Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine (born Richard Levine), President Joe Biden’s pick for assistant secretary of health at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has long defended experimental transgender “treatments” for children. Levine, who identifies as transgender, has refused to say whether or not he has undergone medical interventions for his own gender identity, telling The Washington Post in 2016 that such “treatment” is a private matter.

Levine, a pediatrician who worked at Penn State Hersey Medical Center from 1993 to 2015 and who teaches pediatrics and psychology at Penn State College of Medicine, has given lectures on how to perform sex changes on children since at least 2012The National Pulse reported. In 2014, Levine argued that adults should give children latitude to choose their genders. He coached adults, “try not to force them one way or [the] other.”

In 2017, Levine recommended cross-sex hormones for children in their mid-teens. According to a video of his speech obtained by The National Pulse, Levine warned about the dangers of going through “the wrong puberty” and encouraged hormones to prevent the natural process of adolescent development.

“So what if you’re going through the wrong puberty? What if you’re a transgender young woman — meaning male to female — and now your voice is dropping, you’re getting bigger, you’re getting hair everyone, and you’re growing those [testicles]. And what if you’re a transgender young man, and now you have breast development you’re experiencing, it’s terrifying,” Levine argued.

He lamented that “basically, there was no treatment for individuals that were under 18” under earlier guidelines. By 2017, however, new pro-transgender guidelines approved the use of experimental drugs that supposedly “block” the onset of puberty and cross-sex hormones.

Levine noted that children’s hospitals still do not encourage these kinds of “treatments” for pre-pubertal children but that changes at the onset of puberty.

“The first phase at the young adolescent age is to give what they call a pubertal blocker, medicine to block the progression, low doses that you gradually increase,” Levine explained. The treatment supposedly ensures “that they never go through the wrong puberty. That way for a transgender woman, male to female, their voice doesn’t drop, they don’t have hair… for a transgender man, they don’t have breast development, they don’t have periods.”

“So you block puberty, and then you can, at the appropriate time, send them into puberty consistent with their gender identity,” Levine argued.

Research shows that there are significant risks with sex reassignment surgery, including heart conditions, increased cancer risk, and loss of bone density.

Some endocrinologists have warned about the negative effects of “puberty-blockers” and cross-sex hormones.

“I call it a development blocker — it’s actually causing a disease,” Dr. Michael Laidlaw, an independent private practice endocrinologist in Rocklin, Calif. who consults with Sutter Roseville Medical Center, told PJ Media. The disease in question is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. It occurs when the brain fails to send the right signal to the gonads to make the hormones necessary for development.

While endocrinologists — doctors who specialize in hormones and the endocrine system — are familiar with the disease and gladly treat it when a patient has been diagnosed, many of them are effectively causing their patients to contract the same disease in an attempt to affirm gender identity, Laidlaw said. “An endocrinologist might treat a condition where a female’s testosterone levels are going to be outside the normal range. We’ll treat that and we’re aware of metabolic problems. At the same time, an endocrinologist may be giving high levels of testosterone to a female to ‘transition’ her.”

Children with gender dysphoria (the condition of persistently identifying with the gender opposite one’s biological sex) are extremely unlikely to continue in that condition after puberty without medical interventions like “puberty-blockers.” Many realize they are not transgender, but instead gay or lesbian — like detransitioner Charlotte Evans, who launched a network for formerly transgender people.

There is no evidence that transgender surgery improves the mental health outcomes of gender dysphoric people. Men and women who formerly identified as transgender and underwent surgery have grown to reject transgender identity and lament the damage they did to their own bodies.

Last year, Britain’s High Court ruled that children under age 16 lack the ability to consent to “puberty-blocking” drugs and cross-sex hormones that have irreversible life-long effects. Children who undergo such “treatments” often persist in transgender identity and lose their ability to have children later in life, so some refer to cross-sex hormones and “puberty blockers” as “chemical castration.”

Many states are considering laws that would prevent doctors from prescribing these experimental treatments for minors. However, it seems extremely likely Biden and the Democrats in Congress will further these dangerous treatments in legislation and regulations connected to the Equality Act.

By nominating Levine for a key HHS post, Biden has sent a dangerous message about transgenderism in medicine. Medicine, of all fields, should follow the science of biological sex over unclear notions of transgender identity. After all, Levine himself acknowledged that the causes of gender identity — which he defined as “who you feel inside” — remain unclear.

“The hypothesis that I will give you is that the organic basis of gender identity is the expression of neurodevelopment of the brain, which is biological — as opposed to a competing hypothesis that this is somehow psychological or developmental,” Levine said in 2017.

By contrast, biological sex is male or female and it traces back to the “X” and “Y” chromosomes of DNA. Biological sex determines how human beings develop, from the womb to the tomb, and some medicines work well for women when they do not work well for men, and vice versa. These differences justify sex-segregated sports, sex-segregated private spaces, and different rules for men and women in different contexts.

Yet Biden, Levine, and the rest of the transgender establishment are consciously muddying the waters of well-established biological fact. This carries significant consequences for the field of medicine — and it bodes ill for gender-confused children.

Colorado MassResistance forces school administrators to reveal hidden middle school sex-ed curriculum to community

MassResistance has been helping parents face the relatively unhidden onslaught of “comprehensive sex ed” being pushed in their schools, openly brought in by leftist school boards and school administrators across the country.

But there’s another battle going on in school districts where the elected school boards do not buy into the comprehensive sex-ed agenda. Left-wing school administrators are determined to push their radical agendas. So they begin presenting explicit sex-ed materials (and other objectionable material) to younger students without any formal (or public) review. Parents and even school board members are purposefully kept in the dark about exactly what’s happening. Parents only find out bits and pieces of it by accident. The radical administrators believe that time and momentum are on their side – and they will eventually be able to openly make it a part of the curriculum.

When this sort of scheme happens, it needs to be exposed and publicly confronted immediately. But because of the deceptions, parents are at an even bigger disadvantage than usual. This is a battle that the Colorado chapter of MassResistance recently successfully took on!

Colorado School District 49 is a conservative area that includes eastern Colorado Springs and parts of the surrounding county. It is also where Cathy, our Colorado MassResistance leader, lives.

Parents of middle school children throughout the district had been upset and concerned about what they were hearing from their kids about the sex-ed classes. But the materials and curriculum were not being made available by the schools. All kinds of excuses were being used.

So last November, Cathy and the Colorado MassResistance team filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the middle school sex-ed materials – and also any Black Lives Matter, Critical Race Theory, or 1619 Project materials being used.

The school district replied that they did not have any Black Lives Matter or related material in any of their curricula. But they clearly did not want to release the sex-ed materials.  They insisted on a $120 fee to obtain copies of all the records, including the labor costs (four hours), to search for them and redact any personal information. But MassResistance insisted on paying nothing. Across the country, we've never had to pay a school district for that information.

For a number of weeks, the school district stonewalled. More than a month went by. Cathy filed the FOIA again and even offered to come in and make the photocopies herself. But they never even replied to that.

Our New Jersey Chapter leader, Abraham, offered to assist Cathy. He has worked with municipal law attorneys who often file lawsuits against derelict or recalcitrant school districts which refuse to comply with FOIA requests from the public. She got advice from him to help her move forward.

In Colorado, school boards must approve all school curricula, and there are also state guidelines. So there was a “sex-ed” curriculum outline for middle school students. But what is actually taught could easily go far beyond the vague set of goals set in the curriculum.

Taking it to the school board

At the next school board meeting, on January 14, 2021, Cathy spoke out boldly and asked the school board for help because she was facing considerable opposition in obtaining public records. "They are supposed to be public, are they not?" she asked them. "Why can’t the public have access to the sex-ed curriculum?"

Surprisingly, members of the school board also wondered why she was not getting the documents that she requested. They directed the administration to help her deal with the FOIA request. One of the school board members observed that many parents were probably curious about this, and even suggested that it be posted on the website.

One board member went even further. He said that the board should conduct a review of the “access path” for people who have an interest in what the schools are teaching. He told the other members:

It seems like a very legitimate public interest request that should be transparent and easy to do on a website. If it’s not that way, why isn’t it? And what can be done to make it that way? I know that the public has concerns about what’s being taught in our schools. Perhaps this could be an agenda item for a future meeting.

A few weeks after that school board meeting – and with a little more prodding from MassResistance – the school administration finally relented and gave her the information she requested … at no cost!

Fairly shocking – for middle school kids

We can see why the school administrators were hesitant to release the middle school sex-ed materials. For kids who are 9-12 years old, it’s pretty intense and graphic. It’s probably factually correct. But it’s not “age-appropriate” at all. The “factual information” would be way over their heads.

But far worse, like so much that the radical Left does to children, the graphic content appears meant to purposefully break down kids' natural modesty regarding sexual topics that they have at that age. It’s ideologically driven. How this affects children psychologically, the teachers simply don’t care.

Colorado MassResistance will make sure that this is presented to the public – and they can decide if this is what they really want their school board to push on middle school children.

Final reflection

Conservative school districts across the country are extremely vulnerable to this kind of infiltration from the radical Left. The next step is often the creation of phony (but well-funded) “astroturf” local left-wing groups to intimidate school board members and parents who disagree with these programs once they’re in the schools.  We’ve seen similar districts in other places where that has happened.

Thus, MassResistance works to step in and help parents and normal-thinking school board members stop this problem before it gets out of control. It looks like we’re on the road to success in Colorado School District 49!

Are Our Children Not Essential? Failing the children of New York.

For 150 years New York City Public Schools have remained continuously open and undaunted by all manner of calamities and natural disasters. Throughout our history from the Spanish Flu of 1918, the Great Depression, two World Wars, Cold War panic, civil unrest, the terrorist attacks on Sept 11, 2001, to Hurricane Sandy, the schools have always been open.

Not until 2020 has New York had a governor, a mayor, and a political class during a time of crisis, who have so miserably failed the children of New York. They have put our children in harm’s way physically, emotionally and academically.  We do not know the full scope of the consequences of these failures on the part of our political leadership, but the closing of our schools for 10 months and likely longer can be considered one of the biggest scandals in the history of our country. It has already taken an enormous toll on a generation of our children suffering in remote-learning environments, sequestered on endless video games. The laundry list of physical, emotional and academic maladies affecting our children due to remote-learning include mental illness, suicide, sickness, depression, anxiety, weight gain, isolation, 10 months of squandered learning, and lost opportunities for academic and athletic scholarships.

It has taken an enormous toll on working and middle-class parents and their extended family as well. The balancing act that parents must perform is work, their child’s education, and the financial stability of their families. These challenges that parents face are simply devastating. Never has the pressure been so unevenly placed upon the family unit than it has today by New York politicians. 

The public heaved a big sigh of relief when teachers were classified as essential and went to the front of the line for Phase 1 of the vaccinations. We all thought that within a short span of time, we would see the beginning of the reopening of our schools and the return to normalcy.

Teachers who were in their 20’s went to the head of the line, in front of seniors and people with comorbidities. But the public was ok with it because teachers are essential to the education and development of our greatest asset in America, our children.

The public was willing to let the teachers go to the front of the line and were hopeful to see the light at the end of the remote-learning tunnel. But the hope soon turned to despair as we were conned once again. The bait and switch charade pulled off on the public was from a minor faction of teachers and the union leadership who are still balking about going back into the classroom. While teachers are considered essential in receiving preferential treatment, our children are an afterthought.

For 150 years, New York’s political leadership understood the prime importance and significance of a good education, to ensure successful outcomes for future generations of our children. In 2020, the world changed. Elected officials abdicated their responsibilities in government and leadership roles regarding the education of our children, and left it in the hands of union leaders and a few selfish interests.

