production.
The Tabernacle Experience is an Encounter with the Living God!
One step inside the Tabernacle Courtyard will translate you into Old Testament times. You will experience a day in the life of an Old Testament priest as you engage in the duties and rituals within the Tabernacle.
First you will be ‘clothed’ in the White Linen Garment of the priest. At the Altar of Burnt Offering you will lay your sacrifice on it’s consuming fire. You’ll approach the Laver and wash your hands in preparation for the work of The LORD.  At the Lampstand you’ll light an oil lamp and participate in Communion at The Table of Bread. The smoke rising at The Altar of Incense will heighten your senses and remind you of your prayers ascending to the very throne of God. As you draw back the Curtain and enter The Most Holy Place your journey will culminate before the Ark of The Covenant and The Mercy Seat.
The truths of the Tabernacle are life changing. The Tabernacle Experience is a tangible, multi-sensory encounter that will stir your emotions and faith in the person of Jesus Christ.
Did you know Jesus said that the Scriptures point to him?
“If you had believed Moses you would have believed me because he wrote about me!”
Isn’t this awesome?  The Old Testament Scriptures point directly to Christ! The Scriptures concerning the Tabernacle are no exception.
Just a short time after His resurrection, Jesus met two disciples on the road to Emmaus and joined them on their walk.  Jesus inquired why they were so sad and down and out. With heavy hearts they shared why they were filled with sorrow and disappointment. The very man they had trusted and believed in to be the Messiah was now dead. When the disciples arrived at their destination they invited Jesus into their home to share a meal and He accepted. They continued to engage in conversation and Jesus began rehearsing the Scriptures with them beginning with Moses and all the Prophets. He explained all the things concerning Himself. When Jesus had departed they said to one another, ‘Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” This is our prayer for you; that your heart will burn within you as you are tenderly escorted through The Tabernacle Experience by your High Priest Jesus.
You will be ushered out of the ordinary and into His extraordinary presence.
The narrated journey through the Tabernacle Experience is individual, private and intimate. The Tabernacle Experience is simple, yet utterly profound. The LORD’S profound Love, Compassion and Mercy towards us is evident in every aspect of The Tabernacle. His plan for our redemption is revealed and His desire to live among us is evident.
Our Mission and His Leading
It is our mission to travel from location to location bringing a life-size Tabernacle of The Wilderness and the full Spiritual impact it brings revealing Jesus the Christ in every aspect.”

The founder of “The Tabernacle Experience” is Jeanne Whittaker, who in her own words, describes her mystical experiences of being “whispered” to by a spirit entity who she believed to be God Himself saying ‘Bring Israel to them, build my Tabernacle” here: http://www.tabernacleexperience.com/story.shtml.
Whittaker herself describes what her vision was in this video:

RON CANTOR: “WHEN GENTILES FORGET JEWISH ROOTS, JEWS START DYING”

A Messianic/Hebraic ministry called “Messiah’s Mandate” headed by Ron Cantor www.messiahsmandate.org,  is purporting to claim that the identity of Jesus was robbed of His Jewishness in his book “Identity Theft”, and therefore should be called Yeshua by Christians and Jews. Likewise, Cantor claims that all the apostles, Mary, Peter, Paul etc. were renamed by transliteration from Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek.
In “Eight Reasons Gentiles Should Care About the Jewish Roots”, http://messiahsmandate.org/category/jewish-roots/, Cantor attempts to place a load of guilt on Christians by alleging that when such roots are not continuously remembered and honored, certain unfortunate consequences result almost by default: accusations of Jewish deicide (killing of God), holocausts (i.e. death of Jews), replacement theology (Church replaces Israel), Jews ignorant of their own Messiah, Christians being “cut off” for mistreating Jews (misuse of Romans 11:17-23). Other spurious claims are that Jesus will come back as a Jew to Jerusalem, and “no Israel equals no salvation”.
This is just one more Messianic ministry attempting to convince Christians they are and have been neglecting their Jewish roots, and that they ought to reform their thinking, beliefs and worship to be more Jewish, and to help Israel accept Jesus as Messiah.

OBAMA BASHES PRO-LIFE AMERICANS, PRAISES PLANNED PARENTHOOD DURING SPEECH: ‘God Bless You’

Christian News Network reports: http://christiannews.net/2013/04/27/obama-bashes-pro-life-americans-praises-planned-parenthood-during-speech-god-bless-you/.

The New American blasted Obama at: http://thenewamerican.com/culture/faith-and-morals/item/15237-obama-addresses-pro-abortion-gala-condemns-efforts-to-protect-unborn.
Quote from this article:
Ridiculing the over 40 states where lawmakers have introduced or passed laws to protect the unborn, Obama quipped to the supportive chuckles of the pro-abortion audience: “When you read about these laws you want to check the calendar. You want to make sure you’re still living in 2013. Forty years after the Supreme Court affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to privacy, including the right to choose [abortion], we shouldn’t have to remind people that when it comes to a woman’s health, no politician should get to decide what’s best for you.””

POPE SAYS JESUS CAN ONLY BE FOUND WITHIN CATHOLIC (MOTHER) CHURCH

Christian News Network reports here: http://christiannews.net/2013/04/25/pope-francis-during-feast-of-st-george-mass-it-is-not-possible-to-find-jesus-outside-the-church/.

Mike Gendron of Proclaiming the Truth Ministries, a former Roman Catholic, said that certain key words in the address indicated that the Pope was referring to the Catholic religion. “He must be referring to the Roman Catholic Church since he said, ‘the Mother Church which gives us the faith that is our identity,’” Gendron told Christian News Network. “So often when we witness to Catholics and ask if they are a Christian they say, ‘No, I am a Catholic.’ That is their identity. We know that the true Church does not give anyone faith. It is given by God as a gift of His grace.”

PASTOR DAVID ASHCRAFT OF LCBC MANHEIM, PA PLAGIARIZES ANDY STANLEY SERMON FOR EASTER SERVICE

It is evident that David Ashcraft, senior pastor of LCBC Church (Lives Changed by Christ) of Manheim, PA, http://www.lcbcchurch.com/, has brazenly plagiarized a sermon for his recent Easter service, once given by Andy Stanley titled “The Juno Dilemma”. For the most part this was a word for word plagiarization.
This is the six campus mega-church of about 11,000 members which recently was joined by the Branch Creek Community Church www.branchcreek.org, of Harleysville, PA headed by Craig Bishop,

whose leadership was originally composed of disaffected, parting of the ways Mennonites from the mother Franconia Mennonite Church & Conference, among other Mennonite churches in the Souderton, Montgomery County, PA area. UPDATES ON BOY SCOUTS HOMOSEXUAL POSITIONS

Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality, www.aftah.org, has an important update regarding the Boy Scouts new positions about homosexuality within its ranks:

Boy Scout’s Treacherous “Compromise” … Splitting the Baby?

Dear Readers,

The Boy Scouts of America’s leadership’s shocking attempt to accommodate homosexuality has generated a huge conservative backlash across the nation — which hopefully will stop this unconscionable betrayal — in spite of the BSA’s actions.  Yesterday, I did an interview with the national Christian station WVCY America, which you can listen to by clicking HERE. (You can buy a copy of the interview online at WVCY through this link.)  The good news is already the BSA is retreating by ditching the preposterous idea of allowing openly homosexual adult Scoutmasters.  However, the new “compromise” (allowing homosexual Boy Scouts) is unworkable, as WVCY’s Jim Schneider and I discuss on the program.
The second item below is an excerpt from a superb column by WND columnist Jane Chastain, who eviscerates the Scouts’ foolish “compromise” — which, if enacted, could destroy the Scouts as we know them. (In Canada, the “gaying” of the Scouts led to its membership plummeting.)  Note how Jane confidently asserts that “homosexuality is a choice.”  Yes, it is: we are all responsible for our sexual behaviors.  “Sexual orientation” is an artificial construct designed to help normalize sexual perversion (sort of like the words “gay” and “homophobia”).  Always remember: homosexuality is not Who You Are; it’s What You Do — and I can’t imagine anything more disruptive to the Scouts than a bunch of “gay” Boy Scouts talking up their deviant “sexuality” to other boys!  Shame on the Boy Scouts’ for bowing to political correctness!
TAKE ACTION: Follow this WVCH link to help YOUR local Boy Scout Council stand up for “moral straightness” at the BSA meeting in Texas May 22-24.  Have a great weekend! Thank you. — Peter LaBarbera,www.AmericansForTruth.com
PS. Today I was interviewed by American Family Association’s “One News Now” regarding the Mormon Church PRAISING the BSA’s fatally flawed “compromise.”  It seems that the LDS Church (which has always been outside of biblical Christianity) is now rapidly abandoning Truth on the homosexual issue — a development that will greatly affect the pro-family landscape on same-sex issues.  It is a pity that the Mormons, who often led (and hugely funded) the cultural battle to preserve natural marriage, are caving in to the homosexualist lobby.  The AFA interview will be posted HERE.

WVCY ‘Crosstalk’ 4/25/2013 Boy Scouts Propose to Accept Homosexual Scouts–Peter LaBarbera CD

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW HERE: http://67.36.84.226/crosstalk2/ct130425.mp3
Peter LaBarbera is Founder and President of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality.  His organization is dedicated to exposing the homosexual activist agenda.
The Boy Scouts recently released a proposed resolution to accept openly homosexual scouts.  The resolution will be voted on by their 1,400 voting members during their 2013 national annual meeting that will take place May 22-24 at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

Why the push to incorporate homosexuality into the Boy Scouts?  Peter believes the Boy Scouts panicked.  He pointed to pro-homosexual CEO’s who are big donors that wanted to see the Boy Scouts implement the same changes that have taken place in their corporations.

Jim then read the resolution that they will be voting on in May.  The final statement of the resolution contradicts other statements made in their “whereas” clauses because what happens to homosexual scouts that turn 18 and want to be leaders?

Jim also discussed related news from New Zealand, France, Rhode Island, Illinois and Minnesota.

Jane Chastain: Boy Scouts Want to ‘Split the Baby’

The Boy Scouts' proposed compromise implies that an openly homosexual boy can still be "morally straight."

