The Weekly Reload Podcast examines how gun control groups are out-fundraising the NRA ahead of the 2024 election, as Ed Morrissey of Hot Air weighs in on what this financial edge might mean for Second Amendment supporters.

As we enter the final stretch before the historic 2024 election, the fight for financial backing between gun rights and gun control groups is heating up, highlighting more profound questions about the role of money in shaping political influence.

Gun Control Funding Outpaces NRA

This year, gun control groups like Everytown for Gun Safety, Giffords, and the Brady Campaign have gained a financial edge over the NRA and its allies. Ed Morrissey, managing editor at Hot Air, notes that these groups now have a massive fundraising advantage, primarily thanks to a few wealthy and desperate donors like Michael Bloomberg and the backing of larger progressive dark money networks.

With this financial support, gun control groups have secured significant spending power, allowing them to push their agenda in various state and local races across the country.

But Morrissey questions whether this funding surge will truly translate into a significant advantage on Election Day. Although gun control groups have a clear funding lead, Morrissey believes the results of the highest-profile races may not be heavily swayed by money alone. Instead, the deeply rooted values held by voters on both sides of the gun debate may play a more decisive role.

The NRA’s Targeted Strategy

In contrast, the NRA and other gun rights groups have taken a more focused approach, targeting key races like those of Senators Jon Tester in Montana and Jared Golden in Maine. Morrissey points out that this strategic spending aligns with the core supporters of the gun rights movement, aiming to make impactful investments where possible rather than trying to match gun control groups dollar-for-dollar.

The NRA’s approach reflects a more cautious stance following recent struggles. After years of financial and internal management issues, former NRA donors may be hesitant to contribute to large organizations and instead shift their support to smaller, more effective, hardline groups like The Second Amendment Foundation and Gun Owners of America (GOA). While these groups advocate fiercely for gun rights, they lack the NRA’s historical reach, creating a gap that the pro-gun side has yet to bridge fully.

Ad Messaging & “Coalition Spending”

As for how each side is spending, a notable trend this election is what Morrissey calls “coalition spending” by groups like Everytown. With a well-funded coalition, gun control groups are expanding their spending beyond traditional races, even putting resources into school board elections. Everytown and Giffords are also running ads that combine gun control with other high-profile issues, like abortion, aiming to capture voters focused on multiple issues at once. The NRA, meanwhile, has linked gun rights with crime control, arguing that the two are closely related.

Both sides recognize that tying their cause to broader social concerns could strengthen their appeal. For gun control advocates, highlighting gun policy alongside abortion rights could resonate with left-leaning voters who prioritize judicial decisions and a progressive court system. Meanwhile, the NRA’s focus on crime and self-defense speaks directly to its core supporters, emphasizing how Second Amendment rights protect personal safety.

Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump: A Contrast in Gun Policy

Both major party candidates have approached gun policy in unique ways. While Kamala Harris claims to own a handgun for self-defense, her past support for gun control policies and “mandatory buybacks” has led many gun rights supporters to view her stance with skepticism. Morrissey argues that her recent statements may not be enough to convince voters who remember her more restrictive views from earlier campaigns.

On the other hand, Trump’s messaging has centered on the importance of protecting gun rights, often reminding voters to head to the polls and painting Harris as a threat to the Second Amendment. Morrissey suggests that, despite Trump’s occasional controversial statements on gun policy (such as his past support for “red flag” laws and the political maneuvering around bump stock ban), he has built a level of trust among gun owners, largely due to his record of Supreme Court appointments that led to major pro-gun rulings.

The Real Question: Does Money Make the Difference?

For both sides, the bottom line remains: how much does funding sway voter decisions, especially on such a deeply personal and value-driven issue as gun rights? According to Morrissey, while significant funding certainly allows gun control groups to extend their reach, it’s uncertain whether this financial edge will result in an electoral advantage. For many gun rights voters, the choice is clear, and no amount of money is likely to change their stance.