The political con job they played on parents and their kids was in promoting their misleading narrative that the classroom environment is unsafe. While the city’s schools closed for 10 months, Catholic and private schools have effectively remained open, and the teachers are safely at work doing in-person learning. The CDC never recommended schools close, and the CDC Director said schools are 'one of the safest places' for kids during the pandemic. Catholic schools are already starting up their after-school sports programs to begin on March 1st. Our local and state elected officials have failed our children, our parents, our communities, and our country, and there will be dire consequences for all.

The torturous road of the pandemic is indeed one filled with many heartbreaks.  Our schools are central to a thriving society today and for future generations to come.  We offer some simple guidance for the days that lay ahead.  Vaccinations for teachers and school staff started in January. By the middle of April all personnel of the city’s Department of Education, should have been vaccinated.  The mayor, City Council, and DOE should require all teachers and staff to be back at work by April 15th.  Citywide information portals should clearly communicate the planned reopening so that everyone understands NYC schools are in fact fully opened five days a week with after-school activities.  The consequences for those civil service employees who fail to report to work is the implementation of the Taylor Law to enforce back-to-work orders. This is above and beyond the realm of politics, union contracts, and special interests, and once and for all, decisive action must be taken.

What has been going on since March of last year has been near criminal. Never before in the history of our country, has a government and its political leadership so forsaken our most cherished resource in the present and for the future of our country. Our children are essential.

On December 22, 2020, a non-profit limited company based in Great Britain that calls itself the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) published a report entitled The Anti-Vaxx Playbook. It contains false and misleading information about the Fifth International Public Conference on Vaccination, which was sponsored by the 39-year old U.S. non-profit educational charity the National Vaccine Information Center, and held online in October 2020. Promotion of the CCDH report resulted in the spreading of fake news and misinformation by mainline media outlets in Great Britain and the U.S.
NVIC’s pay-for-view digital conference was transparently open to the public and featured presentations by 51 speakers from the U.S. and other countries discussing vaccine science, public health policy and law, informed consent and civil liberties. We have all seen the corrupt US Justice Department aggressively prosecute and imprison political opponents such as General Michael Flynn and former Texas Congressman Steve Stockman on the flimsiest of “crimes.” Meanwhile, left-wing figures such as Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden, who commit serious crimes remain untouched. The full truth is worse than most people are aware. Here is just one case we’re familiar with.

Philip Zodhiates is recognized as one of America’s best direct-mail professionals for conservative and Christian non-profits. His company, Response Unlimited, has sent out tens of millions of fundraising letters regarding the homosexual agenda and other anti-Christian movements. (Several years ago his company helped us!) Prior to and during the Obama administration his company sent out over 80 million fundraising letters targeting various suspect issues concerning Barack Obama, including his status as a “natural born citizen” and his ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, Zodhiates operated the Conservative Petitions website that generated impactful feedback and millions of email messages opposing leftist programs.

Zodhiates is a committed Christian who adopted six children from Central America and has generously donated money to, and volunteered for, Christian causes.

On Sept. 21, 2009, Zodhiates gave a young woman he knew from church, Lisa Miller, a car ride from Virginia (where they all lived) to New York. At the time, Miller was under emotional stress and was accompanied by her 7-year-old daughter Isabella.

That was the beginning of Zodhiates’ nightmare. The Obama Justice Dept. and major liberal and LGBT groups used the incident to manufacture an outlandish charge against him, leading to a tremendously expensive trial, and landing him in federal prison where he is today.

But the story began almost ten years earlier. It’s not surprising that a “gay rights” dispute is involved.

In December 2000, Lisa Miller and another young woman, Janet Jenkins, were in a lesbian relationship. They traveled from home in Virginia to Vermont to enter into a “civil union” which was not legally recognized in Virginia.

Lisa wanted to have a child and was artificially inseminated. Janet did not participate in that. In April 2002 when Isabella was born, Janet was not listed as a parent on the baby’s birth certificate. Since then, Jenkins also declined to adopt Isabella on at least two occasions, according to published documents.

In July 2002, the couple and child moved from Virginia to Vermont. But in September 2003, the relationship broke up and Lisa and Isabella moved back to Virginia. In November 2003, the domestic partnership was dissolved. After that, according to documents, Janet only saw Isabella once in 2003 and twice in 2004. Soon after, Lisa became a Christian. In 2004, a Virginia judge officially recognized Lisa as Isabella’s sole parent. Lisa decided not to allow Janet to have any further visits with Isabella. And according to published papers, Janet expressed little interest in Isabella.

Then the LGBT movement stepped in.

The ACLU along with the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund sought to make it a test case to establish that same-sex partners in civil unions could have “parental rights” over children – even if they were not biologically related and had never legally adopted them. In addition, according to documents, the Southern Poverty Law Center convinced Janet to allow them to make this case the precedent-setting attempt to nullify the Virginia Marriage Amendment and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.

Starting in 2007, these groups funded Janet Jenkins’ protracted custody battle over Isabella in the courts of Virginia and Vermont. A Vermont judge ordered that Janet should be allowed unsupervised overnight visits with Isabella, even though at that time she had not seen Isabella for 2½ years.

Lisa initially complied with these orders. But then she noticed that Isabella was acting very disturbingly after these visits. According to published documents, after one visit in 2007 (when Isabella was 5 years old) Lisa noted (published later in an affidavit):

Isabella has been crying at night asking me to promise that she doesn’t have to take a bath or shower with [Janet] … Since I picked her up on Sunday, Isabella has been exhibiting severe behaviors of stress, including pushing a comb against her stomach and telling me she is going to kill herself. She has been excessively and openly masturbating since she returned on Sunday and at one point tried to put a pen in her vagina.

When Lisa could see that Isabella was obviously being sexually abused during the visits with Janet, she declined to yield to the orders of the Vermont court. She continued trying to fight, but the massive legal force of the national groups was no match for Lisa’s meager resources.

Three licensed social workers in Virginia submitted affidavits stating that they believed Isabella was in danger with these visits, but that did not sway the courts. The Vermont court would not even allow those affidavits to be introduced as evidence.

The Virginia courts were persuaded to go along with the Vermont decision on visitation. In 2008, Lisa fought it all the way up to the Virginia Supreme Court. The court ruled in favor of continuing visitation rights for Janet!

Lisa still refused to comply. In 2009 a judge warned that if Lisa did not allow the visitations, he would transfer full custody of Isabella to Janet. In November 2009, the judge followed through with his threat and ordered Lisa to hand Isabella over to Janet.

But by then it was too late. Lisa and Isabella had left the country.

On Sept. 21, 2009, Lisa asked her friend from church, Philip Zodhiates, to drive her to Buffalo, NY. The next day Lisa and Isabella took a taxi across the border to Canada. They apparently flew from there to Central America, but their exact whereabouts are still unknown, according to reports.

At that point, the LGBT groups got the Obama Dept. of Justice (DOJ) to get involved, which they did with enthusiasm. They charged Zodhiates with International Parental Kidnapping and Conspiracy. The two-week jury trial was largely a sham. Among other things:

  • The DOJ got the jury trial moved from conservative Lynchburg, Virginia to liberal Buffalo, New York. But the supposed “kidnapping” took place in Virginia. Buffalo was simply the endpoint of the ride.
  • Lisa had full legal custody of Isabella, they had legal passports, and there were no travel restrictions.
  • Virginia's Defense of Marriage Amendment to its Constitution forbade the Virginia courts from recognizing the Vermont civil union, and Isabella's Virginia birth certificate lists Lisa as her only parent. Lisa lived in Virginia when Isabella was born.
  • The trial was largely on ad hominem characterization, not points of law. During the trial, the SPLC helped introduce “evidence” that Zodhiates was a horrible Christian bigot. But the judge refused to allow evidence of Zodhiates’ philanthropy and charitable work.
  • The jury never heard any evidence of the horrible sexual abuse regarding Isabella (or the affidavits from the social workers) which was the reason Lisa was escaping with her daughter. More important, fear of sexual abuse is a legal defense for alleged “parental kidnapping.” But Zodhiates’ lawyers purposefully chose not to tell the jury about that – an act of apparent legal malpractice which Zodhiates brought up in his appeal.

By any normal measure, Philip Zodhiates committed no crime. And certainly, by the normal standards of today’s legal system, he wouldn’t have been charged even if he had. But that’s not how things turned out.

The massive DOJ, SPLC, and LGBT legal team was too overwhelming, and Zodhiates’ lawyers were frankly unimpressive. The jury convicted Zodhiates.

The appeal was also shameful. The court rejected all of the problems with the trial that Zodhiates brought up. Petitions to the US Supreme Court were also rejected. In 2018 he was sentenced to three years in federal prison, where he sits now until the end of 2021. They would not even let him out early for Covid, even though thousands of other inmates were released.

Philip Zodhiates is also hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for legal fees and lost income. It is likely that the SPLC will bankroll a further lawsuit against him on behalf of Janet for “damages.”

In December 2019, Zodhiates filed a Petition for Pardon to President Trump. Since then, there were numerous letters and emails from the Trump administration. On Dec. 23, 2020, President Trump pardoned 15 people and commuted the sentences of 5 others. Then on Jan. 20, 2021, President Trump granted 73 pardons and commuted the sentences of an additional 70 people. Philip Zodhiates was not among them.

Many of these people had been convicted of drug trafficking, securities fraud, and similar crimes. A friend of a famous rapper got pardoned.

But no one who got pardoned, that we could determine, had committed a transgression against the LGBT movement. We have a disturbing feeling that President Trump – or his staff – did not want to offend that “constituency.” It’s a terrible shame, and bad for America.

“I would rather be governed by the first 2,000 people in the Boston telephone directory than by the 2,000 people on the faculty of Harvard University,” conservative icon William F. Buckley notoriously remarked. I have always thought of his oft-quoted quip as just that: a clever quip. But we have reached the point today where, given the choice Buckley was contemplating, I would vote for the 2,000 Average Joes over the 2,000 professors in a heartbeat. Even in a firmly Democratic-blue city like Boston, where the politics of ordinary citizens might resemble the professors’ political preferences far more than they would resemble mine, I wholeheartedly believe that those 2,000 random names would bring to the task of governance more common sense and more diversity of opinion. They would ultimately create a healthier, more vibrant and more livable society. And I strongly suspect that I am increasingly far from alone in that view.

Consider this apparent paradox: commanding, as they do, behemoth corporate entities, the media, the entertainment industry and the social media and tech hubs of Silicon Valley, the educated today arguably wield more power, influence and ubiquitous social control than they have ever wielded in American history, and yet they are also as scorned and distrusted as they have ever been. The prevalence of loony conspiracy theories on the political right notwithstanding, less educated people have their reasons for feeling conspired against and for distrusting those who are ostensibly their betters. They distrust the educated contingent’s claims to knowledge and expertise because they both consciously and instinctively know that such “experts” can no longer be trusted, that knowledge claims by the educated elites now routinely come packaged with liberal doses of barely concealed political prejudice. Experts are the ones who tell us that Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden will defeat Donald Trump in a blowout and that Democrats are set to pick up significant gains and take control of both houses of Congress in the 2020 election. Experts are the unelected backroom technocrats at Twitter and Google who take it upon themselves, despite having transparent political biases and no obvious qualifications for such roles, to intervene on the side of “Truth” in complex political and factual debates — inevitably citing as backup for their decisions some of their favorite sources, such as CNN or The Washington Post — and then proceed to label, take down, bury and censor competing claims and their conservatives or contrarian sources. Experts are the ones who issue confident pronouncements about Covid-19, only to issue inconsistent but equally confident pronouncements a few weeks or months later, the ones who tell us masks don’t help to protect healthy individuals only to completely reverse that guidance, the ones who command us that frequenting religious services, Trump rallies, restaurants, hair salons or family gatherings poses a mortal risk to our health while turning a blind eye to or even throwing full support behind massive #BLM protests or disregarding their own edicts and going unmasked into chic hair salons or large parties at expensive French restaurants. And, as I’ll have reason to discuss in more detail below, the kind of “expertise” that emanates from the mainstream media or the educational establishment is egregious in its political biases.