The Boy Scouts’ proposed compromise implies that an openly homosexual boy — embracing a deviant sexual identity – can still be “morally straight” and faithful to God.E

The following is excerpted from a column published April 24, 2013 in WND.com (World Net Daily)Jane Chastain is right on, as she usually is. To listen to a radio interview I did yesterday on WVCY America on the Boy Scouts of America’s absurd and treacherous “compromise,” go HERE). Keep fighting! We can save the Boy Scouts in spite of their corrupt leaders by winning the Scout Council vote in May. – Peter LaBarbera, www.AFTAH.org

Boy Scouts Want to ‘Split the Baby’

WND Exclusive: Jane Chastain predicts end of organization if latest proposal on ‘gays’ is passed
By Jane Chastain
King Solomon was considered one of the wisest men in the world. According to the Bible, when two women came before him fighting over a baby, both claiming to be its mother, Solomon ordered that the child be cut in half with a sword. One woman was perfectly satisfied with his decision, but when the other offered to give up the child in order to save him, Solomon knew who the real mother was and gave the child to her.
The leadership of the Boy Scouts of America has proposed a similar arrangement in the effort to satisfy its members, volunteers and donors over the issue of admitting open homosexuals into its ranks.
The proposal, which will be voted on May 24, is to admit homosexual young people into Scouting, while keeping the ban in place that prevents homosexuals from serving as staff or adult leaders. This proposal satisfies no one and, if it goes through, will mean the death of Scouting as we know it.
To pretend that this baby can survive is, at best, self-denial or, at worse, hypocrisy!
The Scout Oath, which members pledge to keep, begins:
“On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country …”
Furthermore, a Scout pledges “To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”
Since all major religions condemn the practice of homosexuality in the strongest terms, it is as impossible for young people who declare themselves to be homosexuals to keep the oath, as it is for atheists, who also are barred from becoming Boy Scouts.
It is true that some liberal denominations or sects within religions have attempted to explain away the prohibitions on homosexuality, fornication and even adultery. They fool no one, least of all the Creator who designed and made us.
So how did the BSA Executive Committee, which crafted this resolution, attempt to square this circle?
The answer is in the whereases, which are part of the proposed amendment:

WHEREAS, Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether homosexual or heterosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting;

Hello! Homosexuality is a choice. One is not born that way as some claim. If that were the case there would be no former homosexuals. There is no gay gene. Science has found no biological basis for homosexuality, though not for lack of trying. Homosexuality is a practice, not a gender.
How does a young boy decide that he is a homosexual? It is by engaging in this sexual conduct.
It is no secret that surveys taken on gay issues like marriage show that the younger the respondents, the more likely they are to embrace the idea. The surveys taken by the Scouts in the run-up to this vote were no different.
Why? Because, we sat idly by and allowed homosexuality to be mainstreamed, promoted and, in fact, encouraged in our schools along with all manner of sexual activity.
Do the adults who drafted this resolution seriously believe that a young boy who “comes out” and declares himself to be homosexual and is demanding to be admitted to the Boy Scouts just came to that conclusion out of the blue? Seriously, are they really that naive?
A closer examination of the “findings” of the study commissioned by the Executive Committee reveals that the major force behind the push to admit homosexuals is not from its membership or the chartering organizations but from its corporate donors. [continue reading at http://www.wnd.com/2013/04/boy-scouts-want-to-split-the-baby/]

WHAT GOES ON AT JOHN MACARTHUR’S “THE MASTER’S COLLEGE”

A followup report from Ralph Ovadal, pastor of Pilgrims Covenant Church, Monroe, Wisconsin, pcc@pccmonroe.com, about the youth events at The Master’s College is below.

Business as Usual at The Master’s College

April 26, 2013
Ezekiel 9:4: “And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city,
through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men
that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.”
Almost nineteen months ago, we sent out the article you will find below. The
subject of the article is several ministries under the leadership of Dr. John
MacArthur; one of those ministries is The Master’s College. In the text of the
article, you will find links to videos posted on YouTube and Facebook by TMC
and TMC students. Several more such links are included at the end of the
article. Just several of those links are no longer accessible; but, as they say,
there’s plenty more where that came from!
Lately, I was shown some samples of more recent videos posted by TMC
and also TMC students. From those, it is pretty clear it is “business as
usual” at The Master’s College. For the concerned, or skeptical, here are
links to the videos brought to my attention. These videos feature TMC
students and, in some cases, staff. They are apparently recorded on campus
and using campus facilities.
  • This lewd video features the TMC men’s soccer team doing the “Harlem
  • Shake” in the locker room. It begins with one young man acting like
  • an immature idiot, but at twenty-three seconds, the whole team joins
  • in for the disgusting finale. This is one of several “Harlem Shake” videos
  • posted by TMC students, including one shot in the TMC library.
  • TMC Volleyball Tootsie Roll Video”: This repulsive video was obviously
  • shot on the TMC campus. Let’s just say, gracious Christian womanhood
  • does not seem to be held in very high esteem by TMC staff and many
  • students.
  • Attack Lines” is an official TMC video featuring action scenes of the TMC
  • women’s volleyball team interspersed by their coach pathetically insisting
  • his goal and the goal of the team is to play the game “all for the glory of
  • God.” Watch the video. Is it to the glory of God for young women to dress
  • and act like this? But if you thought the volleyball outfits were well
  • beyond immodest, it gets worse. Here are a few pictures of the TMC
  • women’s volleyball team and their coach enjoying themselves on the
  • beach. These are a few, of many pictures, on the official TMC
  • Volleyball team Facebook page:http://tinyurl.com/tmcvb1
  • http://tinyurl.com/tmcvb7http://tinyurl.com/tmcvb6
  • http://tinyurl.com/tmcvb4http://tinyurl.com/tmcvb2
  • Stuff TMC People Say” was shot on campus and, complete with a
  • blasphemous comment about the Holy Spirit, won first prize in the
  • 2012 official TMC Spring Sing event (see article below). Apparently,
  • horsey women, effeminate-acting men, not to mention one
  • apparently pretending to be a homosexual, are rated great
  • entertainment by TMC staff and students. A 2013 Spring Sing sequel
  • to “Stuff TMC People Say” can be seen at this link.
  • Piano Man” stars Dr. Paul T. Plew and the tenors of The Master’s College
  • Chorale. Plew performs a remake of the popular Billy Joel song about a
  • piano man in a bar, but the remake is about young men who can’t “get
  • girls on their own.” Dr. Plew is director of The Master’s College Chorale,
  • also the chairperson of the music department and director of choral
  • activities at The Master’s College since 1979.
  • Where is the Love” is another funky, punky TMC Spring Sing video.
  • John MacArthur has a part in Life Together.” This video, a “lip-dub
  • [using Scripture] was produced by The Master’s College Chapel Media
  • department to celebrate the 2011-2012 school year.” I suppose
  • irreverent, childish worldliness sums this one up pretty good.
  • Narnia Announcements” is also an official TMC video in which “Lucy
  • Pevensie tells of her magical meeting with the Faun, Tumnus. Mr.
  • Tumnus tells of all the magical announcements for The Master’s College.”
The article below, together with all the links, provides a good overview of the goings-on at The Master’s College as well as Camp Regeneration, both under the leadership of Dr. John MacArthur, or as he calls himself in the rap video linked to in the article, “Johnny Mac.” Nothing has changed for the good with regard to TMC and the various TMC events, including the rock music used for “worship” at The Master’s College. Don’t you wish they would at least change the name of that college?
Official Internet postings of videos and pictures make it clear that it was also business as usual at the 2012 Regeneration Camp—women mud crawlers, rock and roll, severed pig’s head, etc. This year, that “High School Summer Camp hosted by John MacArthur and Grace Community Church for high school ministries nationwide” will be held in July.
Brethren, the Lord’s flock is being devoured by ravening wolves.

The Doctrine of Sanctification: The Old Guy Definition?Ezra 9:3: “And when I heard this thing, I . . . sat down astonied.”
I cannot say I enjoyed writing this article, but there are times when a minister feels the conviction that he has a certain duty to discharge. It is that conviction, I trust given by the Spirit of the Lord, which leads me to publish this article when I would rather not do so.
Now, I do not believe in biting and devouring or gnat straining, and I do believe in always thinking the best of Christian brethren. But I think a fair reading of what follows will make it abundantly clear the issue has to do with camels, not gnats. And there is a devouring going on, but it is not the writer of this simple report doing it. What is being devoured, as represented here, is objective truth, the spiritual well-being of a generation of evangelical young people, and the sanctification of our Lord’s blood-bought flock. That is my conclusion, and I believe it is well-grounded in the Scriptures. I am sure some readers of this article will come to the same conclusion; others, perhaps many others, to a different one. For all I know, the leaders of the ministry which is the focus of this simple report and others involved in it will be happy for a little extra publicity on their labors.

The things put forth here have nothing to do with trying to “get” anyone or “digging for dirt.” Everything documented, including each picture, was found proudly posted on the various web sites noted. All of the information documented is very current. And none of it is of a personal nature. Finally, we are all painfully aware and are all often reminded that none of us is perfect, far from it. But the content of this article ought to make it clear that a lack of “perfection” is not the issue.
About a year ago, Rev. Stephen Hamilton and I produced a “Heart of the Matter” special titled “They’re No Puritans! Profiles in New Calvinism”(http://tinyurl.com/nopuritans). In that program, we explained the New Calvinist movement. We also profiled some of the New Calvinist celebrity ministers, starting with the radical Mark Driscoll and closing at the other end of the spectrum with the very accomplished, congenial John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California. Dr. MacArthur is also president of both The Master’s College and The Master’s Seminary.
Recently, I was given a video of an interview with Dr. MacArthur (http://youtu.be/xYhmo5gabQU) which was done by Christianity.com and posted on their YouTube page August 18, 2011. Without going into all of the issues raised in that interview, I thought it included some good comments as well as, in my judgment, some inconsistent counsel and wrong conclusions. However, I was encouraged to hear Dr. MacArthur rip into unnamed New Calvinist ministers–“young guys”–for their worldly ways and also share the well-grounded fear he has concerning the fruit of their examples and ministries.
Here are some encouraging excerpted comments from Pastor MacArthur:
“The fear is that the power of the world’s attraction is going to suck these guys, and every generation after them, more and more into the culture, and we’re going to see a reversal of the Reformed revival. . . . It is wonderful [the Reformed revival], but it is being co-opted and commandeered by a bunch of these young guys who, because they affirm the doctrine of substitution, get a free pass on everything else. I don’t even think they have a biblical view of sanctification. . . . My fear is that the further this thing goes in trying to accommodate the culture, the less it’s going to be able to hang on to that core doctrine. . . . I don’t know that the heart of this Reformed theology . . . can really survive the pull of the culture which is attracting these young guys and which these young guys are using to attract people.”
After watching that interview with Pastor MacArthur, I thought perhaps there was a chance he was abandoning some of his own New Calvinist ways and hopefully NC associates. I was soon disabused of that notion. Let me tell you how. Currently, a faithful Christian worker from our church has been doing research for a “Heart of the Matter” sequel on New Calvinism. In the course of her research, she was led back to some of the web sites of ministries under the leadership of Pastor John MacArthur and affiliated with his Grace Community Church (GCC).
In our first New Calvinist program, we briefly reported on the 2010 Camp Regeneration, described this way on the event’s web site: “Regeneration is a summer camp hosted by Grace Community Church for churches throughout the nation each July for a week of passionate expository preaching, worship and exciting activities.”

“Worship” at Camp Regeneration, July, 2011.

Photo from the camp’s official Flickr page.

Last year, this event, at which GCC Pastor MacArthur preaches, featured a performance by the ear-ringed “holy hip-hop” artist Lecrae as well as plenty of far-from-modest dress. These things were mentioned on our first HOM New Calvinist program. We had heard from a then-member of Dr. MacArthur’s church of some other disturbing activities which take place at Camp Regeneration or, as it is also called, Regeneration Camp. But not having any hard evidence of those things, such as pictures, I did not think it would be right or honorable to mention that information on the HOM program or anywhere else.
Well, it turns out that Christian sister most certainly was accurate in her description of the official goings-on at the GCC Regeneration Camp for high-school-aged young people. This year’s Camp Regeneration was held July 25-29, 2011. That would be during the month prior to the posting of the MacArthur interview I mentioned–the interview in which he took to task those “young guys” who he does not “even think . . . have a biblical view of sanctification”–yes, those Reformed ministers who are “young guys” who are using “the culture . . . to attract people” and so putting the next generation at such risk of being sucked “into the culture.”

