Unions are getting a free pass after mismanaging their multi-employer pensions for decades. In a provision not well-publicized before the stimulus bill narrowly passed by the Senate with only Democrat support, $86 billion dollars will be directed to at least185 multi-employer union pension plans that are close to collapse. According to the New York Times:
Both the House and Senate stimulus measures would give the weakest plans enough money to pay hundreds of thousands of retirees — a number that will grow in the future — their full pensions for the next 30 years. The provision does not require the plans to pay back the bailout, freeze accruals or to end the practices that led to their current distress, which means their troubles could recur. Nor does it explain what will happen when the taxpayer money runs out 30 years from now.
The pension crisis is not new and fixing it has long been a Democrat priority. Congress passed legislation in 2014 to allow insolvent pensions to pare benefits within limits to prevent bailouts by the taxpayer. However, President Obama’s Treasury Department blocked the Central States Pension Fund’s plan to use the law in 2016. The media framed this denial as an attempt to force a straight bailout, and here we are.
At the time, the responsibility to cover the fund’s projected insolvency would have fallen to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), which had its own insolvency issues. The Central States fund was paying $3.46 in benefits for every dollar it took in due to an aging former workforce and employer withdrawals:
Legislators thought they fixed this problem late in 2014 when they attached bipartisan legislation to the so-called “cromnibus” spending bill. The pensions amendment allowed trustees for financially troubled multiemployer pension plans to cut vested benefits, provided they could demonstrate to Treasury that doing so would prevent the plan from going bust. The idea was that the cuts would prevent a far worse fate — a Central States bailout by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, which would pay only pennies on the dollar (and which had solvency problems of its own). According to a recent PBGC report, “it is more likely than not that PBGC’s multiemployer fund will be exhausted by 2025.”
Joshua Gotbaum, former director of the PBGC, called the Treasury Department’s decision an “act of political cowardice” that will result in “more and deeper benefit cuts” to Central States beneficiaries.
The PBGC board of directors consists of the secretaries of Labor, Commerce, and Treasury, with the secretary of Labor as chair. It is not supposed to be funded by taxpayers and covers payments to failed employer pensions. From their website:
In fiscal year 2020, PBGC paid for monthly retirement benefits, up to a guaranteed maximum, for more than 984,000 retirees in more than 5,000 single-employer plans that cannot pay promised benefits. Including those who have not yet retired and participants in multiemployer plans receiving financial assistance, PBGC is responsible for the current and future pensions of more than 1.5 million people.
The PBGC handles multi-employer and single-employer plans through separate programs. The current legislation will provide $86 billion from general funds to be kept separate from the funds it uses for general operations. Perhaps the most disturbing facet of this is that there are no conditions placed on the pensions that will fix the underlying problem.
The legislation requires the troubled plans to keep their grant money in investment-grade bonds, and bars them from commingling it with their other resources. But beyond that, the bill would not change the funds’ investment strategies, which are widely seen as a cause of their trouble.
A proposal for structural reforms failed:
On Friday, Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa, introduced his own legislative proposal for the failing pension plans, which he said would bring structural reforms to make them solvent over the long term. He called the measure put forth by Democrats “a blank check” and tried to have it sent back to the Senate Finance Committee for retooling.
“Not only is their plan totally unrelated to the pandemic, but it also does nothing to address the root cause of the problem,” Mr. Grassley said in a statement. His motion failed in a vote of 49 to 50.
To illustrate how large this segment of the funds provided for is, Senator Bill Haggerty (R-Tenn.) said: “Just to show you how bad this bill is, there’s more money in this to bail out union pension funds than all the money combined for vaccine distribution and testing,”
Democrats are trying to say the pandemic made the pension shortfalls worse, but that would seem to be an overstatement because stock market performance has not suffered dramatically during that time. The 10-year inflation-adjusted return for 2020 was 11.96%. The S&P 500 increased 16% in 2020 alone.