The reason for the problem is simple: the “educated” have become a stale, stagnant monoculture, a culture within which groupthink reigns, within which prejudice predominates, bad ideas go unchallenged and the worst ideas get insulated from scrutiny by strictly enforced taboos. In fact, the more “elite” the quality and quantity of the education people receive, the more herd-minded, prejudiced and intolerant of dissent they become. The danger of this predicament is not just one for political conservatives to bear; when a diversity of ideas is choked out by years of ideological indoctrination and enforced conformity when thought police patrol our public and private spaces and factual claims and ideas remain untested in the crucible of free and open debate, the resulting harm is borne by all. As I will explain in what follows, the ultimate issue springs from a tectonic shift in the complexion of our educational institutions. It will not be solved until those institutions are shaken to their very foundations and remade from the ground up.

Driving Polarization

In recent studies, education — the very thing that is supposed to open minds — has repeatedly been found, instead, to create closed-minded filter bubbles. A 2019 study by the polling and analytics firm PredictWise, retained by The Atlantic for the purpose of analyzing partisan prejudice, found that a high level of education was strongly correlated with political intolerance. The Atlantic reported as well on prior research from University of Pennsylvania professor Diana Mutz that had concluded that “white, highly educated people are relatively isolated from political diversity” and that “people who went to graduate school have the least amount of political disagreement in their lives.” Mutz’s explanation was that such people are less likely to talk with those who disagree with them.

A 2019 study by the “More in Common” project that analyzed the accuracy of people’s perceptions about their ideological opposites reached similar conclusions. Among its notable findings was that “the more educated a person is, the worse their Perception Gap” — their distorted view of and tendency to attribute extreme positions to those on the “other side.” But the “one critical exception” to this finding is that it applies only to Democrats, not Republicans:

[W]hile Republicans’ misperceptions of Democrats do not improve with higher levels of education, Democrats’ understanding of Republicans actually gets worse with every additional degree they earn. This effect is so strong that Democrats without a high school diploma are three times more accurate than those with a postgraduate degree.

Why does this differentiation exist? The “More in Common” research echoes Diana Mutz’s conclusion: “Highly educated Democrats are the most likely to say that ‘most of [their] friends’ share their political beliefs.” While the political composition of Republicans’ circle of acquaintances does not correlate with education, for Democrats the correlation is very direct: the more education they receive, the less likely they are to associate with anyone who disagrees with them. And there is good reason to believe that the composition of those with whom one pals around play a causal role in creating polarized groupthink: as research by Cass Sunstein, David Schkade and Reid Hastie has demonstrated, when people spend time discussing issues with like-minded others, their views predictably become more extreme.

Education’s Left Turn

Has education always cooked up an over-saturated brew bubbling over with an overpowering flavor of left ideological extremism? No. Pew Research Center findings from 2016 show a widening ideological gap between 1994 and 2015 among those who are more versus less educated. One metric examined the extent to which people’s views have become monolithically down-the-line liberal or conservative over the years. In 1994, one percent of those whose educations stopped after their high school graduation or even earlier leaned “consistently liberal,” while that number was four percent for those with “some college,” five percent for college graduates and seven percent for post-grads — a small upward progression but, all in all, not a massive difference. By 2015, however, the educational divide had become a gulf: five percent of those in the high-school-or-less category were consistently liberal in their views, but those numbers were 12% of those with some college, 24% of college graduates and 31% of post-grads. No similar pattern obtained for those who were “consistently conservative.” Both in 1994 and in 2015, the percentage of down-the-line conservatives hovered between six percent and 11 percent across all education categories, with no particular correlation with education to be found. The massive growth in the consistently liberal-minded over the course of these two decades had not come at the expense of conservatives, but rather, largely at the expense of those with less partisan and more “mixed” political views. While 53% of the “high school or less” crowd had held ideologically “mixed” views in 1994 and 48% held mixed views in 2015, among post-grads, that number had declined from 38% in 1994 to 24% in 2015. The conclusion: something has shifted dramatically over the course of the past 20 years to yield a direct correlation between how many years of education we have had and the extent to which we are immersed in an across-the-board liberal monoculture.

What changed is education itself. Beginning in the late 1980s — not long before the political opinions of the “educated” began to veer sharply to the left — education itself went from being a universally touted pathway to personal enlightenment and professional advancement to becoming a one-sided purveyor of political ideology. Belying any notion that university professors are inherently liberal-minded mainly because liberals are simply more curious and open-minded than their conservative brethren, not so very long ago, a fairly even split in political affiliations could still be found: in 1984, 39% of college faculty identified as left/liberal, while 34% identified as right/conservative, as reported in a 2005 paper from Stanley Rothman et al. A massive sea-change materialized over the course of the ensuing decade-and-a-half, according to the same paper: by 1999, 72% of faculty (and 81% among humanities faculty) identified as left/liberal, and 15% identified as conservative. By 2018, the situation had become still more dire, especially at the most elite universities. A comprehensive National Association of Scholars report from April 2018 headed by Mitchell Langbert of Brooklyn College, which tracked the political registrations of 8,688 tenure-track professors at top liberal arts colleges, found that “78.2 percent of the academic departments in [his] sample have either zero Republicans, or so few as to make no difference.” At the leftward end of the spectrum were the newly emerged ideological fields, such as gender studies and Africana studies, in which there was not “a single Republican with an exclusive appointment.” Again, casting serious doubt upon any notion that academics are overwhelmingly liberal simply because liberals are better suited to be eggheads, the political affiliations of university administrators are now similarly skewed far to the left. A 2018 survey of 900 college administrators by Samuel J. Abrams of Sarah Lawrence College revealed that 71% identified as liberal, and only 6% identified as conservative.

I have explored the causes of this seismic shift at length elsewhere, and suffice it to say here that the gradual replacement of a highly literate elite by a techno-financial elite dislodged the academic humanities from their once-vaunted perch in which they had served a pragmatic economic function (not a function that I believe true higher education should serve in any event, as I will make clear later). This change opened the door for a takeover of these departments by 60s radicals entering their 40s and 50s and positions of peak influence in the mid-to-late 1980s and 1990s. These original culture warriors succeeded in repurposing the humanities (dragging other university departments behind them to greater or lesser extents), deflecting them from the tasks of education, enlightenment and career prep and re-orienting them to the mission of social critique. The academic humanities, having been displaced from their prestigious mission of preparing a new generation for elite careers, found a new way of clawing back what they had lost by adopting a less practical but, in their eyes, still more critical mission: preparing a new generation of those who could claim elite status by virtue of their ability to stand in judgment over the rest of us. They spawned a new array of ideological victimology departments within academia and a market for diversity consultants and sensitivity training within corporate America and for hysterical and sensationalized media coverage of alleged oppression and persecution of “marginalized” and “vulnerable” minorities of every sort.

Distorted Academic Priorities

It is the lack of ideological diversity, not liberal bias per se, that presents the bigger challenge. I would not want universities or other institutions to be dominated by conservative groupthink any more than I want the current alternative. Thoroughgoing conservative bias at universities that are supposed to cultivate out-of-the-box thinking and groundbreaking research would, I assume, result in stagnation. But this is not the reality with which we are dealing. What we have is overwhelming liberal bias, not conservative bias. And liberal bias at institutions principally intended to instill a love of learning, an appreciation of a great tradition and the pursuit of lux et veritas creates its own specific problems.

A recent study from SUNY New Paltz’s Glenn Geher et al. — a study, it should be noted, that the authors had trouble publishing because of its politically explosive conclusions — building upon the prior work of prominent NYU psychologist Jonathan Haidt, found that the profound liberal bias in much of academia today is not without consequence. The researchers surveyed 177 academics in a variety of universities about their political orientations and personality characteristics as measured on the “Big Five” model of personality and then asked them to assign weights to five possible priorities: academic rigor, academic freedom, student emotional well-being, social justice and the advancement of knowledge. What they found is not surprising, but it is disturbing: liberal professors were significantly more likely to place a higher value on social justice and student emotional well-being than were their conservative colleagues, who tended to place a higher value on academic rigor and the advancement of knowledge. While many modern-day liberal academics — whether following in the tradition leading back to the prominent mid-20th century liberal Columbia sociologist C. Wright Mills or of the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci ­— believe in activist scholarship, few of us would disagree that if academic rigor and the advancement of knowledge are not at the very forefront of university professors’ priorities, the reputation and reliability of scholarship suffers, and mass skepticism of the politicized professoriate starts to seem justified. Still more concerning is that these researchers found that, of the academics surveyed, those who taught in schools of education — the places that teach the teachers to whom our kids are handed over for instruction — were the most likely to hold social justice and student emotional well-being in highest esteem. Indeed, we are seeing pre-college education today becoming both radicalized (with 79% of teachers leaning left, including 87% of high school teachers and 97% of English teachers, and becoming increasingly hostile to religion, so much so that they are one of the primary causes of its decline) and racialized (with school systems throughout the country beginning to teach The New York Times’ discreditedahistorical and hate-filled “1619 Project” as actual history).

Finally, the study found the Big-Five personality trait of “agreeableness” to be positively correlated with a preference for social justice and student emotional well-being and negatively correlated with academic rigor and advancement of knowledge. While the researchers’ proffered explanation for that result is that agreeable people are more likely to be “inclined to help students with issues that are not strictly academic,” my interpretation of their data would be different: agreeableness is known to be correlated with “conformity to social norms and expectations,” while disagreeable people are less concerned with what others think. Because liberal pro-social justice dogma is unquestionably an ascendant orthodoxy at universities, while dissent requires real intestinal fortitude, it makes total sense that those who are most agreeable are most likely to follow the herd. From this standpoint, therefore, the disturbing aspect of the role of agreeableness in these research results is that it signals that many academics are not so much joining a dominant consensus due to their own independently reasoned conclusions as they are, for fear of bucking the tide, reflexively hopping aboard a bandwagon — and, in the end, adding dead weight to what is fast becoming a sinking ship.

Sowing Ignorance and Stifling Debate

As I have already begun to suggest above, the impact of this comparatively rapid transformation in the core complexion of university staff upon the rest of society has been monumental and remains one of the great under-reported stories of the past few decades. Today, nearly three-quarters of students enrolled in U.S. News & World Report’s top ten colleges identify as liberal, while only 15% identify as conservative. Far from cultivating any spirit of open-minded inquiry of the sort one might expect to be the outcome of a university education, however — but consistent with the findings of the Glenn Geher et al. research profiled above — those top universities are leading the anti-intellectual crackdown against “disfavored” viewpoints. Here, according to FIRE’s survey of 20,000 students from a variety of American universities from earlier this year, are some of their attitudes concerning measures they think may appropriately be taken with respect to speakers with whom they disagree:

These numbers, as a whole, will be disturbing to anyone who values open-minded intellectual inquiry, but the numbers from top-ranked universities are especially alarming, showing a pronounced inability on the part of our purportedly “best and brightest” to abide opposing views.

More evidence concerning the unrepresentative and muddle-headed beliefs of the highly educated comes from the large 2018 “Hidden Tribes” demographic survey of political attitudes. The survey found that the left-most grouping — those who could be described as “Progressive Activists” — are the wealthiest and most educated subgroup in America, with 59% of this overwhelmingly white subgroup having completed college, as contrasted with a 29% average in the general population. Such people are far more likely to be politically engaged (73% as compared to a general-population average of 35%) and, for that reason, “have an outsized role in political debates.” Such people are also obsessed with what they perceive to be racism, sexism and other identity-based discrimination, and a whopping 69% of them (as compared to 24% of all Americans) are “ashamed to be American.”