Camp Regeneration, July, 2011. Photo from the camp’s official Flickr page.
With an apology for subjecting all of you to such crudities, I am including with this article a few pictures taken at this year’s Regeneration Camp and posted at the official Regeneration Camp Flickr page. I should mention before going any further: from other pictures at that page, it appears that there is a balance of young men and women at the Regeneration Camp, even though these particular pictures are mostly of young women. What I mean is, yes, these young women were dressed this way and acting this way in the presence of men.
Of course, there is no way of knowing how much longer any of the pictures or video links we are including in this article will be available. You will notice we have blurred out the faces of the young women who are the most immodestly dressed and at the same time very identifiable in a particular picture. They are young and obviously being very poorly served by John MacArthur and those working under him in leadership. We should pray the Lord will bring those same young ladies to the knowledge and conviction that their dress and behavior is entirely unbecoming a Christian woman professing godliness. Various Scriptures come to mind in that regard, such as 1 Timothy 2:9: “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety.”

Camp Regeneration, July, 2011. Photo from the camp’s official Flickr page.

In fact, many Scriptures come to mind, as one views all of the photos and videos included in this report. I do pray many of you will take the time to view them all as the topic of this article has very far-reaching implications and consequences for the whole ransomed church of Christ. We cannot help also thinking then of Philippians 1:27“Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ,” or certainly Colossians 1:10: “that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.” Romans 12:2 comes to mind: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” And what of Matthew 5:14: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid”? Then there is also 1 Peter 2:9: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” No doubt many readers will also think of 1 John 2:15: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

An article such as this one inevitably evokes “good words and fair speeches” in defense of the dress, music, and activities portrayed. But the reader would do very well to reverently consider such passages from the Word of God as those just mentioned–and many others could be noted as well–if he or she would make a right judgment.
During that research I mentioned, it was noticed that The Master’s College (TMC), with John MacArthur at the helm as president, this past December sponsored a big hip-hop/rap concert featuring such performers as Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii, and Sho Baraka. Those wanting a sample of the “Christian music” sponsored by TMC can find it by clicking on one or more of the links provided at the conclusion of this article. Each of those promo videos, with one exception, is well under two minutes in length. The other videos linked to in this article are mostly under three minutes with just several going a minute or two longer. I again encourage those who are concerned about the issue at hand and wanting to make a right judgment to make the effort to take advantage of the links provided.

One way to “worship” at The Master’s College.

Now, that TMC-sponsored concert just mentioned was no aberration. With the apparent blessings of Pastor MacArthur and the school’s administration, it would seem that a rap/rock culture–in truth, a most worldly culture in many ways–is very much alive and well among the students of The Master’s College.
And that culture is predictably producing bad fruit and developing worldly character, as seems obvious even from the videos provided with this report. Recently, I was shown some comments about me and that program on New Calvinism which aired in October of last year. The sneering remarks were on the public Facebook page of a Master’s College student who was one of the performers in a rap video produced by TMC students. The young lad along with a couple of friends make up a rap-rock-pop group named Triple Fist Kiss (3FK). This group produces music videos in conjunction with The Master’s College. That is to say, such videos are joint productions of 3FK and TMC. For instance, this Master’s College posting (http://youtu.be/EEeVS_pTM60) is a 3FK-TMC music video (in this case, effeminate pop rather than rock or rap) promoting a TMC event called Fall Thing during which TMC girls are urged to ask young men to one of TMC’s extravaganzas. The Master’s College web page informs us that the Fall Thing has “featured themes like ‘The Roaring 20’s’ or ‘Celebrity Look Alikes’. Entertainment has included hot-air balloon rides, magicians, murder-mystery theater, and much more.”
For those interested in seeing the ghetto-type rap skills of the versatile 3FK on full display, here are a couple of other links. The first is the infamous “Johnny Mac” video (http://tinyurl.com/johnnyrap) complete with an appearance of John MacArthur, as spoken of in that first HOM program on New Calvinism. This second 3FK “Christian” rap video was not done in conjunction with The Master’s College but was produced by students from The Master’s College, and the singers/rappers are TMC students. Uploaded June 6, 2011, this production, with its shocking scenes, is titled “Empire State of Chorale” (http://youtu.be/SYXow3c36WA): “Triple Fist Kiss . . . introduce The Master’s College Chorale to The Big Apple.” The Master’s College Chorale is one of TMC’s choirs.
The Master’s College Chorale members, and in some cases even TMC staff, are featured in a number of such music videos which are, plainly put, worldly and even ungodly. Such is also the case with “Tik Tok Chorale,” uploaded March 10, 2011 (http://youtu.be/JTnoVbtUS2o). This rock/rap video was filmed on locations across the western United States during a tour by The Master’s College Chorale.
Another video starring Master’s College students–this one more of the country music genre–is titled “Man, I Feel Like an Alto,” uploaded June 8, 2011 (http://youtu.be/J3lsGngNXqc). This production includes ungodly dancing scenes in a graveyard. I have been told that the “songs” in the two videos just mentioned are actually reworded versions of very ungodly popular songs. The Master’s College student performers in those and other videos seem quite familiar with the music and proficient in the moves of the secular music world. Other TMC students and staff appearing in various videos seem comfortable with their parts.
This next link, “Baby – Majesty” (http://youtu.be/HJgv7uoRgGs), will take you to a music video created for The Master’s College Spring Sing 2011 Show. This official entry was created by The Master’s College singing ensemble Majesty. According to The Master’s College web site, Majesty is “designed to minister in churches by leading congregations in biblical worship,” and “They travel approximately three weekends per month and tour for four weeks during the summer representing The Master’s College at churches, schools, and other venues across the United States and the world.” Judging from the video Majesty created for the students and staff of TMC, the singing ensemble is quite skilled at aping the music and mannerisms of pop music artists as well.

But for just a moment, relative to the fruit being produced by the worldly culture of The Master’s College, let’s go back to those insightful comments about yours truly and that first HOM program on New Calvinism. Luke 6:45: “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” It would seem that some young people in the 3FK/TMC circle are upset with this minister and that HOM program on New Calvinism. Here are a few excerpted comments from the page open to the public:
This is crazy
ahahah….sorry you’re going to hell boys.
That made me sick.
dude so crazy… totally made me laugh and mad at the same time!!!
dumbbbb
ROFL. this guy is an idiot.
Hilarious. He’s not a fan of Piper either.
OMGOSH. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE.
Those comments from young people feeding on rap and rock music are typical and are a manifestation of the “Christian” rap/rock culture. We heard the same arrogant sarcasm and ungodly disrespect from young New Evangelical CCM fans while we were conducting open-air ministry in front of Franklin Graham’s Rock the River concert in Davenport, Iowa and the Cornerstone rock festival put on by the “Jesus People USA” at Bushnell, Illinois. Proverbs 30:13-14: “There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives . . .”
I have made the observation and already provided ample evidence to substantiate the claim that a worldly, rap/rock culture is very much alive and well at The Master’s College. At the end of this article, you will find more such documentation in the form of additional links to video productions with brief explanations.
Now, before we bring this article down the home stretch to the finish, perhaps the reader might be interested in this excerpt from The Master’s College doctrinal statement:
“We teach that separation from sin is clearly called for throughout the Old and New Testaments, and that the Scriptures clearly indicate that in the last days apostasy and worldliness shall increase (2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1; 2 Timothy 3:1-5). We teach that out of deep gratitude for the undeserved grace of God granted to us and because our glorious God is so worthy of our total consecration, all the saved should live in such a manner as to demonstrate our adoring love to God and so as not to bring reproach upon our Lord and Savior. We also teach that separation from any association with religious apostasy, and worldly and sinful practices is commanded of us by God (Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 5:9-13; 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1; 1 John 2:15-17; 2 John 9-11).”

With that backdrop, allow me to briefly introduce you to the Week of Welcome (WOW) which The Master’s College throws for new studentsa worldly bash including, among other activities, time at the beach and also pool parties, some on the Lord’s Day, no less.
WOW 2011 ran from Thursday, August 18–Friday, August 26. The Master’s College WOW Guide description of the week states, “. . . over 130 upperclassmen have volunteered to hang out with you this week, to build relationships and guide you through every event. They are praying for you already and have one goal in mind: to make your transition to The Master’s College family successful. Rest now–we are in for a dynamic week.”

A “WOW 2011 Sunday Recap” video (http://tinyurl.com/sundayrecap) posted on a TMC Facebook page is introduced with this: “On the Sunday of WOW we all travel to Grace Community Church of Sun Valley where our President Dr. MacArthur is Pastor-Teacher and we enjoy the hospitality of families from the church at pool parties in the afternoon.”
Included with this article, you will find a few pictures taken during The Master’s College 2011 WOW week. As they say, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. And so, the reader can look at those pictures–in fact, all the pictures and videos included with this article–and judge whether the behavior and dress is appropriate for young Christian men and women supposedly committed to “separation from . . . worldly . . . practices” and aspiring to maturity and godliness.

The conclusion should be obvious to any Christian with discernment and a knowledge of the Word of God. What then should we think of a shepherd and elders who would lead the Lord’s flock–in fact, the younger members of that flock–into such Christ-dishonoring, dangerous, worldly corruption? And what will be the fruit of it all when those being discipled in such a way fill the pulpits and pews of Reformed, evangelical churches around the nation? The Word of God provides the clear answers to both of those questions.

Now, if all of this has left you, the reader, feeling not only heartsick and weary but also “astonied,” I can relate. Of course, we all agree that when “young guys” who are ministers preside over, take part in, and are responsible for the sort of things spoken of and pictured in this article, those things are worldly and opposed to sanctification. But I guess what some of us (including yours truly, the “dumbbbb” “idiot”) are not getting is that those same activities and music are apparently sanctified by the touch of certain “old guy” ministers such as John MacArthur.

U.S. ARMY BLOCKS SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION WEBSITE FOR “HOSTILE CONTENT” (HATE GROUP)

The New American has reported that a U.S. Army officer has not been able to access the Southern Baptist Convention website. See: http://thenewamerican.com/culture/faith-and-morals/item/15212-u-s-army-bases-block-access-to-southern-baptist-website.

The United States Army has blocked the website of the Southern Baptist Convention from government computers, saying the Christian site contains “hostile content.”
An Army officer assigned to a U.S. base said he tried to access SBC.net from his government computer, but instead, he got a message that said the site was being blocked by “Team CONUS”: Team CONUS protects the computer network of the Department of Defense.

“So the Southern Baptist Convention is now considered hostile to the U.S. Army…it just corroborates the recent string of events highlighted by AFA,” the officer wrote in an email to American Family Association.
This is just another example of the Christian faith coming under attack in the military. Earlier this month, an Army email listed prominent Christian ministries like the Family Research Council and American Family Association as “domestic hate groups.”

ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER’S WIFE CO-OWNS ABORTION CLINIC BUILDING RUN BY INDICTED ABORTIONIST

Jill Stanek of Life Site News reported at http://www.lifesitenews.com/blog/breaking-eric-holders-wife-co-owns-abortion-clinic-building-run-by-indicted/, that Attorney General Eric Holder’s wife Sharon Malone Holder (both pictured here), the same Eric Holder who wants to deport the Romeike German homeschooling family, co-owns with her sister an Atlanta area abortion clinic building.