This bailout appears to be just another giveback long in the making. According to Time magazine, the coordinated plan to influence to 2020 election originated in the national office of the AFL-CIO. Multi-employer unions, such as the Teamsters and United Autoworkers, are powerful constituencies for the union leadership. One huge Teamster plan that expected to go broke in 2025 just got rescued. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka now has a material win to offset the devastation that has already started and will likely continue in the energy industry.
Taxpayer funding of pensions was unheard of up to this point. Even those who have saved appropriately in defined contribution plans like 401(k)s will also fund their fellow citizens’ pensions through their tax dollars. This taxpayer bailout may be the first time, but given that the bill requires almost no reforms, it increases the likelihood it will not be the last.

CNN provided a platform for NYU medical ‘ethics’ professor Arthur Caplan Sunday, who argued that Americans skeptical of taking the COVID vaccine will soon come around and accept it if their freedoms otherwise remain restricted.
Caplan argued that allowing people to have their freedoms returned after lockdown is the most “powerful incentive” to push the vaccine.
“If you promise people more mobility, more ability to get a job, more ability to get travel, that’s a very powerful incentive to actually achieve fuller vaccination,” Caplan told Fareed Zakaria.
The segment even began with the infamous ‘show me your papers’ scene from the movie Casablanca:
Caplan argued that Americans will “gain freedom” if a COVID certification system is enacted.
Caplan continued “Vaccine passports do require access; it’s hard to impose anything unless you are pretty sure that somebody can get a vaccine. So I think it’ll be a little while before we see this, let’s say within the U.S.”
“But there are going to be communities and areas of the country where it starts to make sense due to high availability of the vaccine to say, ‘you wanna come back to work in person? Gotta show me a vaccine certificate. You wanna go in a bar, a restaurant? Gotta show me a vaccine certificate,’” he added.
When asked about the dangers of a two-tier society, and who can get access to the vaccine, Caplan stated “I think there will be some inequality in the U.S., but hopefully it’ll wash out quickly as the supplies increase very rapidly, I think they’re going to.”
Caplan predicted that “the world won’t wait for vaccine passports” until all countries are ready, and that they will be put into place regardless of whether poorer or less equipped countries can be a part of the system.
As we reported last week, New York City has unveiled a vaccine passport system in conjunction with IBM, trialling it at two sports events so far.
Covid passport systems, which we have been covering for months now, are being rapidly adopted worldwide both domestically and for international travel, despite the fact that the immunity status of vaccinations is not yet extensively known, and despite warnings that such schemes could lead to mass discrimination against those who choose not to take the shot.

Pharmaceutical and medical device giant Johnson & Johnson, Inc. (J&J) announced on Feb. 28, 2021 plans to test its experimental Ad26.COV2.S vaccine for COVID-19 on infant children (including newborns), pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems. J&J did not include infants, pregnant women or the immunocompromised in the U.S. population in clinical trials on the experimental COVID-19 vaccine last year.1 2 3
A recent article in New York Magazine noted:
The initial clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines didn’t include children, which is standard practice; now, trials for younger children are happening in descending order of age, calibrating the best dosage for each cohort.3
The announcement by J&J came the day after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted J&J subsidiary Janssen Biotech, Inc. an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to distribute the vaccine in the U.S. for use by individuals 18 years of age and older. Currently, the single-dose Ad26.COV2.S vaccine cannot be given to anyone in the U.S. under 18 years old.4 5 6 7.8
According to a spokesperson for Janssen, which manufactures Ad26.COV2.S, the single-dose vaccine will first be tested on children between 12 and 18 years old. Afterward, J&J will proceed quickly to test the vaccine on infants, pregnant women and immunocompromised people.2
J&J’s move to test its COVID-19 vaccine on very young children, as well as pregnant women and immunocompromised people, was expected. The plans to perform these clinical trials were reportedly included in J&J’s application to the FDA for Emergency Use Approval (EUA) and were discussed by members of the FDA advisory committee that reviewed J&J’s data on Ad26.COV2.S.2 9
“They (J&J) did not get into a lot of detail about it but did make it clear they will be pursuing pediatric and maternal coronavirus immunization studies,” said FDA advisory committee member Ofer Levy, MD, PhD, director of the Precision Vaccines Program at Harvard University’s Boston Children’s Hospital.2
J&J’s planned COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials will be the first to include infants. AstraZeneca plc, which has produced the experimental AZD1222 vaccine for COVID-19 in partnership with Oxford University, has been conducting clinical trials on children as young as six years of age, while Moderna, Inc. and Pfizer, Inc. (in partnership with BioNTech SE) are currently testing their experimental mRNA-1273 and BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccines on children as young as 12.10 11
J&J began shipping out four million doses of Ad26.COV2.S on Mar. 1. The company has pledged that it will have 20 million doses of the vaccine ready to distribute by the end of March and 100 million doses by this summer.3

Israel has rolled out what it is calling a ‘Freedom bracelet’, a tracking device that will serve as an alternative to a two-week quarantine for anyone entering the country from abroad.