Zach Goldberg’s 2019 discussion of data pertaining to such white liberals documents the fact that their leftward shift in beliefs is of relatively recent vintage but largely predates Trump’s Presidency and is, thus, not attributable to him or his policies. Among the highlights:

  • The percentage of these liberals who thought anti-black discrimination to be a “very serious” problem did not change much between 1996 (27%) and 2010 (25%), yet it shot up to 47% in 2015 and to 58% in 2016.
  • In 1995, 2000 and 2007, white liberals were evenly split among those who thought the criminal justice system fair to blacks and those who thought it biased against them. But by 2014, there was a 70%/20% gap in favor of those who thought the system biased.
  • 29% of white liberals perceived there to be “a great deal” of discrimination against immigrants in 2000; in 2013, that number had risen to 57%. The percentage of liberals feeling “very sympathetic” to illegal immigrants rose from 22% to 42% between 2006 and 2014.

Notably, in each of these cases ­— and especially in the cases of racial issues, with our first black President having still been in office through the end of 2016 — there was no obvious, relevant real-world change for the worse that would have spurred the very significant attitudinal change reflected in these numbers. It is the skewed content of their education, not rational considerations spurred by real-world changes, that is getting these highly educated liberals to alter their views.

At least four more of Goldberg’s conclusions with respect to these white liberals merit attention:

  • The attitudes of these liberals on race issues and immigration issues are significantly to the left of the attitudes of the very minorities they claim to represent.
  • These white liberals have recently developed a significant pro-outgroup bias, meaning that, by a significant margin, they prefer other racial groups to their own. Goldberg calls such an unusual bias “unprecedented,” and of course, no other group — blacks, Hispanics, Asians or non-liberal whites — exhibits such a bias.
  • Their “lack of awareness of how fast and far their attitudes have shifted fosters an illusion of conservative extremism,” whereas the data indicates that “[i]n reality, the conservatives of today are not all that different from the conservatives of years past.”
  • Consistent with the conclusion of the “Hidden Tribes” survey, Goldberg observes that while “[w]hite liberals make up 20-24% of the general population, … [they] exert an outsize political and cultural influence. They are more likely to consider themselves activists, are more active on social media, and, significantly, they are one of the most affluent groups in the country.”

That last point, in particular, merits further reflection. Rich, university-educated white liberals are precisely the kinds of people who rise to prominent and influential positions in what used to be called “media” but what, at this point (for much the same reasons professional wrestling is now commonly known as “sports entertainment”) should rightfully be called the “infotainment industry” — combining, as it does, the likes of formerly white-shoe, traditional media publications that have long since buttoned down and given themselves over to unvarnished advocacy, shameless scandal-sheet propagandists, social media “influencers,” Silicon Valley tech authoritarians, moralizing musicians, woke jocks and other species of shrill B-list celebrities.

“Educated” Infotainers

As The Atlantic’s Conor Friedersdorf has written, “The New York Times, New York, The Intercept, Vox, Slate, The New Republic, and other outlets are today less ideologically diverse in their staff and less tolerant of contentious challenges to the dominant viewpoint of college-educated progressives than they have been in the recent past.” Predictably, the role of the infotainment industry in broadcasting out to the masses the messages our politicized educators have taught them cannot be understated. The “Perception Gap” research of the “More in Common” project that I discussed above reaches this conclusion about the depressing role of the media in driving distorted perceptions of reality:

You might think that people who regularly read the news are more informed about their political opponents. In fact, the opposite is the case. We found that the more news people consumed, the larger their Perception Gap. People who said they read the news “most of the time” were nearly three times more distorted in their perceptions than those who said they read the news “only now and then.”

Zach Goldberg reaches similar conclusions in an August 2020 article fittingly entitled “How the Media Led the Great Racial Awakening,” in which he presents a treasure trove of data convincingly demonstrating that, in a word, the media was in the cockpit of our careening craft. In a few short years, beginning roughly around 2010 (thus, again, well before Trump appeared on the national stage as anything other than a vulgar television personality), the media — with The New York Times leading the charge — began to racialize America, vastly expanding its coverage of race and racism, immeasurably expanding its definition of what counted as “racism” or “white supremacy” to encompass anything and everything that, regardless of the reason, did not produce total and utter demographically proportionate equality and, in the end, getting us all to believe, regressively, that “‘color’ is the defining attribute of other human beings.” The opinions of these infotainment industry thought leaders were quickly adopted by their liberal readers, viewers, listeners and followers, leading, finally, in the summer of 2020, to nationwide protesting, looting and rioting due to the mass adoption of a wildly delusional belief that black people are dying every day at the hands of racist white killer cops — the truth, as FBI data and numerous studies have shown, being that cops do not kill unarmed blacks at higher rates than the crime data would predict and, more importantly, that in all of 2019 (the last year for which there is full data on record), 14 unarmed black people, as well as 25 unarmed white people, were killed by police, as compared, for the sake of maintaining perspective, to 20 (presumably unarmed) people killed by a lightning strike in the same year. As Goldberg documents, the black victims of police shootings generated huge waves of sensationalized media coverage, while the white victims were largely met with the chirping of crickets. What the infotainment industry is doing to our perceptions of race and racism, in other words, might best be characterized as a never-ending, omnipresent Willie Horton ad driving us into irrational paroxysms of racialized mass hysteria.

What emerges from the data I have advanced thus far is a picture in which a massive leftward lurch in the composition of university faculty and administrators beginning in the late 1980s and continuing on through the ’90s and ’00s created, some years down the road, a massive leftward lurch among infotainment industry elites, leading together, in turn, to a massive leftward lurch among the “educated” public as a whole and resulting, finally, in the formation of a fissure between the educated and their less-educated peers. This is why the main axis along which pro-Trump versus pro-Biden voters were divided in 2020 is not the media’s favorite bugaboo of race, but rather, education. Trump’s many obvious faults aside, we should not mistake the joyful tears of the talking heads on our screens and the delighted yelps of urban bobos, yuppies and hipsters in the streets on that Saturday when the media called the election for Joe Biden for anything other than what it was: the relieved cry of the educated elites that the most organized mass propaganda campaign this side of Stalin had succeeded in toppling the crude, unhinged, nationalist-populist championed by the deplorable underclass and installing the easily puppeted, doddering career politician favored by the wealthy, the powerful and the educated. For this reason, as well, the Biden administration is expected to be chock-full of college faculty, a straightforward case of dancing with the ones that bring you to the dance.

Credential Inflation

So education today, and especially elite higher education, is systematically polarizing us, driving misperceptions of the “other” side, fomenting an escalating race war and skewing the composition of the electorate, all while replacing the pursuit of knowledge with politicized groupthink. But is it at least doing a good job of discharging its practical function? Are nominally great universities at least giving us our money’s worth in educating a highly qualified workforce? Not exactly. A recent study demonstrated that when 28,339 graduates from 294 universities — representing universities around the world ranging from the top 50 to 10,000 spots down — were evaluated on various facets of their job performance, for every 1,000 spots lower on the university rankings, the graduates exhibited a performance decline of a measly 1.9%. The starting salaries these students commanded, however, exhibited a far wider gap: while graduates of universities at the top of the rankings had average starting salaries in the high $80,000s or low $90,000 bestowed upon them, graduates 1,000 spots down got average starting salaries in the high $40,000s or low $50,000s, a difference of about 45%. The moral of the story for employers: save your money, and hire the kid from the university a thousand spots down on the list, the one who’ll do almost as good a job but without the political headache and petulant demands the top-tier grad is likely to bring to the job. The moral of the story for the rest of us: highly ranked universities might be paying off financially for some of their graduates (assuming they monetize their credentials rather than pursuing their passions), but they’re not paying off for society as a whole.

What such universities may be producing, in lieu of better qualifications, is what is known as “credential inflation” (a type of phenomenon likely to be especially prevalent during a pandemic-driven recession), in which jobs that never used to — and still technically don’t — require a college education go to college graduates, while jobs that require no more than a college degree go to graduates of the more elite colleges. What happens when we are all reflexively told to go to college is mass underemployment, with, as of September 2020, over half of college graduates and just under half of recent college graduates underemployed, holding down jobs that do not require a college degree. In fact, as a recent Hechinger Report article concludes, college grads could often have gotten similar or higher salaries (without incurring the national average of $28,950 in four-year college loan debt) had they pursued lucrative professional or associate’s degrees in fields such as nursing, construction management or dental hygiene.

Social Instability

What universities may also be producing today is social unrest, not only by miseducating and radicalizing the public, as I have described at length above, but also by contributing to what the U. Conn. scientist and cultural evolution researcher Peter Turchin has dubbed “elite overproduction,” the phenomenon that occurs when a society manufactures many individuals who would appear to have some claim to elite status — such as by virtue of their educational credentials — without there being enough actual elite job slots to go around to satisfy their inflated self-conceptions. In such circumstances, Turchin argues, history repeatedly shows that these individuals become troublemaking malcontents. They begin to comprise a “counter-elite” that lays the groundwork for revolution by fulminating against their own society, its ruling class and the legitimacy of its governing principles, e.g., against the very notion of American meritocracy. Revolutions, in this empirically driven conception, are not made by Marx’s romanticized immiserated proletarians having reached their breaking point, but rather, by aspiring status-seekers and would-be intellectuals stymied by structural roadblocks that prevent their advancement through acceptable, conventional routes. Consistent with Turchin’s thesis, terrorism — the ultimate outlet for malcontents — is also normally not driven by ignorance or poverty, but rather, by a “lack of adequate employment opportunities for educated individuals.”

That social instability is generally summoned up by alienated elements within the “thinking classes” is something prophetic writers like Dostoevsky understood some time ago: his “commoners” tend to be preternaturally virtuous or preternaturally vicious, but it is various disaffected thinkers — students and the like — who tend to become possessed by dangerous ideas. As Adam Garfinkle has written in an article on the decline of deep literacy published in National Affairs earlier this year, superficial education not vivified by a habit of lifelong learning and deep reading, largely serves to make people ideal victims of and disseminators of propaganda. Such “scantily educated” individuals, emboldened by the official sanction of university credentials and enabled by social media, “contribute scantily supported opinions about things they don’t really understand, validating the old saw that a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing” and bringing into being the kind of “distributed mob … the ancient Greeks warned against.” I would add to Garfinkle’s diagnosis just one more proviso: with education configured as it currently is, more does not equal better. In fact, more education will only make the problem worse, adding more dug-in groupthink, more unwarranted self-assurance and more specialized steeping masking deep ignorance.

For all these reasons, fewer people going to college — and especially to high-price-tag, uber-politicized elite colleges — today is a win-win-win, a win for employers who can pay significantly lower salaries without a comparable drop-off in performance quality, a win, paradoxically, for employees, provided they make strategic choices to go into in-demand fields that pay almost as much as or even more than they would have made without incurring crushing debt in the process and a win for society as a whole, which will be saved much of the polarization, systematically skewed politics and social instability associated with contemporary education.

A Higher Calling

But what of education for its own sake? After all, don’t we want people to aspire to the enlightenment that knowledge itself confers? Yes, absolutely. I am far from being one of those philistine conservatives who value only that which can be monetized. I believe firmly that all of us who are truly willing and able to study “the best which has been thought and said” should have that opportunity … but that is certainly not what universities are teaching today. Contemporary universities are little more than social clubs and credentialing degree mills where kids get to stave off the responsibilities of adulthood for four years while insulating themselves (unless they happen to be conservative) from true challenges and discomforts and learning, repeatedly, the pat PBS children’s moral that everyone (except, perhaps, white male heterosexuals) is great exactly as they already are.