The building is located at 6210 Old National Highway, College Park, Georgia. The business itself is called Old National GYNhttp://www.oldnationalgyn.com/

This is the deed as recorded:

and here from Human Events’ article: http://www.humanevents.com/2012/10/31/eric-holders-family-papers-over-his-ties-to-abortion-doctor/, which has a link to the recorded deed showing the two as trustees:
“Just cleared by an internal report in the “Fast and Furious” gunrunning debacle, Eric Holder, the nation’s top lawman now faces allegations that his connection to Dr. Tyrone Cecil Malloy is a conflict of interest that helps explain Holder’s failure to prosecute abortion providers who run afoul of federal law. Documents obtained by Watchdog show that Holder’s wife and sister-in-law co-own, through a family trust, the building where Malloy operated. A Georgia grand jury indicted Malloy on Medicaid fraud charges in 2011. A state medical board twice reprimanded the doctor. A statement from the Georgia Department of Law shows the building was home to Old National Gynecology, Malloy’s medical practice devoted to the performance of abortions. In December 2011, the statement says, a DeKalb County Grand Jury indicted Malloy, Old National’s owner and operator, and his former office manager CathyAnn Edwards Warner on two counts of Medicaid fraud. The indictment alleged Malloy and Edwards accepted nearly $390,000 in federal medical assistance payments for medical office visits associated with the performance of elective abortions and for ultrasound services that were never performed.”

CBS GIVES VOICE TO (AND CELEBRATES) ATHEISTS, HERETICS & APOSTATES

CBS Television ran a 30 minute broadcast titled “Religion and Spirituality in a Changing Society”
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50144670n, with comments from Diana Butler Bass,

Here is a video of Bass being interviewed about her book “Christianity After Religion”,

RUTH HALEY BARTON TO SPEAK AT ASSEMBLY OF GOD “BELIEVE” CONFERENCE AUGUST 2013

As reported by this blog previously, Barton will bring her contemplative ideas to the Assembly of God conference, “Believe”. Now, Lighthouse Trails Research expands http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/newsletters/2013/newsletters20130415.htm.
The full text is here:

SPECIAL REPORT: Assemblies of God “Believe” Conference Makes Bold Move –
Brings in Contemplative Key Player Ruth Haley Barton
This August, in Orlando, Florida, the Assemblies of God USA will be presenting their
General Council Conference, which takes place every two years. The title of this year’s
event is ”BELIEVE.” Scheduled to speak to “women in ministry” on one of the nights is
Ruth Haley Barton. This is a bold move that the Assemblies of God is making because
Barton is a major player in bringing contemplative mystical (i.e., mantra-based) prayer
into the evangelical church.
The mission statement for the conference is “Believe we are on the cusp of an unparalleled
Spiritual awakening.”1 On the conference website, it states: GENERAL COUNCIL is the
Assemblies of God’s largest gathering. It takes place every two years bringing church
leaders together from all around the world.2
It also says that the event will inspire encounters with God, shape the Assemblies of God
movement, and enhance [AOG leaders] ”skills and be inspired to advance the kingdom of God.”
While the Assemblies of God denomination has been going in the contemplative direction for
some time, especially within the AOG theological seminary, to bring a major contemplative
player in as a speaker to the movement’s main leadership conference illustrates how much
AOG has absorbed contemplative spirituality over the last few years especially.
As a little background, in 2005, Lighthouse Trails addressed the issue of contemplative coming
into AOG when we discussed Professor Earl Creps, director of the Doctor of Ministry at the
Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. Creps is probably one of the earliest figures within
the AOG movement to bring contemplative into AOG. In one document titled “Leading Others
and Myself,” Creps lists a number of New Spirituality, emerging church and contemplative
proponents as people he turns to.3 A 2006 LT article, “Assemblies of God: Committed to
Spiritual Formation, Contemplative and Emerging,” stated: If Assemblies of God Theological
Seminary is any indication, then AOG is heading straight towards contemplative spirituality
and the emerging church. Earl Creps . . . is a heavy proponent of both contemplative and
emerging. In his course syllabi over the last five years, Creps has classes with titles such as
“Leading the Emerging Church” and “Models of Ministry in the Emerging Church.” Syllabus
reading materials include those from Henri Nouwen, Brian McLaren, Ken Blanchard, Dan Kimball,
. . . and Leonard Sweet. A visit to Creps’ “Spiritual Adventures” blog gives a hearty helping of
emergent discussion. In one blog, Creps tries to show how there might be a union between
Pentecostalism and the emerging church [i.e. contemplative], saying the relationship is “gaining
some traction.”
As in most cases now, contemplative starts coming into a denomination through seminaries,
colleges, and universities, and in time reveals itself in the main body of that movement. That
is now what is happening with AOG bringing in Ruth Haley Barton to the General Council
event this year where AOG leaders from around the world will be participating.
For those who have followed Lighthouse Trails, you will know that Barton was trained at the
Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington, DC where she, according to her own
words, was “under the guidance of Tilden Edwards, Rosemary Dougherty and Gerald May.”
On Ruth Haley Barton’s Transforming Center website, she enthusiastically acknowledges
being trained there, but the site gives a vague and almost oxymoronic disclaimer saying:
“While she values allthat she has gained from the teachers and institutions in which she has
studied, this does not imply endorsement of everything taught in these environments.”4
(emphasis added)
We could talk about the beliefs of Tilden Edwards, Rosemary Dougherty, and Gerald May,
but we have in other articles that can be looked up on our research site and read. Basically,
these teachers are contemplative mystics who adhere to panentheism and universalism. It
was Edwards who said that, “This mystical stream [contemplative prayer] is the Western
bridge to Far Eastern spirituality (Spiritual Friend, p. 18). In other words, contemplative
spirituality draws all religions together in unity under the common denominator of mysticism.
Who is Ruth Haley Barton?
After Barton finished her training at the Shalem Institute, she became the Associate Director
of Spiritual Formation at Willow Creek Community Church and co-authored (with John
Ortberg) a Spiritual Formation curriculum for Willow Creek. In time, Ortberg moved on to
become pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian in California, and Barton left to found the
Transforming Center, which claims to train thousands of pastors and leaders in the
contemplative way. She has written a number of books – virtually all having the core message
that you gain intimacy with God through the silence (that is her predominant message). Some
of these books are: Invitation to Solitude and Silence (foreword by Dallas Willard), Sacred
Rhythms, Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership, and one of her more recent ones
Pursuing God’s Will Together: A Discernment Practice for Leadership Groups.
So what is it exactly that Barton teaches? In a Christianity Today article titled “Drawing Closer
to God,” Barton describes the practice of contemplative prayer, saying, “Ask for a simple prayer
to express your willingness to meet God in the silence . . . a simple statement . . . such as ‘Here
I am. . . . ’ Help yourself return to your original intent by repeating the prayer that you have
chosen.”
In Barton’s popular book, Invitation to Solitude and Silence, she goes into more depth: Identify
your sacred space and time. Explore all the possibilities for a time and physical space in which
you can be alone on a regular basis (p. 40) Begin with a modest goal, especially if silence is a new
practice for you. Ten, fifteen or twenty minutes of time spent in actual silence is realistic,
depending on such factors as your personality, pace of life, reliance on words and activity (p. 41).
Settle into a comfortable yet alert physical position (p. 41). Ask God to give you a simple prayer
that expresses your openness and desire for God. Choose a prayer phrase that expresses your
desire or need for God these days in the simplest terms possible. It is best if the prayer is not more
than six to eight syllables so that it can be prayed very naturally in the rhythm of your breathing.
Pray this prayer several times as an entry into silence and also as a way of dealing with distractions.
Distractions are inevitable, so when they come, simply let them go by like clouds floating across
the sky. Help yourself return to the prayerful intent by repeating the prayer you have chosen.
Use your prayer phrase for as long as it captures what is most true about your heart’s desire for
God, and link it with a body posture that also helps you express your spiritual desire (pp. 41-42).
In regard to Barton’s disclaimer on her website, she can say that she does not endorse everything
she was taught at Shalem Institute, but the fact of the matter is what she just described above is
the essence of what Shalem believes and teaches. Everything they teach stems from this mystical
prayer. Perhaps she is implying that she does not adhere to their panentheistic (God in all) and
universalist (all are saved) views, but that would be ironic because these are the things that are
produced by practicing contemplative prayer. Ray Yungen calls them the “fruit” of contemplative
prayer. In A Time of Departing, Yungen discusses Shalem and its role in Barton’s spiritual life. He
includes a quote found on Shalem’s website to show the underlying roots of Shalem’s ultimate goal:
In Christianity and other traditions that understand God to be present everywhere, contemplation
includes a reverence for the Divine Mystery, “finding God in all things,” [panentheism] or “being
open to God’s presence, however it may appear. (5)

Yungen shares his concerns about Ruth Haley Barton: “[Barton] echoes [goddess worshipper]
Sue Monk Kidd in many ways, including the general malaise or condition of the human soul.
Barton recounts: A few years ago, I began to recognize an inner chaos in my soul . . . No
matter how much I prayed, read the Bible, and listened to good teaching, I could not calm
the internal roar created by questions with no answers. (“Beyond Words“)
“The following scenario Barton relates could be the wave of the future for the evangelical
church if this movement continues to unfold in the manner it already has: I sought out a
spiritual director, someone well versed in the ways of the soul . . . eventually this wise woman
said to me, . . . “What you need is stillness and silence so that the sediment can settle and
the water can become clear.” . . . I decided to accept this invitation to move beyond my
addiction to words (“Beyond Words”)
“By ‘addiction to words’ [Barton] means normal ways of praying. She still uses words, but only
three of them, ‘Here I am.’ This is nothing more than the Cloud of Unknowing or [Henri Nouwen’s]
prayer of the heart. Like Richard Foster, Barton argues that God cannot be reached adequately,
if at all, without the silence. In referring to I Kings 19 when Elijah was hiding in a cave, Barton
encourages: God loves us enough to wait for us to come openly to Him. Elijah’s experience
shows that God doesn’t scream to get our attention. Instead, we learn that our willingness to
listen in silence opens up a quiet space in which we can hear His voice, a voice that longs to
speak and offer us guidance for our next step. (“Beyond Words”)
“What Barton fails to mention here is that Elijah was a valiant defender of the belief in the one,
unique God – Yahweh (as seen in his encounter with the 450 prophets of Baal), and he never
went into an altered state of silence in his personal encounter with God.” (A Time of Departing
2nd. ed., pp. 172-173)
Those reading this who are skeptical about what we are saying may be asking, “What’s so
wrong about repeating a word or phrase and going into an altered state of silence?” To this
we answer, this state of silence is the same state that occultists and Eastern meditation
practitioners enter when practicing transcendental meditation (TM). We can prove this by the
words of one of the men who trained Ruth Haley Barton – Gerald May (from Shalem Institute).
May wrote the foreword to a book titled Zen for Christians. In that book, he says the following:
I began to explore Eastern religions . . . I was taking my spiritual business elsewhere. Or
so I thought. What surprised me, eventually, was that my foray into Buddhism led me in a kind
of circle, back to my Christian roots. Over time, Buddhist practices [meditation] somehow
revealed to me the rich resources of Christian contemplative tradition that had been there
all along . . . I was not alone in that experience. . . [Those on the contemplative road] in their
searching, many turned toward the East and experienced exactly what I had – an
eventual discovery of deep nourishment [Eastern enlightenment] within their own original
traditions. The phenomenon happened so frequently that we gave it a name: “pilgrimage
home.” May was correct in stating that so-called “Christian” contemplative prayer is the
same as Buddhist meditation. As one adherent admitted, “The meditation of advanced
occultists is identical with the prayer of advanced mystics” (Kirby, Mission of Mysticism, p. 7).
Who are the “advanced mystics”? There are plenty of them, names you probably know:
Henri Nouwen, Richard Foster, Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, and to that list we add Ruth
Haley Barton. Consider this: On Barton’s website, she sells books by Catholic priest and
contemplative activist Richard Rohr. In addition, she quotes him (in a prominent spot)
in her recent book Pursuing God’s Will Together from his book, Everything Belongs.
Typical of other contemplatives, such as Thomas Merton, Rohr believes that everything is
connected together and that all is divine (thus, everybody belongs to the kingdom of God).
In his 2011 book, Falling Upward, Rohr implies that we all are ”immaculate conception[s]”
(p. ix). If these things are true, then there was no need for Jesus Christ to die on the Cross
for the sins of mankind. We would not need a Savior because we would already be
divine ourselves. In truth, contemplative spirituality is the antithesis of the Gospel. That is why
there are countless mystics who claim to know God (or Jesus) but will have nothing to do with
the Cross.
In a YouTube teaching video “Sacred Rhythms Group Bible Study” by Barton, she tells viewers,
“You have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain [if you follow her instructions],”