The device, which looks like a smart watch is being produced by a company called SuperCom, which has previously worked with governments of several countries on systems to track and monitor prisoners.

Ordan Trabelsi, the CEO of SuperCom, said “We call it a ‘freedom bracelet’ because we are not locking anybody up, but rather giving them the opportunity to go home.”
…And be tracked by the government if they try to leave their house.
“Nobody is forced to do it, but for those who are interested, it gives them another option: more flexibility,” Trabelsi added.

So, the choices are be locked up for two weeks in a military-administered quarantine hotel, or take the tracking bracelet.
It doesn’t really sound like ‘freedom’.
The development comes at the same time as a court ruling demanding that the country’s domestic spy agency the Shin Bet must back off Covid-19 contact-tracing surveillance.
The court ruled that the efforts are “draconian” and a threat to democracy in the country, and can only be used in emergencies.
Israel is also operating a two tier society where those who have been vaccinated have a ‘green pass’ to go where they want, and those who haven’t must stay under lockdown.

A survey conducted in December 2020 by the Blue Star Families, a non-profit military advocacy organization, found that 53 percent of U.S. military families do not want to get the experimental COVID-19 vaccines being distributed under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).1
The survey included a total of 674 respondents representing active-duty families, of which 33 percent said that they would get a COVID-19 vaccine approved by the FDA should it become available for free.2 Of the 53 percent of military families who responded to the survey indicating that they would not get the vaccine, nearly three-quarters cited a distrust of the development process or timeline.3
Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families said that:
What we’ve seen is that military families are expressing a lot of concern about the vaccine. We’re seeing that people don’t have a sense of trust about the vaccine. They have strong concerns about the development process and timeline.4
One military spouse wrote in the comments section of the survey, “I am looking for long-term placebo-controlled studies. I do not want my family, or service members to be guinea pigs.”5 About 14 percent of the survey respondents said they remain undecided on whether they would take get the COVID-19 vaccine, with most respondents saying they would like more information of side effects to make that decision.6
Jennifer Akin, a Blue Star Families researcher said that Blue Star Families survey is not a scientific poll; however, the results provide a baseline for observing acceptance or reluctance over time.7
According to the Pentagon, U.S. troops deployed overseas and those charged with critical national security missions are declining to get vaccinated for COVID-19.8 Some 320,000 service members and civilian personnel have been vaccinated, leaving a significant amount of the 769,000 doses available to Department of Defense (DoD) unused.9
Pentagon officials said as long as the COVID-19 vaccines are classified as EUA by the FDA and not fully licensed, the DoD cannot mandate service members to take the vaccine.10 Air Force Brigadier General Paul Friedrichs said that even those personnel responsible for manning America’s nuclear weapons are refusing to get the vaccine. Air Force Global Strike Command spokeswoman Chief Master Sergeant Jill M. LaVoie added:
Because we believe that the COVID-19 vaccine is the important next step to fortifying our forces, we are encouraging our Airmen receive the vaccination but this is a personal decision for each of our Strikers to make.11
LaVoie added, “Our medical professionals will continue to educate our personnel on the vaccination so that they can best make that decision for themselves.”12

For 150 years New York City Public Schools have remained continuously open and undaunted by all manner of calamities and natural disasters. Throughout our history from the Spanish Flu of 1918, the Great Depression, two World Wars, Cold War panic, civil unrest, the terrorist attacks on Sept 11, 2001, to Hurricane Sandy, the schools have always been open.