As we careen toward Election Day, the divide over gun rights and gun control funding is a microcosm of the broader American political landscape—where funding, ideology, and voter turnout are tightly interwoven. Regardless of where the money flows, it’s the voters, driven by their deeply held beliefs, who will ultimately determine the outcome.

Linsey Davis, one of the ABC News moderators who relayed questions in Tuesday’s presidential debate, has been revealed to be the sorority sister of Democrat candidate Kamala Harris.

Viewers of the debate noticed Davis’s numerous attempts to “fact-check” Republican candidate Donald Trump, while allowing Harris to easily slide through the debate without any pushback in real time.

Harris joined the sorority during her undergraduate days at Howard university in 1986, graduating with a bachelor of arts (BA).

Davis, on the other hand, joined the sorority as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, where she graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s in psychology.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the first African American sorority in the United States, founded in 1908.

“The fact that Kamala Harris and Linsey Davis are members of the same sorority (Alpha Kappa Alpha – Howard and UVA respectively) is relevant with respect to potential bias,” an X (Twitter) user wrote.

In one of the loudest interjections in the debate, Davis attempted to fact-check Trump’s abortion claim live, following Trump referencing former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s 2019 comments about aborting babies after birth.

“There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born,” Davis responded to Trump’s comments, prompting conservatives to point out that six states as well as the District of Columbia (DC) do not have any limits in place on the procedure.

“Biased ABC anchor Linsey Davis teams up with Vice President Kamala Harris to attack former President Donald Trump on abortion,” wrote Tom Olohan, a writer for the conservative Media Research Center.

“ABC is making a huge mistake by trying to fact check this live. They’re only proving how biased they are. Harris fabricated an attack on Trump over IVF. ABC sat there and said nothing,” wrote Ari Fleischer, a former White House press secretary during the Bush administration.

“Linsey Davis completely interjects herself into the debate to help Kamala. "No surprise at all there,” OutKick founder Clay Travis wrote in a post on X.

Harris was not fact-checked when she falsely claimed that Trump was behind the Heritage Project’s “Project 2025,” and she also falsely claimed that Trump wanted to ban IVF treatment, so the former GOP president was forced to fact-check herself in real time during the debate.

Following the debate, the Harris campaign called for a second debate, which Trump responded to by stating that he does not believe there needs to be a second debate, as he won the first. Harris previously disregarded a proposed Fox News debate, which would not have been as unfair and biased in her favor like ABC News’ recent event.

“When a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are, ‘I want a rematch,’” Trump wrote on Trump social.

Former President Donald Trump says that Vice President Kamala Harris’s team told his campaign that she would not be participating in the Fox News presidential debate scheduled for September 4th.

On Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social, saying that Harris would not be participating in the Fox debate that would have been moderated by anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum in Pennsylvania.

“I am not surprised by this development because I feel that she knows it is very difficult, at best, for her to defend her record setting Flip-Flopping on absolutely everything she once believed in, including her statements that THERE WILL BE NO FRACKING IN PENNSYLVANIA and her HORRIBLE Performance on the Border,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

Trump had initially been reluctant to debate the Vice President as she was not yet the official candidate of the Democrat Party. However, the former president later agreed to debate her once she received the official party nomination.

Meanwhile, both Trump and Harris have confirmed that they will be participating in a debate held by the liberal network ABC News on September 10th. The 45th president also said that he has agreed to an NBC News debate on September 25th.

Additionally, a debate between vice presidential candidates has been agreed upon as well. Governor Tim Walz (D-Minn.) is set to debate JD Vance (R-Ohio) on CBS News on October 1st.

“Voters deserve to see the candidates for the highest office in the land share their competing visions for our future,” Harris’ campaign communications director Michael Tyler said in a statement last week. “The more they play games, the more insecure and unserious Trump and Vance reveal themselves to be to the American people. Those games end now.”

Trump later stated that instead of the Fox News debate, he will be participating in a town hall along with Fox News host Sean Hannity in Pennsylvania.

The Debate: Biden’s Top 5 Big Lies

Liar-in-Chief

Old Joe Biden may be a poor debater, but at least he tells the truth, unlike Bad Orange Man. As improbable as it is, that’s the line the left has decided upon to explain away Biden’s appalling performance in last Thursday’s debate. But this excuse appears even more appalling in light of the fact that Biden lied his way through that debate.