There is, moreover, no reason for those intent not on the pursuit of knowledge but on lucrative careers as doctors, lawyers, financiers and techies to waste four unproductive, costly years suffering through classes in elite universities in which they will get little more than some inadequately considered radical politics and an admission ticket into the intolerant American intelligentsia. Just like nurses, auto mechanics or electricians, such careerists should go straight from high school into their professional training schools and not be invited to delude themselves into believing that they are informed aristocrats merely by virtue of their elite credentials and resulting compensation packages. It is only when we take the ruse of career prep out of higher education and reserve such education for those few who want to be working their way, line by line, through the glories of Shakespeare or musing about the wildest implications of quantum mechanics that we will have any chance of purging the universities of the unintellectual students not up to the task and the anti-intellectual academics who thrive by giving those very students the sour-grapes license they need to reject our finest traditions.

To say this another way, the bottom-line problem is that when we made the mistake of trying to open higher education to everyone, we opened the campus gates to people who neither had any interest in learning “the best which has been thought and said,” nor the ability to breathe that rarefied air. We then found ourselves in the position of facing and acceding to strident calls of elitism, racism and other -isms and began to dumb our education down to meet people where they were. A wise observation from T.S. Eliot’s mid-20th-century compendium of essays published as Notes Toward the Definition of Culture puts this point better than I could:

[W]hether education can foster and improve culture or not, it can surely adulterate and degrade it. For there is no doubt that in our headlong rush to educate everybody, we are lowering our standards, and more and more abandoning the study of those subjects by which the essentials of our culture — of that part of it which is transmissible by education — are transmitted; destroying our ancient edifices to make ready the ground upon which the barbarian nomads of the future will encamp in their mechanised caravans.

Eliot’s essay also contains this absolutely critical observation: “A high average of general education is perhaps less necessary for a civil society than is a respect for learning.” While I will leave it to those more qualified for that task to debate whether or not a trickle-down approach works in the realm of economics, in the realm of culture and education, such an approach is exactly what we need. A society in which higher education is reserved for the few who actually crave the precious gifts it confers is one in which higher learning remains an appropriately lofty and difficult arcana unadulterated by the need to condescend to a mass audience. In such a society, elite educated mandarins and, more importantly, the knowledge they command are held in high esteem because they serve as its protectors, keeping it sacrosanct. Then knowledge retains its luminescence, a polestar towards which would-be-initiates will aspire and a guiding light towards which even their less capable brethren among the masses will incline. Lit up by the glow at the top, an entire society is haloed over.

When, instead, the seal is broken, when higher education is instrumentalized in the service of financial rewards or bastardized to avoid bruising the fragile egos of second-rate students, then sacred syllables and profound mysteries are de-solemnized and set adrift in a generalized sea of indifference in which every crown jewel will be lost and every drop of holy water will be diluted. The more open to the barbarian hordes are the gates of our ivory towers, the more closed will remain the minds of those who scramble in their unimpeded headlong rush to the top. When the unreconstructed barbarian resurfaces at the tower’s very apogee and peers down from his newfound perch upon those he now thinks are his inferiors, he may be shocked to find that, far from inspiring the kind of reverence he had imagined came with the role, he will see gazing up from below slightly more ungroomed and unpolished — though also less haughty and more grounded — versions of himself, a sea of expressions betraying skepticism of his claims to expertise and mirroring his own scorn. And when he flings boulders down in disgust to crush dissent, he will find them hurled unceremoniously right back at him.

 

Mass. Lawmakers Override Veto of Abortion Bill, Allow 16-Year-Olds to Kill Unborn Without Parental Consent

BOSTON — Lawmakers in Massachusetts have voted to override Gov. Charlie Baker’s veto of a bill that allows 16 and 17-year-olds to obtain an abortion without their parents’ consent or knowledge. The legislation, known as the ROE Act, also essentially allows abortion up to birth for “fatal fetal anomalies.”

The House of Representatives obtained the two-thirds majority (107-46) needed to override the veto on Monday, followed by a 32-8 vote from the Senate on Tuesday.

“Today, the Commonwealth reestablished itself as a national leader in health care by removing political barriers to abortion and becoming the first state to legislatively ease burdensome restrictions on young people’s access to care,” the ROE Act Coalition remarked in a statement, according to local television station WCVB.

“The legislature’s leadership means no Bay State family who receives a devastating diagnosis later in pregnancy will ever be forced to fly across the country to access compassionate care and no 16- or 17-year-old will ever be forced to navigate the court system to access the health care they need.”

As previously reported, last month, lawmakers in Massachusetts passed an amendment attached to a budget bill that would essentially allow abortion up to birth for “fatal fetal anomalies” and lower the age of parental consent from under 18 to under 16.

According to text on the legislature website, the amendment permits abortion after 24 weeks when “in the best medical judgment of the physician, an abortion is warranted because of a lethal fetal anomaly that is incompatible with sustained life outside the uterus.”

It permits nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and midwives to perform abortions and states that abortive mothers under 16 must obtain consent from one parent (or can go to the courts if that is not possible), and “in deciding whether to grant such consent, a patient’s parent shall consider only the patient’s best interests.” Those 16 and up will not be required to obtain parental permission.

The amendment passed in the Massachusetts House of Representatives on Nov. 12 by a vote of 108-49, followed by a 33-7 vote in the Senate on Nov. 18.

Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican who supports the so-called “right to abortion,” said that he was uncomfortable with the provisions that allowed 16-year-olds to obtain an abortion without parental consent and allowed abortion after 24 weeks in some cases. He presented his own version of the legislation that would eliminate those sections.

Both houses of the legislature rejected Baker’s changes and voted to retain the original language.

“Getting ready to vote down @MassGovernor amendment that will deny 16-year-olds the right to independently choose an #abortion,” tweeted lawmaker Marjorie Decker, D-Cambridge. “Let’s be clear; there is no age on prenatal care for young women girls needing #parentalconsent.”

Baker then vetoed the bill as written, and the legislature consequently sought to override his veto and force the matter into law.

“Pregnant people who once faced near-insurmountable barriers accessing abortion care can now seize the right to control their own bodies,” Senate President Emerita Harriette Chandler remarked on Twitter on Tuesday. “I am so proud of the policies included in the #ROEAct and of the (Massachusetts Senate) for our commitment to reproductive freedom.”

The Massachusetts Family Institute, led by president Andrew Beckwith, lamented the passage of the bill, reminding followers that the matter is not simply political; it is spiritual at its root.

“I have to remind myself that ‘we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places,'” he wrote. “For, surely, the celebrated, legally sanctioned murder of our children is a great wickedness promoted, ultimately, by ‘the rulers of the darkness of this world.'”

As previously reported, in early America, Christians were staunchly against abortion for any reason, seeing the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16-17) and the discontinuance of a life created and given by God as murder.

In his 1869 sermon entitled “Ante-Natal Infanticide,” E. Frank Howe, the pastor of the Congregational Church of Terre Haute, Indiana, said, “[I]t makes no matter that the victim cannot stretch out its hands in defense. … It matters not that it … can utter no cry of pain or reproach. The sacred gift of human life is taken — is deliberately taken, and this constitutes the crime, and that crime is murder.”

He lamented that “men and women place their own ease and pleasure above God’s law” and that “public opinion is so corrupted there is no voice of reproach,” forthrightly declaring, “Put what face upon it the community will disguise it under whatever name you please, you can make no more or less of it than simple murder.”

In 1896, Dr. William McCollom lamented that even in his day, mothers would “unblushingly apply to the physician and to the druggist for medicine to abort [their] pregnancy.”

“Great ignorance of the criminality of the practice is manifested by educated women, but it is not ignorance alone but a downright lack of moral sense as well, which greatly needs educating,” he said, urging doctors to speak out.

McCollom expressed concern that pastors were seemingly not lifting their voice on the issue of abortion as he saw that the practice was both prevalent among the unsaved and “on the increase among professed Christian women.”

“Let us do our duty, if our spiritual advisors neglect to do this, in denouncing this common crime and great sin,” he wrote in addressing his fellow physicians.

“The field for missionary work is a large one and should be faithfully worked, both by the conscientious physician and the Protestant Christian clergy, who perhaps fully understand the enormity of the sin if they do not know how prevalent it is,” McCollom said. “It is not a pleasant subject to discuss before a mixed audience. Young women could be reached, instructed and warned by a properly published circular or tract sent to them by Christian organizations at intervals.”

Scripture, in addition to speaking on the value of the unborn, also repeatedly addresses the precursor sin of fornication, teaching in 1 Corinthians 6:13, “Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 exhorts, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication, that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor — not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God.”

Verses 7-8 add, “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man but God, who hath also given unto us His Holy Spirit.”

After agreeing last year to hear the case, the European Court of Human Rights has now decided to dismiss a legal challenge filed by a Christian family whose children were seized by Norwegian child welfare agents after the school principal contacted authorities to express concern over the manner in which the children were being raised, including that they were sometimes spanked.

While the court concluded that Marius and Ruth Bodnariu had not availed themselves of possible localized means to obtain vindication after their children were returned, the family says that was not a feasible option for them.

“The decision is a blow to the family, who argued before the European Court of Human Rights that any further remedies in Norway were illusory at best,” Christian Concern outlined in a blog post on Thursday.

“They would not risk further punishment and separation of the family by going back into the system that had so ill-treated them, especially after all of the international media attention the case had garnered. Asking them to go back into the proverbial lion’s den would have been cruel, and something Ruth and Marius Bodnariu would never put their children through,” it explained.

As previously reported, in 2015, Norway’s child welfare agency, Barnevernet, seized the Bodnariu’s two daughters, two sons and then-baby Ezekiel after being informed of concerns about the home life and upbringing of the children.

The two eldest children were reportedly removed from school without their parents' knowledge, and Barnevernet representatives soon also arrived with police at the Bodnariu home, where they seized the remaining children, minus the baby. The organization returned the following day and removed the infant as well when attempts by the Bodnarius to resolve the matter were not successful.

The matter began when the principal of Vevring School contacted the Department of Culture to outline the content of two conversations with the couple’s daughters, which included being occasionally spanked.

The letter was forwarded to Barnevernet, which reached out to the principal. According to reports, the principal also expressed concern that the family’s religious beliefs might stunt the girls’ development — but only requested counseling for the children as she did not believe the Bodnarius were abusive.

[T]he principal stressed that she was only requesting the Barnevernet’s counseling services, as the girls are intelligent and creative, and that she, the principal, doesn’t believe that the girls are being physically abused at home,” Daniel Bodnariu, Marius’ brother, said in a statement in 2016.

“This same principal had previously scolded and categorically forbid one of the Bodnariu girls from singing as a result of the girl singing a Christian song to her schoolmates,” he advised.

But despite the principal’s request for counseling only, the Barnevernet instead pursued proceedings against the parents, alleging that they had abused the children.

“The Barnevernet ordered extensive medical examination of the children, as there was no evidence to support the allegations of physical abuse, but the medical reports emphasized that there was no sign of physical or mental abuse,” Bodnariu stated.

After interviewing the couple’s two daughters, who reportedly conjured up information about their family life — such as that they would be punished if they did not know the Bible from memory, Barnevernet returned and took the rest of the children into government custody, dividing them up into three different foster homes.

In realizing that the seizure was unjust, the matter resulted in protests against Barnevernet around the world, including in Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom and Poland.

Seven months later, in June 2016, the children were returned to their family. The Bodnarius then fled Norway to find freedom in Marius’ homeland of Romania, and Mrs. Bodnariu gave birth to a sixth child.

Attorneys for the family soon filed a complaint before the European Court of Human Rights, stating that Norwegian officials had violated Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects the right to privacy within a family.

While the court originally agreed to hear the case, it has now found the matter to be inadmissible as it believes the situation should have first been addressed in Norway.

Roger Kiska, an attorney with the Christian Legal Centre, said in a video released about the case on Friday that the incident reflects a broken welfare system that could adversely impact any family.

“I think what’s important about this case is that you have a loving family, a Christian family, a gentle family, who has been torn apart by a broken system filled with prejudices, lack of due process [and] a guilty until proven innocent mentality,” he stated.

“I think what they represent is every family out there, that this can happen to anyone.”