but we say you have everything to lose and nothing to gain if you go down the contemplative
path. Sadly, instead of being on the “cusp of an unparalleled Spiritual Awakening,” it appears
that the Assemblies of God is going to be losing “a whole lot” in the days to come as
they further open themselves to the contemplative “silence” and the spiritual deception that
accompanies it. Our warning here is to be taken seriously. William Shannon, Thomas
Merton’s biographer, validated our concern when he made the following observation:
If one wants to understand Merton’s going to the East it is important to understand that
it was his rootedness in his own faith tradition [Catholicism] that gave him the spiritual
equipment [contemplative prayer] he needed to grasp the way of wisdom that is proper
to the East. (Silent Lamp, p. 281)

This is what Tilden Edwards meant by the bridge to Far Eastern spirituality. Merton didn’t
become a Buddhist; rather he grasped the way that “is proper to the East.” That is how Merton,
as a Catholic monk, could say, “I intend to become as good a Buddhist as I can.”* In other words,
while you don’t become a Buddhist, you absorb the Buddhist view into your Christianity. This is
the underlying herald cry of the contemplative prayer movement, and it is something that can
never be reconciled with the message of the Cross.
The ironic thing is that the Assemblies of God has traditionally held to the biblical view of the end
times whereas contemplative spirituality lines up with a universal world religion, which will
encompass all humanity and unite under the man of sin. There has never been anything on the
scene before that would allow a universal religion that appeals to people on a broad scale. But
first people have to hook up to the common factor and binding agent of this one-world religion,
and that is contemplative prayer!

7:10, 1969).

UPDATE: CHALLENGE TO MELISSA HARRIS-PERRY OF MSNBC WHO SAYS YOUR CHILDREN BELONG TO THE COLLECTIVIST STATE

Pastor Ralph Ovadal of Pilgrims Covenant Church, Monroe, Wisconsin, www.pccmonroe.org, has commented on the remarks of Melissa Harris-Perry of MSNBC. He recommends that all Christians should remove their children from the Godless government school system and that the Bible declares that it is the parents’ responsibility to educate the children. Listen to his excellent 26 minute sermon here: http://www.sermonaudio.com/playpopup.asp?SID=41213917230, or see srmonaudio.com at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?sermonID=41213917230 for download.
What other pastors have dared to speak out on this issue? We will attempt to find them, but don’t hold your breath!
Meanwhile, there has been outrage from secular media about this issue, comparing Harris-Perry’s remarks to those of Hitler:

Here again is Harris-Perry urging a collectivist mindest when it comes to education of our children. Go to 8 minute mark for the tirade:

and also:

Harris-Perry has a history of exploding at people who don’t agree with her thoughts and ideas, such as in this video. Just hold your ground and don’t cower or knuckle under to her demagoguery.

Roma Downey, the Roman Catholic co-creator (with her husband) of the History Channel’s popular “The Bible” miniseries, says Pope Francis is “a new pope of hope” (“Roma Downey,” Christian Post, April 4, 2013). Downey, famous for her role as “the angel Monica” in the new-agey TV series “Touched by an Angel,” plays the part of Mary in “The Bible” miniseries. She says the example of Pope Francis will cause “the seeds of hope to flourish in people’s hearts and people’s lives.” In an earlier interview, Downey said, “I have prayed to Mary and loved her my whole life” (“The Bible: An Epic Mini-Series,” Catholiclane.com, Feb. 28, 2013). Arthur R. Thompson, CEO of the John Birch Society has serious concerns about the expansion of Russian production and export of military weapons to various countries in BRICS, the new Communist Bloc, in this YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaWnuGPsUh8.

Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has authored and sent a letter to Chuck Hagel, Secretary of Defense, and signed by 10 lawmakers demanding to know the reasons: http://delauro.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1211:bipartisan-group-urges-hagel-not-to-purchase-from-rosoboronexport&catid=2:2012-press-releases&Itemid=21.
The above reads in part, followed by the letter to Hagel:
“Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) led a bipartisan group of members today urging Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel not to purchase additional helicopters from the state-owned Russian arms dealer Rosoboronexport. That company has continued to transfer weapons to the Assad regime, enabling mass atrocities. The group sent the letter amid reports that the Department of Defense is considering purchasing 20 helicopters for the Afghan National Security Forces from the firm.

Last year DeLauro authored an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act prohibiting the use of funds to enter into any contracts or agreements with Rosoboronexport. That provision is now law. However, there is an exemption if the Secretary of Defense deems it to be in the interest of national security. The members asked Secretary Hagel to explain his justification, writing “What is the national security justification of continuing business with Rosoboronexport? Relatedly, last year, DoD notified Congress of plans to purchase 33 Mi-17s from Rosoboronexport for the Afghan National Security Forces. What is the national security justification for the additional 20 helicopters this year?”
Here is the full text of the letter:
The Honorable Chuck Hagel
Secretary of Defense
1000 Defense Pentagon
Washington, DC 20301-1000
Dear Secretary Hagel,
We write to oppose any continuation of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) business relationship with Rosoboronexport, Russia’s primary arms exporter and an enabler of the ongoing mass atrocities in Syria.  In January, Section 1277 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13 NDAA; P.L. 112-239), which expressly prohibits the use of funds to enter into any contracts or agreements with Rosoboronexport, was enacted into law. Further, during consideration of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2013, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved an amendment prohibiting further contracts with Rosoboronexport by a vote of 407-5. We urge you to uphold this law and clear expression of Congressional intent by ensuring that any further DoD procurement of helicopters for the Afghan National Security Forces is not conducted through Rosoboronexport.
Russia continues to transfer weapons through Rosoboronexport to the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Since the Syrian uprising began, Russia has continued to serve as the Assad regime’s chief supplier of weapons, enabling the mass murder of Syrian citizens at the hands of their own government.  According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, approximately 70,000 Syrians have been killed since the Syrian conflict began nearly two years ago. Despite the ongoing atrocities, Russia’s special envoy to the Middle East, Mikhail Bogdanov, announced on February 13 that Russia would continue to supply weapons to Assad’s regime. In addition, Rosoboronexport Director Anatoly Isaikin told reporters that “in the absence of sanctions, we are continuing to fulfill our contract obligations.” As you know, it is Russia’s veto power as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council that has blocked the imposition of sanctions on the Syrian regime to this point.
Last summer, DoD notified Congress of plans to exercise an option in an existing contract to purchase additional Mi-17s from Rosoboronexport – plans that Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle and human rights groups opposed.   Despite these clear objections, DOD proceeded, and in response Congress enacted Section 1277 of the FY13 NDAA.
Despite this new law, we learned that the Army intends to enter into a new contract with Rosoboronexport in the coming weeks to procure 20 additional helicopters for the Afghan National Security Forces. This plan runs in direct contravention to both the spirit of the FY13 NDAA and the clear legislative intent of Congress – to ban further business dealings with Rosoboronexport. In our view, any attempt by DoD to utilize prior-year funds would constitute a direct subversion of existing law.
The United States Government has imposed punishing sanctions on Syria and invested precious diplomatic resources to end the conflict there.  The NDAA provision is intended to bolster U.S. policy and ensure that U.S. contracts with Syria’s primary arms dealer do not undermine it.  In order to make certain that U.S. policy on Syria is clear, consistent, and effective, we strongly urge you to certify that no new contracts are concluded or options acted upon between DoD and Rosoboronexport.  Moreover, we urge you to hold an open competition for any further purchases of helicopters for the Afghan National Security Forces.
Accordingly, we request that your Department prepare a detailed briefing focusing on the following questions and present it to us before the Army takes any action on the pending contract.
What steps has DoD taken to ensure compliance with Section 1277 of the FY13 NDAA and to consider alternative suppliers of helicopters for the Afghan National Security Forces.
Section 1277 requires DoD, in order to exercise its waiver authority, to certify to Congress that conducting further business with Rosoboronexport is “in the national security interests of the United States.” What is the national security justification of continuing business with Rosoboronexport? Relatedly, last year, DoD notified Congress of plans to purchase 33 Mi-17s from Rosoboronexport for the Afghan National Security Forces. What is the national security justification for the additional 20 helicopters this year?
The Government Accountability Office and the Defense Contract Audit Agency are undertaking a Congressionally mandated examination of the Army’s existing contract with Rosoboronexport. How is DoD planning to address and incorporate the review’s findings into its practices and protocols?

What steps is DoD taking to ensure that it does not support – financially or otherwise – enablers of mass atrocities?
Thank you for your serious attention to this request.  We appreciate your prompt response.
 Sincerely,
 ROSA L. DeLAURO

UPDATE TO APRIL 7, 2013 POST: ARMY OFFICER SENDS 14 PAGE EMAIL TO SUBORDINATES ABOUT ANTI-GAY CHRISTIAN GROUPS

APRIL 12, 2013 UPDATE:

U.S. MILITARY IS BRIEFED THAT CHRISTIANITY IS NUMBER ONE THREAT

Soldiers in the U.S. military have been told in a training briefing, http://www.adfmedia.org/files/ExtremismPresentation.pdf, (page 24), that evangelical Christians are the No. 1 extremist threat to America – ahead of groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, KKK, Nation of Islam, al-Qaida, Hamas and others. See: http://www.wnd.com/2013/04/military-warned-evangelicals-no-1-threat/.

UPDATE OF APRIL 12, 2013 from American Family Association:
An Army officer has sent an email to subordinates labeling conservative Christian organizations as “domestic hate groups” and stating their values don’t align with “Army values.”
AFA has obtained the 14-page email sent out by Lt. Col. Jack Rich telling other officers and soldiers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, that, specifically, the American Family Association and the Family Research Council are “domestic hate groups” because they oppose homosexuality. Rich said: “When we see behaviors that are inconsistent with Army Values, don’t just walk by – do the right thing and address the concern before it becomes a problem.”

Rich took inflammatory and incendiary language directly from the website of the anti-Christian Southern Poverty Law Center, then purposely and specifically chose AFA and FRC as examples of “domestic hate groups.”
There are thousands and thousands of people enlisted in the United States Army who are themselves Christian and would resent the fact that this one lieutenant colonel is purporting to speak for the whole Army by saying AFA and FRC don’t represent “Army values.”