Old Joe himself said it at a Friday rally: “Well, folks, I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debah — debate as much as I used to. But I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth.” His boss Barack Obama quickly followed suit:  “Bad debate nights happen." Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; someone who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and that's why so much is at stake in November.”

Yet Truthful Joe’s “bad debate night” was made worse by the fact that the garrulous old kleptocrat lied pretty much every time he opened his mouth. Here are five of his most outrageous whoppers:

  1. Biden repeated the old charge that Trump refused to visit the graves of fallen U.S. soldiers in France and called them “suckers and losers.” Trump once again denied having done so, whereupon Biden said: “You had a four-star general stand at your side, who was on your staff, who said you said it, period.” Old Joe was referring to Trump’s former chief of staff, John Kelly, who said in Oct. 2023, three years after the claim was first made, that Trump “rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France.”

Trump accused Kelly of lying, so it’s a case of whom one chooses to believe — except that John Bolton, who has harshly criticized Trump, said in Sept. 2020: “I didn’t hear either of those comments or anything even resembling them. I was there at that point in time that morning when it was decided that he would not go Aisne-Marne cemetery. He decided not to do it because of John Kelly’s recommendation. It was entirely a weather-related decision, and I thought of the proper thing to do.”

Why would Bolton, who hates Trump, lie to cover for him? Bolton also inadvertently exposed Kelly as lying. According to Bolton, who would have had no reason to make up for such a thing, Kelly recommended that Trump not visit the cemetery. Then three years later, Kelly claimed that Trump “wouldn’t” visit the cemetery. That strongly suggests that it’s Kelly — and hence Biden — who is lying, not Trump.

  1. Biden claimed that Trump said that Hitler did some good things. Once again, the source for this is John Kelly, who has already been shown to be an unreliable witness. Trump’s spokesperson Liz Harrington said:  “This is totally false. President Trump never said this. It is made-up fake news, probably by a general who was incompetent and was fired.” Kelly claims that Trump praised Hitler during his Nov. 9-11, 2018 trip to Paris. Yet Kelly remained Trump’s chief of staff. Only nearly a month later, on Dec. 8, 2018, did Trump announce that he was replacing Kelly, who remained in the position until Jan. 2, 2019. Would you have kept working for a man who praised Hitler? I wouldn’t have.
  1. Old Joe also dragged out his oft-repeated claim that the National Socialists demonstrating in Charlottesville were “fine people.” This lie is particularly galling, for at the press conference where Trump supposedly made this statement, he said: “I’ve condemned neo-Nazis. I’ve condemned many different groups, but not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch.
  1. Biden claimed that Trump “wants to get rid of Social Security.” Yet this was after Trump had said of the alleged president: “This man is going to single-handedly destroy Social Security." The millions and millions of people coming in, they’re trying to put them on Social Security. He will wipe out Social Security.” Warning that Biden regime policies are endangering Social Security would be strange coming from a man who wanted to get rid of it.
  1. Biden said: “The pandemic are so badly handled, many people are dying. All he said was, it’s not that serious. Just inject a little bleach in your arm. It’d be all right.” As cartoonist-turned-pundit Scott Adams has explained in detail, Trump was referring to “the concept of killing Covid on external surfaces using sunlight and UV light. "Light as a .disinfectant' was collectively mentioned 21 times by the experts – Dr. Bryan and Dr. Birx – and by Trump.” Trump’s exact words bear this out.

Besides lying outright, Biden also demonstrates anew by repeating these claims that much of the opposition to Trump is based not on his policies, but on rude or unkind things he has supposedly said. Aside from the claim about Social Security, these charges would have no effect on public policy even if they were true. Old Joe and his handlers know that if the campaign comes down to Trump’s record as president versus Biden’s, Trump will win in a walk if the election isn’t rigged. And so all this dredging-up of ancient and discredited quotes will continue — anything to keep people from looking at Biden’s record.