As previously reported, Barnevernet also took a young child into custody in 2018 as his parents had been homeschooling him for a time since he had been bullied at school. Leif and Terese Kristiansen had planned on sending their son back to school once they found a better location for him to attend.

According to Ray Skorstad, founder of the legal assistance group Barnets Beste, the government took Kai because they believed the child needed to be in school for “socialization purposes” and thought that the family was “avoiding them.” Following intervention from the Homeschooling Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), the boy was allowed to return home with his parents.

Parents have no idea that books like this - for teachers, counselors, and administrators - are showing up in elementary schools across the country!

Most people don’t realize how the “transgender” propaganda machine has been targeting vulnerable elementary school children across the country – and how helpless parents feel against it. But MassResistance is helping families fight back and stop it!

Children are fed these “gender” lies through the media, school programs, social media, children’s books and magazines, and programs like “Drag Queen Story Hour” events in libraries. And radicalized school counselors and staff have become a big part of the problem. They support children’s descent into these perversions and keep that information from parents.

The brainwashing starts early in the public schools. This extremely seductive and harmful book is in school libraries and classrooms across the U.S.! It glamorizes the story of a boy who eventually had medical interventions and surgeries to “become” a girl.

Last month we got a call from Janice, a new MassResistance activist in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She was extremely upset and asked for our help.

Janice’s daughter, Ashley, has two daughters. One girl is in high school and the other is in elementary school. The father was tragically killed three years ago while serving in the US Army in Afghanistan. As you can imagine, that has affected the girls very much, and they have gone through a lot of emotional stress.

Coeur d’Alene is a relatively conservative city located in northern Idaho (about 30 miles east of Spokane, WA). Parents have tended to trust the local schools – which unfortunately is a mistake.

On November 17, the younger daughter (who turned 11 only a month before) came home from school and announced to her mother and grandmother, “I’m a transsexual.”

A few months earlier, Janice had talked to the elementary school counselor about her concerns that her granddaughter had said she’d been “looking at things online” and seemed to be going through a phase of thinking she would like to be a boy. But Janice was hoping for help from the counselor, not further harm!

Janice took her granddaughter aside to ask her about her “decision.” The girl said her elementary school teacher and school counselor both completely support her decision. She insisted that it’s “who she is.” She said they both told her, "I will accept you for who you are."

She added, "My counselor gave me tips on how to tell you. She said we can practice on how to tell your parents. Maybe you can bring them in here and we can both tell them. If they say this, I can say that. Hopefully, the parents will think it's good.“

The girl gave an example: “My mother’s religious. If she says ‘it's a sin’, then I can say, ‘Well, you sin every day.’ "

The girl was also given the phone numbers of local LGBT support groups. "Just in case I need it," she told Janice.

Janice asked her, “Did any of them say, you're 11 and maybe you should explore other options before saying you’re transgender?” No, they didn’t, she said.

At that point, the girl became very emotional and upset, and began crying because her mother and grandmother would not accept her for “who she really is.” This is a very chilling thing for any parent to hear from an 11-year old daughter. And it was especially infuriating that this criminal confusion was being pushed on a minor child by adults in the public school.

Confronting the school counselor

The first thing MassResistance told the Janice was to get that counselor on the phone immediately. Get all the information you can, then tell her in very strong terms never to talk to your granddaughter again. Be firm and unafraid. So she did just that. School officials are generally very skilled at intimidating parents – but not this time!

Still, it was a very shocking call. During the call, the elementary school counselor admitted that her discussions with the girl had been going on for a while, and that she had been coaching the girl as to when and how to properly tell her parents about the new identity.

She also admitted that she told the girl she supported her “decision” – even though the girl is only 11 years old – and did not tell the girl that there was anything wrong with her being “transsexual” or offer an alternative point of view. Instead, she said that it was more important for the girl to feel “safe.” This was probably the most chilling part of the phone call:

JANICE: So, your position is that you’re letting a girl who just turned 11 years old take the lead on something that she is being told, that she’s transsexual? You understand she just turned 11, right?

COUNSELOR: I just can’t, professionally or personally, it’s not my role to have judgment on that, to say either “Yes, she is”, or “Yes, she isn’t.” I don’t know. My role is to simply be there for her and help her to feel comfortable at school.

The counselor also admitted to Janice that the principal and other school officials had known about this but purposefully not told the family. She said that the girl had told her teacher some time ago that she wanted to be addressed as a boy, with a male name and male pronouns. The teacher and counselor asked the principal how to proceed. Assuming that the mother would probably not agree, the principal consulted the school district’s attorney. The attorney said that the school could not call the girl by a boy’s name without informing the parent. So the decision was made by all four of them not to call the girl by a boy’s name – so they could avoid informing the girl’s family of what was happening. Furthermore, the relationship was to be “private” so that the counselor could be a “safe space” for the girl – “safe” from her mother and grandmother!

Probably most bizarre was this exchange – it shows what parents are really up against:

JANICE: And you do understand at 11 her brain isn’t even developed enough to make rational decisions? This is what the science says about it. …  And now she’s here at home, telling me “My school accepts it. It must be OK for me.”

COUNSELOR: I get it, and that’s hard. Some people know [they are transsexual] at 11. Some people know and make that decision at 11. Some people don’t.

JANICE: Back up. You believe that an 11-year-old child, that some people know at 11 years old, when their brains aren’t developed, and we just talked about the scientific evidence of that. And you believe at 11 years old some people do know that [they are transsexual]?

COUNSELOR: From what I’ve read, yes, people do know that.

It was all incredibly shocking and absurd. Janice didn’t hold back: She told the counselor not to ever have any further contact with her granddaughter. (The girl’s mom, Ashley, also later contacted the counselor and said the same thing.) The counselor reluctantly agreed.

But that agreement didn’t hold for long. A few days later, the counselor and the girl were messaging each other on social media. Among other things, the counselor called the girl “Al” – a boy’s name – and said she was worried about her being at home with her family.

She told the girl, "If you feel unsafe at home, or are thinking of hurting or killing yourself, there are people I can call to make sure you are safe. Please let me know if this is the case." (Very disturbing: The counselor is putting suicidal ideas into the girl’s head!)

When Ashley found these social media posts, she was livid – and felt even more violated. She sent this email to the counselor, pulling no punches:

She is doing fine and we are doing the very best that we can. This "turmoil" was caused when a confused little girl went to a trusted adult and was encouraged to believe that she had a mental illness (body dysphoria).

This trusted adult (you) did nothing but encourage my daughter to believe this lie and THAT has caused her more pain.

I am very disappointed in myself for trusting you with the care of my little girl. We have a big job ahead of us trying to undo the hurt that you have done. It will be a lot easier to do if you would respect my wishes and not contact my daughter any further.

  • They are flooding the school officials with calls and emails demanding that the counselor (and the principal) be fired. Yes – fired. We’re treating this as serious as it actually is!
  • They are demanding that the School Board implement a policy requiring the schools to inform parents immediately on any LGBT issues regarding their children.So far, the School Board has reacted by using legalisms and double-talk to dodge the issue – which is not surprising. Here’s the letter our Organization Director, Arthur Schaper, received from them on Nov. 30. We’re used to this sort of non-action. The fight is just beginning!
  • We have begun working with a member of the Idaho Legislature on introducing a bill in the upcoming session to counter the promotion and acceptance of LGBT behaviors in the schools, in addition to banning counselors from withholding information from parents. It would also weaken the power of the public sector teachers unions in the promotion of LGBT themes and causes in schools.
  • In addition, the mother has decided that she will remove the girl from the public school and put her in a private Christian school, which we’ve suggested, for her safety and emotional well-being.

We are continuing this fight!

Final thoughts

These horrible things aren’t just happening in northern Idaho. It’s happening in elementary schools across the country (and in other countries), even in the most seemingly conservative places. Unfortunately, virtually no other conservative groups do what we do. Nobody else treats this like a war instead of a “disagreement.” It’s not enough to write analyses or reports. Our approach is vitally necessary!

The conservative movement likes to complain about this, but they’re very uncomfortable doing anything about it. As you know, we were banned from CPAC a few years ago because we publicly stated that it was necessary to be aggressive in stopping the transgender agenda in elementary schools. That statement angered the LGBT group “Log Cabin Republicans” which donates to CPAC, so they caved in. But we won’t let this go!

German Mayor Erik Lierenfeld released a video PSA (public service announcement) instructing children to snitch on those who dare to question the science behind wearing masks. The school children were told to call police if they encounter anyone who denies the effectiveness of masks.

The Mayor of Dormagen warned there will be “crazy” people who try and convince people that masks are not necessary but Germans must stand “united” against them.

Questioning the government and their arbitrary and unscientific coronavirus measures is no longer accepted in Chancellor Angela’s Merkel’s Germany. One must listen to the state, and any questioning of policy is considered criminal.

This is not the first time in the country’s history they used children to persecute and destroy dissenters. The East German ministry for State Security, Stasi, recruited school-age informers to destroy anyone who threatened their power and control. Stasi used child spies to betray their family, friends and acquaintances which led to “thought criminals” being imprisoned, tortured or even murdered. 

In normal left-wing fashion, when parents criticized Mayor Lierenfeld’s he deployed a typical leftist deflection strategy dubbed the “Luke O’Brien Tactic“: Claiming to receive death threats after being called out for ridiculous actions.

A Virginia school board voted this week to change the names of two schools because their namesakes were slave owners — even though one of them was America’s third president and the other was another Founding Father.

Falls Church City Public Schools will rename Thomas Jefferson Elementary School and George Mason High School following a unanimous vote to approve the measure Wednesday.

“The Board took seriously the viewpoints and concerns raised by many students, parents, staff, and community members,” said School Board Chair Greg Anderson.  

Prior to the vote, the school board conducted a survey to gauge the public’s interest in changing the 
names of the schools. Only 26 percent of the nearly 3,500 parents, students, and staff members surveyed 
supported renaming the George Mason school, and only 23 percent supported renaming the Thomas Jefferson 
Elementary. By contrast, 56 percent opposed renaming both of them.

Despite this fact, Anderson said the change was “in the best interest” of students and “a necessary part of our equity work.”

“Our schools must be places where all students, staff, and community members feel safe, supported, and inspired,” the board chairman said.

Jefferson has been a constant target of the historical revisionists, especially over the last year as vandals associated with the Black Lives Matter movement have toppled monuments and statues dedicated to historical figures they deem “racist.”

For leftists, Jefferson is problematic because he owned slaves. Added to that is the charge that he carried on an affair with 16-year-old slave Sally Hemings, and went on to father six of her children.

But as TNA writer R. Cort Kirkwood notes, the Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society published The Jefferson-Hemings ControversyReport of the Scholars Commission, which showed the Jefferson-Hemings tale to be false. DNA tests did not, as widely believed, connect Jefferson to Hemings, and other historical research showed the claims of so-called offspring and descendants of the two were also untrue. 

What Jefferson did do was author the Declaration of Independence, which justified secession from Great Britain and explicitly stated that God, not the state, gives us with inalienable rights that can’t be taken away by the government.

Kirkwood explains about other aspects of Jefferson’s legacy: 

He also wrote the Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom, which Virginia’s General Assembly adopted in 1786 and which anticipated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever,” it says, “nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burdened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions or belief.”

… With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, he doubled the size of the United States by acquiring 827,000 square miles of territory from Napoleon for the meager sum of $15 million. The transaction included all of Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, almost all of the Dakotas, Minnesota west of the Mississippi River, parts of Texas and New Mexico, and Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Rocky Mountains.… Yet because he was a man of his time and one aspect of his life does not meet 21st-century sensibilities, the stunning memorial on the Tidal Basin must be demolished.

George Mason, meanwhile, is famous for refusing to sign the Constitution at the Constitutional Convention. One of his reasons? Because he wanted an immediate end to the slave trade.