Not until 2020 has New York had a governor, a mayor, and a political class during a time of crisis, who have so miserably failed the children of New York. They have put our children in harm’s way physically, emotionally and academically. We do not know the full scope of the consequences of these failures on the part of our political leadership, but the closing of our schools for 10 months and likely longer can be considered one of the biggest scandals in the history of our country. It has already taken an enormous toll on a generation of our children suffering in remote-learning environments, sequestered on endless video games. The laundry list of physical, emotional and academic maladies affecting our children due to remote-learning include mental illness, suicide, sickness, depression, anxiety, weight gain, isolation, 10 months of squandered learning, and lost opportunities for academic and athletic scholarships.
It has taken an enormous toll on working and middle-class parents and their extended family as well. The balancing act that parents must perform is work, their child’s education, and the financial stability of their families. These challenges that parents face are simply devastating. Never has the pressure been so unevenly placed upon the family unit than it has today by New York politicians.
The public heaved a big sigh of relief when teachers were classified as essential and went to the front of the line for Phase 1 of the vaccinations. We all thought that within a short span of time, we would see the beginning of the reopening of our schools and the return to normalcy.
Teachers who were in their 20’s went to the head of the line, in front of seniors and people with comorbidities. But the public was ok with it because teachers are essential to the education and development of our greatest asset in America, our children.
The public was willing to let the teachers go to the front of the line and were hopeful to see the light at the end of the remote-learning tunnel. But the hope soon turned to despair as we were conned once again. The bait and switch charade pulled off on the public was from a minor faction of teachers and the union leadership who are still balking about going back into the classroom. While teachers are considered essential in receiving preferential treatment, our children are an afterthought.
For 150 years, New York’s political leadership understood the prime importance and significance of a good education, to ensure successful outcomes for future generations of our children. In 2020, the world changed. Elected officials abdicated their responsibilities in government and leadership roles regarding the education of our children, and left it in the hands of union leaders and a few selfish interests.
The political con job they played on parents and their kids was in promoting their misleading narrative that the classroom environment is unsafe. While the city’s schools closed for 10 months, Catholic and private schools have effectively remained open, and the teachers are safely at work doing in-person learning. The CDC never recommended schools close, and the CDC Director said schools are 'one of the safest places' for kids during the pandemic. Catholic schools are already starting up their after-school sports programs to begin on March 1st. Our local and state elected officials have failed our children, our parents, our communities, and our country, and there will be dire consequences for all.
The torturous road of the pandemic is indeed one filled with many heartbreaks. Our schools are central to a thriving society today and for future generations to come. We offer some simple guidance for the days that lay ahead. Vaccinations for teachers and school staff started in January. By the middle of April all personnel of the city’s Department of Education, should have been vaccinated. The mayor, City Council, and DOE should require all teachers and staff to be back at work by April 15th. Citywide information portals should clearly communicate the planned reopening so that everyone understands NYC schools are in fact fully opened five days a week with after-school activities. The consequences for those civil service employees who fail to report to work is the implementation of the Taylor Law to enforce back-to-work orders. This is above and beyond the realm of politics, union contracts, and special interests, and once and for all, decisive action must be taken.
What has been going on since March of last year has been near criminal. Never before in the history of our country, has a government and its political leadership so forsaken our most cherished resource in the present and for the future of our country. Our children are essential.