HOLMAN PUBLISHERS INSERTS ARTICLE BY CONTEMPLATIVE PROPONENT INTO KING JAMES BIBLES

NOTICE: Lighthouse Trails Research has released important warnings to Christians about Holman Publishers, Calvin Miller and Marcus Borg:
Lighthouse Trails learned that Holman Bible Publishers (the oldest Bible publisher in America) has inserted an article by a strong contemplative proponent into several of their King James Version Bibles (some of which Lighthouse Trails WAS carrying) including: the Ultra Thin Reference Bible, the Pocket-Sized Bible Classic, the Large Print Ultra Thin Bible, and the Personal Reference Bible. The article in the Bibles is titled, “Why You Should Read the King James Bible,” written by the late Calvin Miller (died 2012). Calvin Miller is an advocate for contemplative/centering prayer.
The two warnings are as follows, in their entirety:

This is a major issue, and let us tell you 4 reasons why we believe Holman should not have done this:

Calvin Miller

1. Calvin Miller is an advocate for contemplative/centering prayer. Ray Yungen discusses Miller in A Time of Departing:

In Into the Depths of God, [Calvin] Miller encourages readers to engage in centering prayer and explains it as a union between man and God:
“Centering is the merger of two ‘selves’—ours and his [God’s]. Centering is union with Christ. It is not a union that eradicates either self but one that heightens both” (p. 107).
Into the Depths of God is an exhortation in contemplative spirituality and is brimming with quotes by Thomas Merton and other contemplatives. Miller speaks of the “wonderful relationship between ecstasy [mystical state] and transcendence [God],” and says that “Ecstasy is meant to increase our desire for heaven” (p. 96) (A Time of Departing, p. 186).

Into the Depths of God is riddled with favorable quotes by and references to a number of contemplative mystics. In addition to Thomas Merton, there is Evelyn Underhill, St. John of the Cross, Esther de Waal, Kathleen Norris, Hildegard of Bingen, Annie Dillard, Bernard of Clairvaux, and St. Anthony (a Desert Father). In Miller’s newer book, The Disciplined Life, Miller again turns to the mystics. Miller also wrote The Path to Celtic Prayer (Celtic spirituality is another avenue through which contemplative is entering the evangelical church).
2. Secondly, Calvin Miller resonates with emergent teacher Marcus Borg. In Miller’s book, The Book of Jesus (2005), Marcus Borg writes an entire chapter for the book. Miller would never include an entire chapter of his own book if it was written by someone he did not resonate with. As Lighthouse Trails has revealed in past articles and books, Marcus Borg denies the tenets of the Christian faith including the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, and His atonement for sin. Roger Oakland discusses Borg in Faith Undone:

Borg explains in his book The God We Never Knew that his views on God, the Bible, and Christianity were transformed while he was in seminary:

Marcus Borg

“I let go of the notion that the Bible is a divine product. I learned that it is a human cultural product, the product of two ancient communities, biblical Israel and early Christianity. As such, it contained their understandings and affirmations, not statements coming directly or somewhat directly from God. . . . I realized that whatever “divine revelation” and the “inspiration of the Bible” meant (if they meant anything), they did not mean that the Bible was a divine product with divine authority.” (p. 125)
This attitude would certainly explain how Borg could say: “Jesus almost certainly was not born of a virgin, did not think of himself as the Son of God, and did not see his purpose as dying for the sins of the world” (p. 125) (from p. 196, Faith Undone).

There’s no possible way that Calvin Miller could have been familiar with Borg’s writings and not been aware of his blatantly anti-Gospel stance. This is a common problem that Lighthouse Trails has had in the past and continues to have that people we are critical of tend to resonate with those who are blatant in their New Age views, but they themselves appear to be relatively benign to the larger evangelical community. (See a book review of one of Borg’s books.)
3. As we have shown above, Calvin Miller holds to contemplative persuasions. And yet, these Bibles have an article written by him within their pages. What this will do is point Bible readers to Miller and his writings and possibly even to Marcus Borg and his writings. To have Calvin Miller’s article in a Bible seems to be a terrible dichotomy: i.e., the Bible points people to the Gospel’s message of the Cross and man’s sinful state and need of a Savior while contemplative, as a movement, points people to man’s supposed divinity and diminishes the need for a Savior.
4. In view of Calvin Miller’s contemplative propensities, let’s briefly examine his article in the Holman Bibles, “Why You Should Read the King James Bible.” In the article, he lists three reasons why the KJV should be read: 1) it is the version your parents and grandparents read 2) it has literary and poetic strength and beauty, and 3) there is ease in memorizing verses in the KJV because of its “high literary resonance.” While these reasons all produce merit, the article seems to turn the KJV into more of a poetic book than the Word of God. While Lighthouse Trails is not in the category of what some call King James Only (in that that is the only version someone can get saved through), we do see it as a standard high above many of the Bible versions available today. Thus we have come to trust it more than others. We find it noteworthy of these two things: one, that emerging church figures (such as Phyllis Tickle who suggest it is a lovely book of poetic literature but not an authority in our lives and Tony Jones who minimizes the authority of the Bible as the Word of God) have done much to disregard the Bible as God’s inspired Word, and two, that the Holman Bibles include someone (Miller) who resonates with a man (Borg) who rejects the basic fundamentals of Christianity and Miller himself speaks of the poetic nature of the Bible.
Another Possible Ramification:
There are serious implications and possible ramifications regarding what is going on here. For instance, something many may not have considered: The King James Bible has no copyright on it because of its age. Bluntly put, anyone can do anything they want to that Bible and still call it the King James Bible. As an example, in some of Holman’s editions, they have changed the spelling of some words (e.g., Saviour to Savior). This might not seem like a big deal to some people, but how do we know what a particular publisher is changing and not changing? If they can change the spellings of words, they can also omit or change words and phrases. For instance, they could change or remove references to homosexuality (e.g., 1 Corinthians 6:9, Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:27) or to the deity of Christ (e.g., Romans 9:5, Isaiah 40:3 – see more). While we do believe that the Lord will preserve and protect His Word, the “editing” of the Kings James Bible could become a free-for-all to emergent-leaning publishers.
Conclusion: Perhaps it would be a good idea to check inside your own Bibles and ones you are giving as gifts and make sure there are no articles written by contemplative and/or emerging authors. If any reading this feel compelled, here is the contact information for Holman Bible Publishers. If you do contact them, please ask them to remove the article by Calvin Miller in their Bible editions.
Note: Lighthouse Trails has put in two calls into Holman, but we have not yet heard back from anyone regarding this matter.Update: On the afternoon of April 8th, shortly after this article was posted, we received a phone call from someone who works at Holman Publishers. She is going to be passing this article onto the editorial department. We were told that LifeWay Resources is the parent company of B & H (Broadman & Holman).

BOOK REVIEW: Putting Away Childish Things, a Tale of Modern Faith by Marcus J. Borg

LTRP Note: While reading this book review
on Marcus Borg’s new book, please bear in mind
two things: one, that Borg rejects essential tenets
of the biblical Christian faith (such as that Jesus Christ
is the Son of God, that he was born of a virgin, and
that He was God), and two, that numerous emerging
“progressive” church leaders have at various times
shown admiration for Borg and his writings (these would
include Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, Calvin Miller (included Borg
in his book, The Book of Jesus), Walter Brueggemann
(helped write Richard Foster’s “Bible”) and at least on
one occasion, Leonard Sweet). After you read this book
review, you may better understand why Lighthouse Trails
is so concerned about the “new” spirituality that has
entered the Christian church and been embraced by so
many of its leaders and pastors.

BOOK REVIEW: “Putting Away Childish Things,
a Tale of  Modern Faith”  by Marcus Borg

