Zohran Kwame Mamdani is a 33-year-old Democratic socialist and state assemblyman who has made history by winning the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. He is set to become New York's first Muslim mayor, first Asian mayor, and first millennial mayor if elected. Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to New York City with his family at the age of 7. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. Mamdani became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.