On Sunday, February 14th, hundreds of freedom-loving Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario to denounce the left-wing government-enforced Chinese coronavirus measures. The pro-freedom crowd demanded Justin Trudeau’s left-wing government stop all coronavirus-related restrictions that infringe on their personal rights, destroy businesses, and harm the national economy.
The MC for the event and coordinator of activities was Toronto-based political activist Kelly Anne Wolfe. The Hugs Over Mask protest organizer has been arrested twice so far, for “being a common nuisance and disturbing the peace”, terms now used for anyone questioning Canada’s left-wing government’s increasingly authoritarian and lockdown measures.
Hugs Over Masks is a Canadian organization whose mission, according to their website is to restore Canadian “civil liberties, democracy, and way of life during these unprecedented times.”
Wolfe’s first arrest occurred in January while speaking to a crowd in Toronto’s Dundas Square at a rally she helped to organize. During her speech, Wolfe instructed protestors “that they had the right to remain silent, that they did not have to engage with these officers, that carding, (Demanding identification) was illegal”. Wolfe’s words appeared to incite the officers to wade through the crowd and detain her.
Ms. Wolfe was arrested and thrown into solitary confinement at a Toronto Jail. Police charged the activists under the “common nuisance” provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada. Ms. Wolfe has filed a lawsuit against the Toronto Police and others involved in her arrest and her maltreatment.

Waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer money in the coronavirus relief package Congress passed last year have reached "staggering" levels, to an extent not fully known but estimated to be more than $100 billion, according to a report from NBC News.
Last year, while the American people were in the full grip of economic hardship imposed on them by the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic, the United States Congress passed a $2 trillion spending bill to provide economic relief. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, was intended to give needed aid to 17 million unemployed people, help small businesses survive, and provide stimulus checks for every nearly American.
But liars, cheaters, and scammers have swindled billions of dollars from the U.S. government, stealing money from taxpayers and depriving people in need of the economic relief Congress appropriated for them during the pandemic.
"The Labor Department inspector general has yet to complete a full investigation but, based on previous programs, estimates at least $63 billion of the $630 billion in disbursements has been misspent," NBC News reported Saturday. "The full scope of the loss in taxpayer funds is likely many times higher, experts and officials say, soaring well beyond $100 billion."
In California, one fraud scheme disrupted by police cost taxpayers an estimated $11 million. Police say a social services business charged non-qualifying individuals $700 each to file false unemployment claims.
"This isn't just an Orange County problem. It isn't just a California problem," Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said. "This is a breakdown of catastrophic proportions that has failed the American taxpayer."
California is currently conducting a review of its COVID-19 relief program and estimates that fraud may have cost taxpayers as much as $30 billion, or 27% of relief spending. In Nebraska, an audit of unemployment benefit spending found that about 66% of payments made last June were misspent. Many states have not reviewed their coronavirus relief spending, so the total amount of fraud nationwide remains difficult to quantify, but nevertheless massive.
"In California, this is unquestionably the largest fraud against public agencies in our history," Vern Pierson, president of the California District Attorneys Association, said. "Increasingly we are learning there could be fraud of historic proportions nationwide. While we don't know the exact price tag, we know the amount of the loss of taxpayers is staggering."
Law enforcement experts interviewed by NBC News described how the federal government relied on state agencies to distribute coronavirus relief funds, despite warnings that these agencies were ill-equipped to deal with con artists and other criminal organizations.
For example, one new program flagged by the Labor Department as "high risk," the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, was intended to help gig workers, caregivers, and self-employed people collect unemployment insurance. These workers typically don't qualify for federal unemployment insurance, but Congress mandated that coronavirus relief be made available to them. So state agencies had to rely on self-reported work history to determine who qualified to claim unemployment checks. Facing a "crushing" volume of claims made and political pressure to get people coronavirus relief, states also relaxed oversight on spending. An auditor in Kentucky reportedly found that the program's oversight was so weakened that the state actually violated federal law.