By Ted Kyle
Free-lance writer

Putting Away Childish Things, a Tale of Modern Faith by Marcus J. Borg,
published by Harper One, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2010, 342
pages, $25.99.
Learning to Doubt 101
Marcus J. Borg is a veteran of the Christianity wars, having been at one time a member of
The Jesus Seminar, a humanist circle of liberal theologians who set themselves the task of
voting Bible passes “in” or “out,” depending upon their supposed collective wisdom. Borg
is also professor emeritus in the philosophy department at Oregon State University, and
the author of the New York Times best-selling Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, The
Heart of Christianity, The Last Week, and Jesus (from the dust cover). Borg’s latest book,
Putting Away Childish Things, is a novel. It is his first work of fiction, but he uses this vehicle
knowledgeably to make his points. His protagonist is Kate Riley, an assistant professor in
the department of religious studies at a small Midwestern liberal arts college. Kate is serious
about her religion and thinks of herself as a Christian—though her concept of what that
means would not agree with a conservative’s definition: she has had a lover (from whom
she distanced herself when she decided he was not marriage-material), as well as other
sexual encounters, and would not mind another liaison, though the only man she likes in
her surroundings is gay. He is, accordingly, her best friend but not her lover. The thought
that extra-marital sex is sinful adultery does not enter the picture—it is no doubt one of the
strictures that liberals have written out of their workaday Bibles. Sin and the need for
forgiveness receive no honored place at the table in this book. As a story, this is not an easy
read, being burdened with its load of liberal doctrine. But as a literary device to lead the
unwary into swallowing that doctrine, along with the vulnerable student, Erin, it may succeed
very well. Readers should be aware that this is an agenda-driven book. Virtually everything in
it is there for a purpose. The author’s most important point is championing the Age of
Enlightenment’s attack on the inerrancy of the Bible. It is a theme he introduces early
and often throughout the book, as the following dialog illustrates:
Fiona, a member of Kate’s class, Religion and the Enlightenment, spoke up in an early class
discussion:
“I’ve had a couple of courses from Kate—I mean, Professor Riley—before and one of the
things I’ve learned is that we need to set aside our worldview if we’re going to understand
other worldviews…I ‘m not sure where that leads—I just know that there are a lot of different
ways of seeing.” Another student (Andrew, the class skeptic): “But you must know that our
way of seeing things is just one among many. How do we know it’s any better?…. There’s no
one true way of seeing—there are only ways of seeing…. And if you take that
seriously, it means we can’t really know anything for sure” (p. 101).
Another student (Erin) protests: “I belong to a Christian group… We think there are some
absolutes, that there have to be. Otherwise, anything goes.”
Andrew: “And where do you get your absolutes?
Erin: “Well, we—the group I’m part of—get them from the Bible. We—at least most of us—
think the Bible is infallible, because it’s inspired by the Holy Spirit. And we think that if you don’t
think that way, then the Bible is just another book, and you get to pick and choose what you
like and don’t like in it. That’s called cafeteria Christianity.”
Andrew: “So, in a sea of relativity, the Bible is an absolute? The Bible is the exception?”
Kate, the professor, interrupted the silence which followed to say that the discussion is about
“the central question of the course: What happens to the Bible and Christianity within the
framework of modern thought?… What has happened to the notion of sacred scriptures and
sacred traditions over the past three centuries because of the encounter with the Enlightenment?”
It is a thought-provoking session, well-designed to crack open old belief-positions absorbed
without much thought as children. For many, it opens the floodgates of questions and doubts.
Others have already passed that stage and now are convinced that the opening chapters of
Genesis, the miracles in both Testaments, and much else in the Bible are not true. In Kate’s class
they will be exposed to philosophical arguments to strengthens this disbelief.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN THE BOOK
1. The Two Narratives of Jesus’ Birth
One of the major plot twists comes in the form of reaction to a newly-published book by Kate:
Two Stories, One BirthIn the book, she sharply distinguishes between the “stories” of our
Lord’s birth in Matthew and Luke, instead of fitting them together to give a fuller picture of the
occasion, as is normally done. Matthew’s account, she wrote, is dark and threatening, being
dominated by Herod’s plot to kill the infant Jesus. Luke, however, “is basically joyful. There’s no
plot by Herod to Kill Jesus; instead, there are hymns filled with joy” (page 24). Additionally, her
book concludes that in Matthew, Mary and Joseph live in Bethlehem, in contrast to Luke’s
account of the lengthy trip to Bethlehem from Nazareth. She comes to this astounding
conclusion simply because “Matthew’s narrative makes no mention of the couple traveling there,
leading us to assume that Bethlehem is their home” (page 31). All this sets the stage for Kate to
make her case during radio interviews that the stories of Jesus’ birth in both Gospels are parables
—and “parables are about meaning, not factuality. And the truth of a parable is its meaning.
Parables can be truthful, truth-filled, even while not being historically factual” (page 26). The
interviewer responds with a leading question: “As I understand your book, you’re saying that
it doesn’t matter whether there was a star of Bethlehem or wise men bringing gifts, or whether
Jesus was born at home or in a stable, or whether angels sang to shepherds….Would you extend
this to the virgin birth as well—that it doesn’t matter whether it happened?” (page 27). Kate ducks
the question: “Well, my emphasis as a historian is on the meaning of a story of a divine
conception in the context of the first century, not on whether it happened.” Much more is to
come in Kate’s class sessions, where students are subtly led to question the Genesis account of
Creation, including the creation of our first parents, Adam and Eve, miracles in both Testaments,
and much else which is abhorrent to liberal thinking.
[Reviewer’s note: This retreat into theological gobbledygook is standard procedure throughout
the book, in which pregnant suggestions and hanging questions are used to plant doubts,
rather than making direct assertions regarding the unreliability of the Bible.]
2. Setting Us Straight on Homosexuality—and This Is a Biggie!
Erin, the student who has been part of the campus conservative club, The Way, has begun
to question many things she had formerly taken for granted, such as the inerrancy of the Bible.
Then, over the Christmas break, she learnedthat her younger brother is gay, and she is caught
between her feelings for her brother and what the Bible says about homosexuality. Before she
goes to Kate for guidance, she reads two books she finds in the college library (Dirt, Greed  and
Sex, by William Countryman andThe New Testament and Homosexuality by Robin Scroggs)
and in them, she tells Kate, she finds that “homosexuality is an abomination is in a context in
Leviticus that also forbids lots of things that almost all Christians think are fine. Like planting two
kinds o seed in the same field or wearing garments made of two kinds of cloth—I mean that
would rule out blends. We set those laws aside and say they don’t apply to our time—so
why should we think the verse about homosexuality applies to all times? And what they say
about two of the three verses in the New Testament about homosexuality makes sense to me
—that they probably refer to an older man having sex with a young boy… But the part of the
New Testament that I still have trouble with is that passage from Paul in Romans….” She then
reads Romans 1:26-27 aloud. “That’s really strong,” she says to Kate. “…That’s thepassage I
stumble over.” Kate has her read the next verse. Erin reads verse 28, supposedly from her
NIV Student Bible: “Furthermore, since they [the Gentiles] did not think it worthwhile to retain
the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be
done” (page 207).
[Reviewer’s note: The words, “the Gentiles,” are not in the original Greek, nor are they in any
Bible I have ever seen, specifically including the NIV Student Bible. The parenthetical words were
doubtless added by Borg or an editor to buttress the professor’s argument that Paul is simply
repeating “standard Jewish synagogue rhetoric about what Gentiles are like” (page 207). Erin,
who wants to avoid having to regard her brother as under God’s condemnation, is convinced.
And so might be readers of the book who fail to compare the quotation before them with their
own Bibles—for the words appear to be part of the sacred text, despite being placed in a
parenthesis.]
[It seems to this reviewer that Borg has crossed a very hazardous boundary indeed, for the
Bible contains stern warnings about adding to or taking away from God’s Word
(Deuteronomy 4:2 and Revelation 22:18-19, which includes a dire warning for tampering with
God’s Word).]
[While the addition of these words may appeal to those who try to abrogate the Bible’s
condemnation of homosexuality, it cannot be shaken. And Paul’s whole argument in Romans
chapter 1 applies to every individual of whatever persuasion or religion—against “all ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men, who; hold the truth in unrighteousness” (vs. 18).]
Things then get worse in the counseling session: While Erin is absorbing the impact of Kate’s
suggestion that Paul didn’t really mean to call homosexuality an abomination, Kate goes on to
suggest that even if Paul did mean exactly what he said, he could very well have been mistaken
—implying that there is no Holy Spirit inspiration involved (page 209).Truly, wickedness is at work
in this book.
3. Positing Two Jesuses
In a class discussion about the effect of the Enlightenment on the Church’s understanding of
Jesus’ intentions and accomplishments, Kate states in a hand-out that “Jesus as a historical figure
was not the same as the gospels portray him.
This especially the case in John’s gospel”—which, she writes, “is a very developed layer of the
tradition.” In other words, liberal scholars, including The Jesus Seminar, do not believe Jesus
regarded Himself as the Son of God, or Messiah, or the Bread of Life, etc. Nor do they believe
Jesus came to Earth to die as the Lamb of God. All these things, they insist, were claimed for Him,
after His death, by His followers (pages 238-239). These theologians deny especially the factuality
of John’s Gospel, including our Lord’s assertion that “I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
4. Tie-ins with New Age and Emergent Church Thought
Martin, a minor figure in the book, who is Kate’s one-time (and possibly future) lover, outlines
a lecture he will give about mysticism. He jots down: “Would affect our sense of what the word
‘God’ points to: a reality that can be known and that is ‘all around us’—not a person-
like being ‘out there,’ separate from the universe, a super-powerful authority figure
whose existence can be argued about” (page 133). Later we learn that Kate shares this belief with
Martin (page 276).
Additionally, in perhaps the only inclusion of real persons in the book, Brian McLaren and Jim Wallis
are recommended by a faculty member of the seminary that is inviting Kate to fill a temporary
position. He says: “I would love to have either of them on our faculty, though I don’t imagine
they’d be interested. Both are committed evangelicals” (page 149).
5. A Horrifying Glimpse into Liberal Academia
The seminary which has invited Kate for a one-year visiting professorship has, in Martin’s words:
“We have so many specialized points of view here—Asian, African, feminist, womanist, gay, lesbian,
plus, of course, older white male.” He goes on to say: “Don’t get me wrong—I’ve learned a lot
from feminist theology and African theology and Asian theology and gay theology, and I’m
grateful” (page 269).
Conclusion: While I can only conclude that this book will lead readers away from truth
(and from the Gospel) rather than to it, one poem quoted in the book, “Dover Beach”
written by British poet Matthew Arnold in 1870, moved me. Arnold was attempting to describe
how people’s faith in God was being shattered by overtly unbiblical challenges.
The sea is calm tonight,
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits—on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanch’d land,
Listen! You hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furl’d,
But now I only hear its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! For the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.
The third stanza may seem to tell the tale of the Church’s defensive battle against the attacks
of the Enlightenment—a tale of retreat and gathering impotence in the face of worldly knowledge.
Yet the tale is true only on the surface, for God, who cannot lie, has sworn that the gates of hell
shall not prevail against His church. Our Lord has also sworn that His Gospel “shall be preached i
n all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come” (Matt. 24:14).
Though the church in our land is beleaguered, let us recall that “… They are not all Israel, which
are of Israel”(Rom. 9:6), and that all this was foretold: “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that i
n the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines
of devils” (1 Tim. 4:1).
The Church in America, as in Europe in general, has forgotten that “…strait is the gate, and
narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matt. 7:14). We are
called to live as pilgrims and sojourners in a strange land, for this land is not our true home:
we seek another! Meanwhile, let us soldier on for our Captain, holding His banner high, knowing
that our work is not in vain—for our Father declared, “So shall my word be that goeth forth
out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please,
and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isa. 55:11).
Praise His Name!
P.S.: If you wonder about Borg’s title, as I did, I have to tell you that he never mentions
it in the book. But it dawned on me eventually that he is describing Erin, the girl who came to
college clinging to her childhood faith, and lost it in the blaze of the Enlightenment. He’d like to
be describing real persons—people like you and me. But personally, I’d much rather have the
child-like faith that our Lord had in mind when He said: “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall
not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein” (Mark 10:15; Luke 18:17).

EASTERN NAZARENE COLLEGE REJECTS THE BIBLE; MOVES TOWARDS AFFIRMATION OF HOMOSEXUALITY

Eastern Nazarene College Rejects The Bible, Moves Towards Affirmation Of Homosexuality

Quite the headline, isn‘t it?  If you still want to continue sending your children to Eastern Nazarene College, you do so at their peril.  If you know all of what I have been reporting to you in the last few years, and still want to send them there, I question your level of discernment and interest in instilling biblical values for your children.

I’m typing this up rather quickly.  When I was notified of this story, I had mixed reactions.  One was of mental fatigue from seeing nothing but bad news about the state of the Nazarene denomination.  I’m afraid we will be going from worse to worse, and more bad stories will come to light.

I don’t have much interest in writing a long piece on this, I will just let the original article enlighten you as to the depths that the leaders at my old school have gone, and continue to do so apparently.  This fits other pieces of the puzzle well anyway, so I am not surprised.  In a chapel message from last year, (which I am writing about) listen as ENC chaplain Corey McPherson talks about Homosexuality: What Does God Think?  Dr. McPherson speaks more like a confused college student, rather than a spiritual leader who is supposed to give biblical guidance to the students.  But I am certain all the leaders including President McGee are on board with this kind of thinking.  No surprise, since the Nazarene denomination embraces Rob Bell, and Brian McLaren, both who support gay marriage and homosexual “Christians.”

They all need to resign or need to be fired.

As I write this, I am borrowing a paragraph that a friend posted earlier tonight, which expresses my exact sentiments:

“I do not need to say anything about this except to say they have gone way too far here. I will not waste time debating these compromisers of scriptural truth. It is time for a separation and they must be the ones to go, not true Nazarenes. We must have the fortitude to demand that they vacate the premises of our churches and institutions. As long as we remain timid, they will wax worse and worse because we are too fearful or too blindly loyal to a memory that has faded into the past to any longer stand for the truth. Oh, the judgment God will bring upon us if we let this go unchallenged. There is no longer a place for being neutral. Doing nothing is the same as supporting it.”

Heris the article:

Evangelical Colleges Inching Toward Affirmation of Homosexuality

A recent article on the CNN Belief Blog highlighted the trend of Evangelical colleges inching toward culturally acceptable views of homosexuality. The article highlighted Wheaton College, which in February established an official group for “students to explore questions of gender identity and sexual orientation.” Although Wheaton College receives the most attention because of its prominence, other Evangelical schools are making similar moves.

Last

week at Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) student group called ‘Love of God Bringing Triumph,’ announced the college administration approved an LGBT support group through the school’s counseling and health services center. Although the administration denied the group’s initial request for an official club because of concerns about breaches in confidentiality, the new “support group” through the counseling center will ensure the privacy of all students involved.