Mason also led the fight for a bill of rights in the Constitution, and it’s heavily thanks to him that James Madison introduced, in the First Congress, the first 10 Amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

But again, none if means much to the Left, who ignore history and see nothing more than “racist old white men” upon looking at any historical statue. Unfamiliarity with history is why even statues of Abraham Lincoln and black abolitionist Frederick Douglass have been targeted by the “woke mob.”

Such ridiculous acts are not only a sign of ignorance on the part of the vandals, but show that the overarching agenda of the current “social justice” movement is to make war on all of Western history in order to replace it with an alternative Marxist history. It’s the same agenda that fueled the toppling of statues in the Soviet Union and during Communist China’s Cultural Revolution.

If the cultural pillagers aren’t stopped in their tracks, they’ll keep going until they’ve burned all America’s heritage to the ground.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Falls Church, Virginia School Board voted to rename Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, as well as George Mason High School, replacing the names of these Founding Fathers with those of people who are more woke and acceptable to the vanguard of today’s Cultural Revolution.

School Board Chair Greg Anderson, tongue no doubt planted firmly in cheek, intoned the usual pieties: “The Board took seriously the viewpoints and concerns raised by many students, parents, staff, and community members.” Except it didn’t, since according to WTOP, “a survey of the Falls Church community taken in October…revealed that 56% of the community overall asked that the names stay on the schools, including 61% of the parents of Thomas Jefferson Elementary students and 57% of George Mason High parents.” But their viewpoints didn’t count. As is always the case, the only viewpoints that mattered were those of the woke mob.

Not grasping the old adage that it is better to be silent and be thought an idiot than to open one’s mouth and prove it, Anderson rambled on: “We thank everyone who shared their perspectives with us and will be mindful of your comments as we now begin selecting names that reflect the diversity of opinions in our community” – except, that is, the opinions of the majorities who thought Thomas Jefferson and George Mason were fine names and need not be changed. “Our schools must be places where all students, staff, and community members feel safe, supported, and inspired.” Except, that is, those who respect and revere the Founding Fathers.

And so the foes of American history and America itself, for to repudiate the one is to repudiate the other, score another victory. If His Fraudulency Joe Biden succeeds in gaining the presidency by massive voter fraud, it will hardly matter anyway, but America can only have a future as a free society if its people recover a deep appreciation for its heroes and a pride in its achievements. In fact, that’s why the Left embarked upon its statue-destroying frenzy, tearing down statues not just of Confederates but of Lincoln, Grant, and even Frederick Douglass. They want to make you ashamed of American history so that you won’t see in America anything worth defending as the country continues to be assaulted from within and from outside, with useful idiots such as Greg Anderson helping on the destroyers.

Ahistorical myopia and ignorance of history as displayed by Anderson is a significant cause of the current outpouring of hatred for America. The war on Jefferson and Mason, both slaveowners, is just one small part of the Left’s relentless defamation of our country as a bastion of racial hatred and injustice. Leftist rioters and destroyers are enraged at Americans who are memorialized despite being slaveowners. They’re oblivious to the fact that slavery was not universally considered a moral evil at the time these men lived, and that this is relevant because there are very likely to be people in future ages who look at our times and scratch their heads and ask each other How could they not have known that was wrong?

Even more importantly, the Leftists are heedless of the fact that the movement to abolish slavery arose in Britain and America because of Christian principles that they despise, while slavery persisted long into the twentieth century in several Muslim countries because of Islamic principles that Leftists would rather be caught at a Trump rally than criticize. Saudi Arabia, a country based strictly upon Islamic law, only abolished slavery in 1962, and North African states including Mauritania and Niger only did so in the early twenty-first century, because of Islamic laws that the Leftist rioters would no doubt say it was “Islamophobic” to denounce.

In contrast, it was Greg Anderson’s bête noire Thomas Jefferson who wrote the words “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It was those words that led many Americans, long before the Civil War, to believe that slavery was not only evil in itself, but incompatible with the principles of the American republic. Slavery was ultimately eradicated in the United States by people who believed that Thomas Jefferson had enunciated the principles that made it necessary to wipe it out.

It will be interesting to see who Thomas Jefferson Elementary and George Mason High are named for now. Malcolm X? Angela Davis? Che Guevara? Mao Zedong? Whoever it will be, it is almost certain that the honored figures will be just as imperfect, and maybe even worse violators of human rights than Jefferson or Mason. But the Left is indifferent to the imperfections of its own heroes; its objective is not to find perfect or sinless people to venerate, but to turn Americans against their own heritage. In Falls Church, Virginia, it’s working.

 
 

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON DC PREDATORY MINOR CONSENT TO VACCINATION BILL B23-0171

 

Call for Unified Nationwide Action Asking DC Mayor to Veto B23-0171

Dear NVIC Advocacy Team Members,

PLEASE continue to contact the Mayor of DC, Muriel Bowser, to tell her to VETO B23-0171. WE HAVE MORE TIME!  Spread this far and wide!

The DC City Council passed the dangerous and predatory bill B23-0171 by a final vote of 10:3 on Tuesday 11/17/2020. This law will not only permit children 11 years old and older to consent to vaccines on their own without parental knowledge or consent, the bill requires insurance companies, vaccine providers and schools to conceal the fact that the child has been vaccinated from the parent! It also sets up these young children to be targets of bullying and coercion to be vaccinated behind their parents’ backs!  We strongly oppose this bill.

The Mayor of DC has up to 10 days to respond.  There are three possible actions the Mayor can take: 1) Veto (our preferred action), which would stop the bill from becoming law as long as 2/3 of the council doesn’t vote to override the veto, (2) Sign, which would move the bill forward to Congress for review, or 3) No signature, which has the same effect as her signing it. 

Normally the bill would be sent to the Mayor after the bill is passed, and therefore the clock for 10 calendar days for the Mayor to respond would already be expired.

NVIC’s Director of Advocacy spoke directly with the legislative director of the DC Council this morning, and he told her that the DC Council has not sent the Mayor the bill yet for response, so the 10 day period has not even started. This is good news as we have more time to have more people contact the Mayor requesting a veto.

This delay is not typical, and no definitive reason was given for it although stressors from the current COVID-19 situation was cited as likely contributing. He also explained that once the DC Council sends the Mayor the bill, the legislative website will be automatically updated to reflect that. There will be an entry in the legislative history column indicating the bill is under review by the Mayor and the date it was sent will be included. The 10-calendar day countdown (excluding weekends and holidays) will start from there.  You can monitor this at https://lims.dccouncil.us/Legislation/B23-0171.

You may be wondering why you are receiving this update even if you don’t live in DC. Over the past 2 years, http://NVICAdvocacy.org has tracked and issued opposing positions on 33 various minor consent to vaccination bills filed across many states, and this is the only one that has passed.  Your opposition to the other bills filed in other states helped stop the rest. This bill is different and far worse from the others in that this is the only bill that compels authority figures in the child’s life to deliberately conceal the fact the child was vaccinated from the child’s parent! Also, this bill covers ALL ACIP recommended vaccines. DC is our nation’s capital, and if this is allowed to be implemented there, we can expect bills like this to threaten our children and families in all 50 states.  All of us in every state and DC need to work together to stop this.

The Portland, Oregon branch of America’s largest Marxist organization, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is bragging about winning “Preschool for All”, a communist program similar to one being proposed by Joe Biden which undermines parental authority and indoctrinates children. The initiative would raise $132 million by taxing households that make over $200k per year, a Leninist strategy.

Socialists have long been promoting “Universal Preschool.” Unsurprisingly, it was reported in July that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden unveiled a $775 billion plan for “universal preschool, child care and elder care” “that aims to fundamentally shift the way American families care for each other, both at the beginning of life and at the end.” Joe Biden’s unconstitutional effort includes a “public health jobs corps of 100000 people.”

The Universal Preschool campaign in Multnomah County is completely driven by communists, and supported by subversive “progressive” organizations. One of the main organizers of Measure 26-214 in Portland is Emily Von W. Gilbert, a self-described “anti-fascist socialist feminist”.

“At our April 2019 General Meeting, Portland DSA voted to put a measure on the Multnomah County ballot through Oregon’s citizens’ initiative process,” Portland DSA explained in an email sent to supporters on November 21, 2020. “The measure would tax the rich, pay preschool teachers a fair wage, and give preschool to every kid in the county…And on Election Day 2020, we had 64% of the vote and WE WON,” they bragged.

RAIR Foundation USA warned Americans over a year ago about Measure 26-214, which was a part of the larger national DSA resolution #25 to “educate” the “next generation of Democratic Socialists”. Other approved resolutions included solidarity with Cuba and a resolution to work closely with Antifa groups.

From the DSA childcare resolution:

“Socialism recognizes that childrearing should be a communal undertaking, and that by providing welcoming and supportive spaces for children, we can support both those children’s own social, political, and emotional development, along with ameliorating their primary caregivers’ alienation and atomization under capitalism;

Our own organizing spaces must be inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to people of all ages, including families with children, and we must begin educating and valuing the input of the next generation of Democratic Socialists.”

The childhood-robbing initiative was supported by “more than 30 groups, including at least 10 labor organizations: Northwest Oregon Labor Council, PAT, Reynolds Education Association, AFSCME Local 88, UFCW Local 555, ILWU, CWA Local 7901, PSU-AAUP, PCCFAP, and National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 82,” as reported at a newsletter for unions in the northwest.

The parents who will take part in the “Universal Preschool” program in Portland, Oregon are likely unaware of the real goal of “free” childcare.

POLICE STATE N.J. Seeks to Mandate LGBT-approved Books

Lawmakers in New Jersey are considering legislation that would ban textbooks that are not in a database approved by radical homosexual and transgender activists, sparking alarm about religious liberty and government indoctrination of children.

The proposal, dubbed S1512, would force the state Department of Education to maintain a list of textbook publishers that include “inclusive material” in their products. However, “inclusive material” does not include being inclusive of people of faith who reject LGBT propaganda in the classroom.

Critics blasted the legislation, warning that it threatens religious freedom, strips parental rights, silences First Amendment-protected freedoms, shatters the innocence of children, forces divisive indoctrination into the class, and represents taxation without representation.

Parents and faith leaders are also warning that the legislation would encourage bullying of children who come from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim homes. By teaching that there is something wrong with those who consider homosexuality sinful and believe that there are only two genders, the schools would stigmatize and demonize children from religious homes, critics warned.

Under the bill, local school districts would be stripped of their authority to purchase textbooks that did not include “diversity” in “such areas as gender, … gender identity or expression, and sexual orientation.” In other words, books that do not peddle homosexuality or gender confusion would be banned from school.

“This legislation will force publishing companies and textbook authors to elevate sexual attractions and gender identities in their publications in order to be approved by the state of NJ to sell books to your school district,” explained Director of Advocacy Shawn Hyland with the Family Policy Alliance before urging parents to get involved in the fight.

“Elected school board members, in collaboration with parents serving in curriculum committees, should decide what is best for their community — not the all-encompassing overreach of state government,” Hyland added in an email to activists. “Education is best left to local school boards and parents.”

Conservative grassroots groups across the state are gearing up to fight the bill, too. The Morris Patriots of Northern New Jersey, for instance, sent out an e-mail alert over the weekend including Family Policy Alliance’s warning and urging activists to reach out to legislators to stop the bill before it comes up on November 16 at noon.

“There is no longer religious freedom in NJ when school boards will be mandated to purchase and students will be mandated to read textbooks that normalize LGBTQ behavior,” the Morris Patriots organization said in its mass email encouraging N.J. activists to get involved.

Another group fighting back is Team PYC – Protect Your Children, which has been organizing people of faith all across the state to stand up for religious liberty and against anti-Christian indoctrination in public schools.

In an email about the legislation, Team PYC urged those who value parental rights to prevent the far-left from transforming the state with radical LGBT legislation and tax-funded propaganda targeting children.