Criminals obviously exploited the program, and the full extent of widespread fraud is currently unknown and being investigated by several state governments. The most prolific fraudsters appear to be transnational organized crime rings located in West Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, law enforcement officials told NBC News.
The U.S. Department of Justice has created a task force to investigate fraud nationwide. According to the DOJ, more than 100 defendants have been charged across 71 cases related to CARES Act unemployment fraud. NBC reports federal law enforcement has seized or frozen $65 million, about half of the losses associated with the crimes.
In December, months after the CARES Act was passed, Congress finally required states to verify the identity of unemployment claimants. ID.me, a company contracted with 21 states to combat the "veritable tsunami" of fraud, told NBC News the criminal activity facing states is a "national crisis."
ID.me said that in about 20% of the fraudulent claims, identity thieves use Social Security numbers and other personal information stolen in data breaches. Another 10% of fraud schemes are "social engineering" scams where criminals convince a victim to share personal data or cooperate in fraud by posing as potential employers or even government officials. Some thieves have used computer-generated 3D-printed masks of victims' faces to pass identity verification checks.
The fraud is so brazen that criminals have stolen the identities of high-profile political figures like Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R), and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul.
Millions of Americans who have received 1099 tax forms from the IRS without receiving benefits may be victims of fraud.
In a statement, the Labor Department told NBC News: "We are working on a comprehensive approach to partnering with states to minimize fraud, waste and abuse, while making sure Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own are able to receive the benefits they deserve and desperately need."

At the four star Crowne Plaza Hotel overlooking lawns on the outskirts of London, 20-year-old Abdul from the Sudan says he is pleased with his new life here in Britain.
He proclaims proudly: ‘I was given the vaccination yesterday at the hotel to stop me catching Covid. There are 400 migrants living here and we nearly all had it. No one I know refused.’
Tapping his arm to show the site of the injection, he adds in faltering English: ‘It’s important that we don’t catch the virus and get sick.’
Abdul, who slipped into the UK from France seven months ago, seems blissfully unaware that thousands of Britons older than him, or in vulnerable groups, still await the jab – and may not be offered it for several months.
Neither did he seem to realise that he might be accused of using up a precious dose that could protect others – including key workers – higher on the priority list.
Outside the hotel, the Daily Mail talked to ten other migrants from the Sudan and Eritrea who also took part in what they describe as a ‘mass vaccination’ operation on Thursday this week.
Among them were two Sudanese friends aged 27 and 35. The younger man said he was delighted to be offered it: ‘The vaccinations were given to us whatever our age.
‘We didn’t have to pay. We were told to queue up for them at the hotel. None of us want to catch the coronavirus.’
He added: ‘This was the first vaccination and I don’t know which company made it. We will have another one nearer the summer time.’
A Government spokesman last night said it was ‘totally unacceptable’ for the healthy young migrants to be receiving the jabs contrary to guidelines, and that the NHS was taking action to ensure it did not happen again.
The Crowne Plaza, near Heathrow airport, is among scores of hotels across Britain housing migrants who have slipped into the country illegally by lorry from Europe or on a boat from northern France to the south coast.
Many have been put up at the hotel for weeks – or, like Abdul, even months – as they await their asylum claims to be decided. They say the bedrooms are ‘wonderful’ and the English breakfast ‘very good’….

Governor Ron DeSantis is responding to rumors that the Biden administration is considering travel restrictions for his state. The onslaught of criticism for the way DeSantis is handling the pandemic has reached a crescendo following the Super Bowl coverage showing residents moving freely, with and without masks, in the stadium stands and celebrating the game. DeSantis was photographed maskless in a box seat and preemptively told the press he couldn’t drink a beer with the mask on, and beer is required to watch your home team play in the big game. They were unimpressed.
