Trump Calls On Walmart To ‘Eat The Tariffs’ Rather Than Raising Prices: ‘I’ll Be Watching’

President Donald Trump called on Walmart to “eat the tariffs” rather than raising prices and blaming the Trump administration for price hikes.

“Walmart should STOP trying to blame tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain. Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, ‘EAT THE TARIFFS,’ and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” Trump wrote in a Saturday morning Truth Social post.

Trump’s remarks came after Walmart CEO Doug McMillon suggested that the retailer might increase prices on general merchandise, largely sourced from China, due to the new tariffs.

“We’ll keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can given the reality of small retail margins,” the company told Reuters.

Walmart CFO John David Rainey echoed the company’s sentiment on Thursday, stating that “We have not seen price increases at this magnitude, at this speed at which they’re coming at us before, and so it makes for a challenging environment.”

Rainey also responded to the deal the Trump administration was able to agree to with China, lowering tariffs from a sky high 145% down to 30%.

Rainey stated that he is “pleased with the progress that’s been made by the administration on tariffs from the levels that were announced in early April, but they’re still too high.”

President Trump has maintained that a tariff policy incentivizes companies to manufacture products in the United States to avoid an overreliance on China, while also bringing factory jobs back to the U.S.

The recent tariff deal made with China lasts for 90 days.

“If I didn’t do that deal with China, I think China would have broken apart. We are not going to break up,” Trump stated on Friday. “Our country has a lot of spirit.”

President Trump previously met with McMillon to discuss the impact of tariffs on imported goods, with a Walmart spokesperson characterizing the meeting as “productive.”

A Mexican naval training ship has rammed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday, killing two individuals on board and injuring over a dozen others.

The Mexican ship, known as the “Cuauhtémoc” was reportedly on a goodwill tour, holding 277 individuals on board as it struck the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Viral video footage shows the ship slamming into the underside of the bridge, ripping the masts of the ship down as it proceeded to pass underneath.

As the ship crashed into the bridge, multiple individuals on the top rung of the mast were seen violently swinging.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a social media post following the incident, issuing her condolences for the lost crew members.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, who lost their lives in an unfortunate accident in New York Harbor. Our sympathy and support go out to their families. The Navy, with the support of local authorities, is currently treating the wounded. The Mexican ambassador to the United States and staff from the Mexican Consulate General in New York are supporting the Navy,” she wrote on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D-N.Y.) attributed the crash to a loss of power.

“Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge. At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries,” he wrote in an X post.

“We are praying for everyone on board and their families and are grateful to our first responders who quickly jumped into action, ensuring this accident wasn’t much worse. Following our preliminary inspection, we can confirm that the bridge sustained no damage and is now open to the public,” Adams added.

A spokesperson from the U.S. Coast Guard provided an update on Sunday morning, stating that 21 people were injured in the incident.

Prior to the crash, the ship was docked at Pier 17 in Manhattan, right near the Brooklyn Bridge. The ship was reportedly supposed to sail out of the New York Harbor and head to Iceland before drifting in the wrong direction, according to a spokesman for the city’s Office of Emergency Management.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting a full investigation of the fatal crash.

Speaker Johnson: Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’ containing $900B in spending cuts still ‘on track’ despite GOP defectors

House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Sunday that President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” aimed at cutting around $900 billion in federal spending, is still “on track” to pass by the “end of next week” despite opposition from GOP fiscal hawks.

Johnson (R-La.) made an appearance on “Fox News Sunday” to explain the components of the bill and also provide an update after the legislation that was shot down last week by GOP hard-liners.

“It’s very important for everybody to understand why we’re being so aggressive on the timetable, and why this really is so important. This is the vehicle through which we will deliver on the mandate that the American people gave us in the last election,” Johnson began.

“You’re going to have historic savings for the American people, historic tax relief for American workers, historic investments in border security, at the same time that we’re restoring American energy dominance, and we’re rebuilding the defense industrial base,” he continued. “And we’re ensuring that programs like Medicaid and SNAP are strengthened for U.S. citizens who need and deserve them and are not being squandered away by illegal aliens and persons who are ineligible to receive them and are cheating the system.”

“And look, the tax cuts — look, they're critical. We’re going to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent. We’re going to eliminate taxes on overtime and tips as the president promised, and new tax relief for seniors on Social Security. We’re going to cut taxes on job creators, so that will help everybody across the country at the same time as incentivizing American-made production and manufacturing,” Johnson added.

The House Budget Committee is set to convene at 10 p.m. on Sunday to vote on whether the bill advances to the House.

Should the bill pass through the House Budget Committee, the Rules Committee will meet next week prior to a vote on the House floor by the end of the week.

GOP Reps. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.), Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas) all voted against the bill, arguing that the vast majority of the savings won't go into effect until after Trump leaves office.

The GOP defectors were holding out for the bill to implement Medicaid work requirements much sooner, which is where the bulk of the federal savings are expected to stem from.

The work requirements for Medicaid would mandate that able bodied adults aged 19-64 would need to work at least 80-hours-per-month in order to be eligible to receive the health insurance.

“What they were complaining about or mostly concerned about, I think is, for example, work requirements in Medicaid. They wanted them to be implemented earlier rather than later. Well, so do we,” Johnson continued.

“The concern is … the ability of the states to retool their systems and ensure the verification processes, to make sure that all the new laws and all the new safeguards that we’re placing can actually be enforced,” he noted. “We’re working through all those details, and we’ll get it done.”

“Look, all 11 of our committees have wrapped up their work and they spent less and saved more than even we projected initially. This really is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that we have here,” he added. “We’re on track, working around the clock to deliver this nation-shaping legislation for the American people as soon as possible.”

“This is a big thing. We cannot fail, and we’ll get it done for the American people.”