The group also warned about another piece of legislation in New Jersey, S2781, set to be considered next month. It would order school districts to “provide instruction” on “diversity” in sexual orientation and gender identity as part of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.

Among other concerns, Team PYC, which is active across the state, blasted the idea of teaching a 10-year-old child that children should get a sex-change or that it is normal to have “fluid ever-changing sexuality or identity.” And yet that is coming, with these bills paving the way.

“The Inclusion Bill (if passed into law) will mandate changing terms and definitions and that is 100% going against the HOLY WORD of GOD how God has made man and woman, not a combination of the two,” explained Victoria Jakelsky, state director for Team PYC.

Dear NVIC Advocacy Team Members,

We need your quick one minute action to reach out to the Mayor of DC, Muriel Bowser, to tell her to VETO B23-0171.

The DC City Council passed the dangerous and predatory bill B23-0171 by a vote of 10:3 on Tuesday 11/17/2020. This law will not only permit children 11 years old and older to consent to vaccines on their own without parental knowledge or consent, the bill requires insurance companies, vaccine providers and schools to conceal the fact that the child has been vaccinated from the parent! It also sets up these young children to be targets of bullying and coercion to be vaccinated behind their parents' backs!

There are multiple federal and local laws that will be broken by this new DC law (Family Educational Rights and Privacy ActNational Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986Religious Exemption to Vaccination). The law is also in conflict with Supreme Court precedent affirming parental rights, and it puts children’s health and safety at risk not only for serious reactions and even possible death, but it exposes children to be victims of under-documented overvaccination.

Mayor Bowser has up to 10 days to respond.  We need her to VETO this new law.  Please help her get the message loud and clear that America is watching and this is not an acceptable action by government!

If you want to get vaccinated, I certainly think you should have the right. But don’t look for Karen Cain 
at the pharmacy when the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. Cain is an anti-vaxxer. Her daughter 
Lauren lived with daily debilitating seizures for 15 years after receiving a bad DPT vaccine as a 
newborn. It was full of mercury. The vaccine destroyed her brain. Cain will never get what she really 
wants… her daughter healthy and back in her arms. But through the Vaccine Injury Compensation 
Program, or VICP, she did get reimbursed for medical bills, then money to stay home and care for her 
daughter. The process took years.

A notice posted on the White House website on November 2 stated that President Trump had just signed an order to establish what he calls the 1776 Commission — an idea he first proposed in September.

Trump began his executive order by summarizing some of the principles cherished by Americans since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He explained that the purpose of the 1776 Commission is “to better enable a rising generation to understand the history and principles of the founding of the United States in 1776 and to strive to form a more perfect Union.” (The phrase “to form a more perfect Union” comes from the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution.)

In outlining the purpose of the 1776 Commission, Trump included the following points:

• The American founding envisioned a political order in harmony with the design of “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” seeing the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as embodied in and sanctioned by natural law and its traditions.

• The formation of a republic around these principles marked a clear departure from previous forms of government, securing rights through a form of government that derives its legitimate power from the consent of the governed. 

• Throughout its national life, our Republic’s exploration of the full meaning of these principles has led it through the ratification of a Constitution, civil war, the abolition of slavery, Reconstruction, and a series of domestic crises and world conflicts.  

However, Trump lamented, despite these proud accomplishments, our heritage is being maligned:

Against this history, in recent years, a series of polemics grounded in poor scholarship has vilified our Founders and our founding. Despite the virtues and accomplishments of this Nation, many students are now taught in school to hate their own country, and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes, but rather villains. This radicalized view of American history lacks perspective, obscures virtues, twists motives, ignores or distorts facts, and magnifies flaws, resulting in the truth being concealed and history disfigured.

While the absence of quality education that upholds our nation’s historic values has existed for decades, the timing of Trumps’ proposal was made more urgent by the publication in a September 2019 issue of the New York Times Magazine of an article by Nikole Hannah-Jones launching the 1619 Project, which asserted that “anti-black racism,” slavery, systemic oppression, and other evils are embedded “in the very DNA” of America.

Support for the article was not even unanimous among the Times’ writers. Times opinion columnist Bret Stephens wrote an opinion piece October 9 calling the 1619 Project a “failed” enterprise that was built on the faulty premise that slavery, not the Declaration of Independence, was the driving force that forged the nation.

Biden Pushes Transgender Activism for 8-Year-Old Kids

During the ABC News town hall on Thursday, Democratic nominee Joe Biden explicitly endorsed transgender identity and activism for children as young as 8 years old. He suggested that he would force schools, homeless shelters, and other institutions to let biological boys into girls’ restrooms, changing rooms, other facilities, and sports in the name of fighting “discrimination.”

Mieke Haeck, who introduced herself as the “proud mom of two girls, eight and ten, my youngest daughter is transgender,” asked Biden how he would reverse President Donald Trump’s “dangerous and discriminatory agenda” on transgender issues. She framed Trump’s policy moves — which involve rightly referring to people by their biological sex over their ostensible gender identity — as attacks on transgender people.

Biden, who had earlier insisted that there are things “you can’t do by executive order unless you’re a dictator,” declared, “I will flat-out just change the law” on alleged “discrimination” against transgender people.

He went on to ridicule the idea that a transgender identity during childhood could be a phase. The Democrat mocked “the idea that an 8-year-old child or a 10-year-old child decides, ‘You know I decided I want to be transgender. That’s what I think I’d like to be, it would make my life a lot easier.'”

He then added, “There should be zero discrimination. … There is no reason to suggest that there should be any right denied your daughter … that your other daughter has a right to be and do.”

Many parents and children would beg to differ.

Although Biden may have the best of intentions for supporting transgender activism, policies that open women’s and girls’ restrooms, locker rooms, homeless shelters, prisons, and sports to biological boys can foster various forms of abuse against women and girls.

Medical Expert: Doctors Are Actually Giving Trans Kids a Disease, and It’s Child Abuse

In Decatur, Ga., a 5-year-old girl claimed she had been sexually assaulted in a girls’ restroom by a 5-year-old boy who identifies as “gender non-conforming” and who uses the girls’ restrooms. Yes, kids can sexually assault one another.

“She went to the bathroom and she was pulling up her pants when one of her classmates came in the bathroom, a little boy. She tried to leave out of the bathroom, the little boy pushed her against the bathroom stall, basically pinned her up against there,” the mother said, summarizing her daughter’s story. “She asked him to stop, he wouldn’t.”

The Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) investigated the case and “found conflicting evidence” about whether the boy “was in the girls’ bathroom and, if so, was there because of his gender identity,” but the boy’s father readily admitted that the boy uses the girls’ bathroom.

When it comes to sports, Biden’s policies would require opening girls’ sports to biological boys who enjoy tremendous biological advantages. Such a policy “deprives women of the opportunity to participate fully and fairly in sports and is fundamentally unfair to female athletes,” Attorney General Bill Barr argued. The Department of Justice has filed a statement of interest in support of female athletes in Connecticut who lost multiple state championship titles to biological boys who identified themselves as girls.

Perhaps the worst implication of Biden’s support for transgender identity at age 8 involves the experimental “treatments” doctors push on children in order to “confirm” their “gender identity.” Major medical associations have embraced transgender ideology, recommending experimental “puberty-blocking” drugs with long-term side-effects for kids and cross-sex hormones for older children and young adults. Endocrinologists have warned that the “treatments” actually cause a disease.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who has encouraged transgender “treatments” for some who suffer from gender dysphoria, has rightly warned about “a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people, who are being set on a lifelong path of medicalization that may result in the loss of their fertility and/or full sexual function.” She shared a documentary about the gender clinic in Britain, where whistleblowers have voiced concerns that some parents push transgenderism on children because the parents prefer a “straight” transgender child over a “gay” child.

Expect More States to Protect Kids From Experimental Transgender Drugs in 2020

Men and women who once identified as transgender have grown to reject that identity, lamenting the serious damage they did to their bodies. “I am a real, live 22-year-old woman, with a scarred chest and a broken voice, and five o’clock shadow because I couldn’t face the idea of growing up to be a woman, that’s my reality,” admitted one woman who once identified as a man and took cross-sex hormones. One man described his artificial female anatomy as a “Frankenstein hack job.”

Studies have shown that between 80 and 95 percent of children who express gender dysphoria (the persistent and painful identification with a gender opposite their biological sex) will come to identify with their biological sex if they are allowed to develop naturally.

Biden has promised to “ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals have full access to all appropriate health care treatments and resources,” including “covering care related to transitioning—including gender confirmation surgery.”

The Democrat has not clarified whether or not he supports “transition care” for 8-year-old children, but his statements on Thursday night suggested that he does. Would he consider it “discrimination” if a biological boy who identifies as a girl cannot receive experimental and potentially dangerous hormones to make his body more feminine or to prevent his body from going through the natural process of puberty?

ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos did not press Biden on this important question.

Americans should be concerned about Biden’s support for childhood transgender identity and activism. They should also be concerned about Biden’s rush to “flat-out just change the law” to push radical transgender activism at the expense of other key concerns like religious freedom, potential child abuse, and more.

Any reforms to recognize transgender identity should come through Congress and the state legislatures, not a presidential executive order or a sweeping Supreme Court decision. Bans on transgender “discrimination” may be helpful and necessary to a limited extent, but they also open up a Pandora’s Box of issues, including religious freedom, stigmatization of gay and lesbian people, privacy rights, and experimental “treatments” that will likely do more harm than good.

Ironically, Biden seems to understand that he cannot declare tax policy by executive order, but he appears to be chomping at the bit to ram new transgender laws on Americans while bypassing Congress. Even if that doesn’t entail pushing dangerous experimental drugs on 8-year-old children, it should terrify Americans.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is asking federal officials to include children in COVID-19 vaccine trials.1 On September 29, 2020, Sara Goza, MD, president of the AAP, wrote a letter addressed to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Steven Hahn, MD stating, “Children must be included in vaccine trials to best understand any potential unique immune responses and/or unique safety concerns.”2

Currently, none of the COVID-19 vaccines in clinical development are being tested in children under the age of 18 years.3

The letter goes on to state, “It would also be less than desirable to have one or more SARS-CoV-2 vaccines licensed or available under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) at a time when no data have been collected on the safety, tolerability, dose, and regimen for children.”4

The AAP is also asking federal officials to include individuals in the trials who reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the U.S. population and include pregnant women and individuals with underlying poor health conditions.5

AAP Blames Mistrust of COVID-19 Vaccines on Anti-Vaccination Movement

In the letter to HHS and the FDA, AAP officials blame the “vocal, well-established and growing anti-vaccination movement” for spreading “fear mistrust and misinformation” about COVID-19 vaccine candidates. The letter states:

Unfortunately, fear, mistrust, and misinformation about a potential SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is being spread from a vocal, well-established, and growing anti-vaccination movement. For a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to be effective in controlling the pandemic, it must not only be safe and effective, but must also be embraced by medical providers and the public. For this to occur, Americans must have trust and confidence in the processes by which these vaccines are being tested for both safety and efficacy, and in the transparency of the scientific basis for licensure and recommendations for use. If that trust is jeopardized, mistrust of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines could become widespread and result not only in reduced uptake of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines but also in decreased confidence in all vaccines.6

Pfizer Submits Amended Protocol to FDA to Include Children in Clinical Trials

On Sept. 12, 2020, Pfizer, Inc. of New York City, New York and BioNTech SE of Mainz, Germany announced that they had submitted an amended protocol to the FDA to expand the enrollment of their Phase 3 pivotal COVID-19 vaccine trial to include approximately 44,000 participants, which also allows for the enrollment of new types of populations.7

The proposed expansion would allow the companies to increase trial population diversity and include adolescents as young as 16 years of age and people with chronic, stable HIV (human immunodeficiency viruses), Hepatitis C or Hepatitis B infection, as well as provide additional safety and efficacy data.8