Here is an example of the overwrought and grossly inaccurate coverage from the unimpressive and often wrong Joy Reid. She asks “health experts” how the nation can manage the pandemic while governors like Ron DeSantis supposedly oppose them. She accused him of caring more about keeping the state open for business than keeping people alive:
“How do you deal with dumb governors?” Reid asked. Too funny. Governor De Santis, who runs circles around Reid on the intelligence scale, set the record straight:

In his remarks, DeSantis called the very idea of restriction travel “unconstitutional, unwise, and unjust.” He added: “It would be a purely political attack on the people of Florida.”
To support his contention, he cited COVID-19 statistics from December 1st to demonstrate Florida’s results are better than most states across the country, especially on the metric that matters most. Florida ranks as follows:
On every metric, Florida outperforms at least half the country, and on the one that matters, fatalities per capita, it is in the bottom 10. That is even more impressive given the percentage of Florida residents over 65 compared to New York and California. It sounds as if DeSantis is willing to duke this issue out in court and force the Biden administration to justify any decision to restrict travel:
We will not back down. If anyone tries to harm Floridians or target us, we will respond very quickly.
Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight and reiterated DeSantis’s assertion that this was political. He also agreed that the idea the Biden administration is considering restricting the movement of citizens when it allows illegal immigrants to flow over the border and get released into the country is absurd. When Carlson said the very idea almost seemed like a punishment, Rubio responded:
Rubio also noted the flow of Americans moving from blue states to Florida and said they are now seeing people move in from California, which is new. He said this was partially motivated by the pandemic lockdowns in other states that include kicking children out of school for nearly a year. However, he also argued that rising crime, deteriorating sanitation, and anarchy in the streets in large Democrat-run states are compounding the desire to relocate.
Adding to the idea that attacking Florida by proposing a travel restriction is mainly political, wide-open Georgia lies directly to the north. Governor Brian Kemp reopened first last spring and endured similar media attacks. The state remains every bit as open as Florida and has a Republican governor. On several metrics for the pandemic, Georgia’s performance is still good, but not as good as Florida. The UK variant of COVID-19 has also been found in the state, which is part of the administration’s pretext for restricting Florida.
So why restrict Florida and not Georgia? Look at an election map for 2020. Georgia went blue with a little help from outside money dumped into large blue counties. Florida went redder than it did in 2016. There is a case to be made that targeting Florida is just as much about sending a message to voters as it is about attacking Governor DeSantis.
On Dec. 22, 2020, a non-profit limited company based in Great Britain that calls itself the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) published a report entitled The Anti-Vaxx Playbook. It contains false and misleading information about the Fifth International Public Conference on Vaccination, which was sponsored by the 39-year old U.S. non-profit educational charity the National Vaccine Information Center, and held online in October 2020. Promotion of the CCDH report resulted in the spreading of fake news and misinformation by mainline media outlets in Great Britain and the U.S. NVIC’s pay-for-view digital conference was transparently open to the public and featured presentations by 51 speakers from the U.S. and other countries discussing vaccine science, public health policy and law, informed consent and civil liberties. Dedicated to “Protecting Health and Autonomy in the 21st Century,” the conference was made available on Feb. 2, 2021 for free viewing online.

For reasons unknown, there are still raging debates over whether or not to reopen schools. Simultaneously, schools in states like Georgia and Florida have been open since the fall and managed to keep the children whose parents want them to attend school in person open most of the time. Where they have not been prohibited, private schools opened nationwide. Multiple studies in the U.S. have shown that transmission of COVID-19 is minimal in the school setting, supported by data across the globe.
Even the CDC has recognized this data, citing “scant” transmission in the classroom. Yet nationwide, children are still learning remotely. Most often, continued closures involve irrational demands from teachers’ unions and teachers’ associations. This debate is raging in several counties in Virginia, where it is up to the individual school districts to decide how to provide instruction. One mother, Yael Levin-Sheldon, has had enough.
