Tensions over Taiwan rise between US & China as Trump departs for US

President Trump is heading back to the US following a historic trip to China, participating in high-stakes talks with President Xi Jinping. While both sides confirmed a strengthened relationship between the countries tensions over Taiwan are rising. Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Thursday of “clashes and even conflicts” with the United States over Taiwan, cautioning President Donald Trump that tensions over the Beijing-claimed island could jeopardize ties between the world’s two biggest economies. This will be the first visit to China from a sitting U.S. president since Trump visited in 2017, Reuters reported. In Trump's first year back in office, China and the U.S. went tit for tat in a tariff trade war. The war in Iran is expected to be up for discussion on the visit, as China gets about 60% of its oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

Nine years since his first state visit to China, US President Donald Trump touches down in Beijing ahead of the highly anticipated China-US presidential summit. Trump said on social media on Monday that he was “very much looking forward” to his China visit and that “great things will happen for both countries”.