The new group will only be open to those who identify as “members of the LGBT community, and will walk alongside them as they wrestle through issues that are common to being LGBT.” Some students complained that facilitating the group through the school’s counseling center implies homosexuality is a problem requiring counseling, rather than a legitimate orientation to be affirmed. One student told the college newspaper “I don’t want this to be an excuse for those kids to be put into counseling, because that’s not what they need, they need our support as a community.”

Dr. Vernon Wesley, vice president for Student Development at ENC acknowledged “The questions of ‘affirming’ and ‘condoning’ as a Christian college continue to hover over us.” Athena Horton, a senior who submitted the initial proposal for an official LGBT club said “By even allowing a group to happen in this format, ENC’s administration is saying to the student body that they care about the wellbeing of all of its students—not just the straight ones.” Further, she is “grateful that we have this group, and that we are beginning a journey that is moving in a positive direction when it comes to the LGBT among us.”

In another article for the student newspaper, Horton said “Being LGBT in society today is difficult enough with the stigmas associated with it, but being a part of a Christian community whose denominational stance is that ‘Homosexuality is one means by which human sexuality is perverted … and subject to the wrath of God’ (as stated in the Church of the Nazarene Manual ’09-’13) is even more difficult.’”

Conservative Christian colleges have become a battleground for the LGBT movement’s goal to gain universal acceptance and affirmation. Traditional Christian teachings on sexuality are an affront to their goals, so groups like Soulforce have aggressively targeted Christian campuses to further their agenda. ENC’s group is not the result of Soulforce activity, but illustrates the continued trend of students, alumni, faculty and staff of Christian colleges shifting toward a progressive approach to sexuality. Despite this shift, for LGBT activists establishing a student group within a counseling center is insufficient and even offensive because it indicates homosexual practice is aberrant behavior. Consequently, activists view such groups as a mere first step toward unqualified affirmation.

Soulforce was established in 1998 “to end the religious and political oppression of LGBTQ people” and they specifically target young Christian students through their “Equality Rides” to “hostile” campuses across the country. These “Rides” have “catalyzed conversations and dialogue at these otherwise silent institutions. Soulforce has witnessed real change in practices and policies.” They complain counseling given to students who openly identify as LGBT is “harmful,” “ex-gay,” or “‘reparative’ therapy.”

Through Equality Ride’s seven year history, 14 Christian colleges they visited have relaxed policies on homosexuality. In the same time, “Twenty-five schools and counting have some form of supportive student group, and at least 20 have LGBTQ alumni organizations [not necessarily Christian schools].”

Soulforce knows they will sway young Evangelicals by starting seemingly innocuous “conversations and dialogue,” because many students are unsure what they believe about homosexuality. “Equality Rides” include sessions on scriptural interpretation, intended to dismiss biblical prohibitions of homosexuality.

Without receiving clear instruction on traditional Christian and scriptural teachings about sexuality, often these young believers are ill equipped to defend a faithful perspective on homosexual practice. They are bombarded with messages about “equality,” “tolerance,” and are called “bigots” if they don’t affirm a homosexual lifestyle. When they don’t know how to respond to reinterpretations of scripture, some ultimately conclude there is no legitimate reason to view homosexuality as sinful; that such a belief has no place among their tolerant, nonjudgmental generation.

Christian institutions will have to clearly address homosexuality as the culture increasingly affirms it and more people within the Church openly struggle with same-sex attraction. It is understandable that administrators at these schools recognize the challenges Christian students experiencing same-sex attraction face and want to help and disciple them. At the same time, historically faithful Christian academic institutions should recognize that the ultimate goal of establishing groups expressly for students who identify as LGBT is to legitimize the idea that one’s “sexual orientation” is an inherent and defining characteristic of his personhood.

Christian colleges are communities of young people who are figuring out who they are and what direction their lives will take. They are made up of broken, human people struggling with innumerable sins, all needing discipleship, mentorship, and guidance. Homosexuality is one among many issues students face, and should be addressed with genuine Christian love. Our culture is confused about what it means to be human, and uniquely a man or woman and the Church ought to be a light of clarity amid the chaos. Although a campus is not a church, these institutions play a key role in shaping their students’ lives and they are responsible to clearly teach and equip Christian students to follow God’s design for their lives, including their sexuality.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN LGBTQ SOULFORCE, RICHARD ROHR, MYSTICAL PROPHETIC ART, AND OBAMA’S INCLUSIVENESS

Christian News Network, http://christiannews.net/2013/04/04/homosexual-activist-to-present-lion-of-judah-painting-to-obama-during-easter-prayer-breakfast/ has reported that Obama has received a framed painting of the Lion of Judah as a gift from a “prophetic artist”, Latimer Bowen Ramsey, http://latimerramsey.com/. It was presented to Obama by the Reverend Doctor Cindi Love, Executive Director of Soulforcehttp://www.soulforce.org/, and http://www.edgeboston.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc3=&id=104474, at the annual Easter prayer breakfast, calling Obama the “Great Includer”.
Rev. Dr. Cindi Love http://www.revdrcindilove.com/http://revcindilove.blogspot.com/, is a licensed professional minister ordained by Metropolitan Community Churches worldwide (gay affirming). She also holds standing in The Church of Uncommon Hope in San Francisco, CA.  She is Executive Director of Soulforce, a member of the United Nations Compass Coalition for LGBT Human Rights, member of the Human Rights Campaign Religion & Faith Council in Washington, D.C., one of eight Country & Thematic Specialists for Amnesty International and author of Would Jesus Discriminate?  The 21st Century Question.  Rev. Love was the Pastor in Residence for the HBO documentary film All Aboard by Rosie O’Donnell.  Rev. Love lives in Abilene, Texas with her legally married spouse, Sue Jennings.  They have two adult children.  She is also working for the Huffington Post and this is her biography there: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rev-dr-cindi-love/.

Ramsey delivered a letter of prayer to Obama http://latimerramsey.com/press/, wherein she states: “I am praying that—His Holy Spirit will be upon you and will be bubbling up and over our land and that all darkness will flee and nothing but His glory, love and truth will remain.”
In this video, Ramsey clearly shows her mystical side in word, music, and art, although her own sexual and spiritual preferences are as yet unknown, pending further research. However, based on her associations, Ramsey is either neutral about the gay lifestyle and/or she’s sympathetic and affirming, as well as totally non-judgmental when it comes to our evil president. At least we can declare without hesitation that Obama is not worthy of such a gift, not worthy of another inappropriate title (like Andy Stanley’s naming Obama “pastor-in-chief”). Ramsey is talking about and painting pictures of a stylized, mystical, effeminate distortion (as in: “Nostril to Nostril Close”, http://latimerramsey.com/nostril-to-nostril-close/), of a Jesus of her own imagination, a Jesus who returns to unite believers and unbelievers, saints and sinners, Christians and pagans alike within a universalist one world religion. This is absolutely a blasphemy of the first order, since the real Jesus of the Bible will return like a roaring lion to destroy the evils these people call good, not the tame lion “just getting along” with the other animals. So, as Ramsey seeks to spread her false gospel to billions across the globe by using her iconic, so-called “prophetic” artwork, we will recognize it for what it is, another heresy that denies the true Jesus who will hold these to accountability.

Brock Cravy, a professing Christian who operates the art gallery The White Buffalo, who arranged the presentation, likewise claimed that God had arranged the homosexual activist to present the painting to the White House.
“Soulforce is a religious organization that promotes homosexuality nationwide. It was founded by Mel White, the former ghost writer for Billy Graham, Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell, who later came out as a homosexual.
Apprising indicates in http://apprising.org/2009/06/29/richard-rohr-letter-of-endorsement-for-soulforce/, that Soulforce was co-founded by two men, Mel White and Gary Nixon, who also happen to be “Christian” homosexual lovers:

During the past six years, Mel White and his partner, Gary Nixon, have traveled across the country, speaking on university campuses, teaching the “soul force” principles of Gandhi and King, organizing people of faith…the Rev. Dr. Mel White was awarded the ACLU’s National Civil Liberties Award for his efforts to apply the “soul force” principles of Gandhi and King to the struggle for justice for sexual minorities.
Currently, Mel is writing a sequel to his best-selling autobiography, Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay And Christian In America… For 30 years, Dr. White had served the evangelical Christian community as a pastor, seminary professor, best-selling author, prize-winning filmmaker, communication consultant and ghost writer to its most famous and powerful leaders…
Mel and Gary met and fell in love fifteen years ago at All Saints Episcopal Church where Mel served on the vestry and Gary sang baritone in the Coventry Choir… Dr. White has dedicated his life to a ministry of change. “Until this nation accepts God’s gay and lesbian children as full members of the human family,” White explains, “we must go on telling that truth in love, whatever it might cost us.” (Online source)

Soulforce is also behind the youth tour “Equality Ride,” which visits Christian colleges and universities across the country to urge students to become open and accepting of the homosexual lifestyle.” See: http://juicyecumenism.com/2013/04/03/evangelical-colleges-inching-toward-affirmation-of-homosexuality/.

Soulforce is behind the “right to marry” for LGBTQ persons:

Soulforce did a “meditation mob” OM at the state capitol building in Austin, Texas, on Veterans Day, 2012, and this video is narrated by Cindi Love, who claims she was once a fundamentalist Christian whose “understanding has evolved”:

Meditation Mob http://medmob.org/, has been organizing OM meditations all around the country, as in one of their events in 2011, also at the state capitol in Austin, Texas. Over 300 people joined in unison for a one hour silent meditation followed by a sound-bath of OMs that resonated throughout the capitol dome. The intention of the movement is to organize meditations open to all walks of life, all over the world, expanding peace on the planet by exposing the world to meditation, & accelerating our personal and planetary evolution:

Apprising, however, pointed out the connection between Richard Rohr, quasi-universalist, mystic Catholic Franciscan priest, and his endorsement of Soulforce here: http://apprising.org/2009/06/29/richard-rohr-letter-of-endorsement-for-soulforce/
Rohr is also quoted in full at: http://www.archives.soulforce.org/2000/10/08/fr-richard-rohrs-letter-of-endorsement/. Here is the full letter:

Brothers and Sisters of the Church:
What is more important than to follow Jesus? Is that not our final and fundamental authority for everything that we do, either as leadership or membership in the church?
Apart from understandable disagreements on specifics, details, how, when, and where, we all the know the WHAT. Jesus came to draw us all into union with God, whom he called his Father. How sad if the public image of our church continues to be a group of people that judge first, exclude easily, and use theological arguments to cover basic “political” stances of power, image, and management of constituency. These seem to be things that Jesus cared about very little, in fact, he flaunted them. This is clear in the Gospels which we all proclaim with joy.
At last we have a group of dedicated Christians who are willing to use disciplined and Christian means of nonviolent protest against its church’s failure to live the Gospel. Christians outside the mainstream did this in the abolitionist movement against slavery, in the civil rights movement against racism, and in the antiwar movement. Eventually, in each case, the church, like Peter running late to the tomb, acknowledged that these were indeed Gospel positions.
SOULFORCE must take the role of John the Beloved, who runs swiftly to the tomb, because that is what love always does. But both of us will find there the Risen Christ who always reigns and transforms human history, but never without our “let it be.” Our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered brothers and sisters have been left outside of his realm of grace for far too long. We can do so much better, and we will. I thank SOULFORCE for its courage, dedication, and proclamation of Christian nonviolence in the pursuit of justice and truth.
Yours in Christ Jesus,
Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M.