She has been coordinating a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to collect data on the negative impact these closures have had on children. Today, she released the data summary for emergency room visits for self-harm and suicide for children between 10 and 19 in her Central Virginia health region. The incidence of emergency room visits in this age group per 100,000 has gone up year-over-year in every single one of the seven counties. Some of the increases are startling.
In Henrico County, Levin-Sheldon’s home county, the rate went from 34.6 per 100,000 in 2019 to 180.8 per 100,000 in 2020. She was motivated to begin collecting data after advocating for schools in her district in June. In the process of her advocacy, she has been called a teacher-killer and a racist in public meetings and online forums. Levin-Sheldon said she is frustrated because all of the private schools in her area are open. Watching her own children’s behavior changes has been devastating.
Her two children were thriving students who loved school and received good grades. Now, she re-teaches them each evening after their remote learning classes to help them to maintain their grades. However, she has needed to seek professional help for both children. Her older child is exhibiting symptoms of OCD and has developed several compulsive habits, including obsessive handwashing. Her younger child has become emotionally labile, showing a wide range of behavior in short periods, from severe anger outbursts to inconsolable tears in minutes.
Levin-Sheldon says there is a school board meeting on Thursday, but the public is not allowed to attend. She expects no progress as the last teachers’ association demand was to fully vaccinate the teachers a month apart and wait the two weeks for effectiveness. The CDC director said today that that was not required. At any rate, it will not happen in Henrico County until the end of March in the best-case scenario. That is right before spring break, and at best, children may get a few weeks of in-person classes before school is out. Levin-Sheldon said:
I know a number of teachers and don’t blame them. Several are ready to return to school and are afraid to speak up. They are being bullied by the Henricho Education Association. I blame a lack of leadership from the school board and by Superintendent Dr. Amy Cashwell.
In Chesterfield County, Kristin Gladstone has similar frustrations. She has a special-needs high school student who is back to school in-person, only because of the small class size. These students are alone in the building, and the student is missing his regular classroom experience outside of the special education program.
Her freshman has attended school for precisely four days since the original shutdown. When they immediately went back to distance learning, her child looked at her and said, “Mom, I’m just losing hope.” This honors student struggled to get average grades last semester and ended up with two Ds. Now, the child is talking about dropping out of school and suffering from decreased appetite, insomnia, and wild mood swings.
Gladstone is functioning as a mother, teacher, and caregiver, taking care of her terminally-ill mother. It is a daily battle to get her freshman to log into remote class and attempt to complete his work — and hers. She is seeking therapy for her child but firmly believes a return to school would have prevented all of this. Just attending for four days in November started to improve her child’s appetite.
School closures have had devastating impacts outside Virginia, as well. On Tucker Carlson Tonight, attorney Laura Grochocki appeared to share the stories she has collected from clients and her community. She represents Lisa Moore, whose son Travis Till committed suicide during the school closure orders from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Grochocki is receiving death threats for taking on this case through her small not-for-profit Remember America Action organization. In the interview, she says Moore’s story is just one of the many she has heard, and the foundation cannot take all of the cases her team would like to:
Grochocki said Remember America Action would have filed hundreds of lawsuits across the county if her team had the resources to do it. She said this case was a simple Equal Protection case because Governor Pritzker allowed professional and college teams to play but teen athletes have been crushed by the restrictions.
It is long past time for our national and local leaders to end this madness. Not all private schools have invested millions in new ventilation systems and plexiglass. Most of the studies have used commonsense hygiene measures and cloth masks with additional cleaning requirements. The need for more federal spending is a ridiculous excuse at this point.
The disadvantages that children, even in good schools and without learning disabilities, will have compared to their peers in places where schools are open is unconscionable at this point. There is no way to know how long the gap will exist or the long-term effects of the mental health crisis. It is high time someone pulls a Ronald Reagan with the air-traffic controllers and tells these teachers’ unions and associations their members can be replaced in short order or they will start docking their pay. The future of too many children depends on it.
