Chinese hackers breach US Treasury computers

The US Treasury says Chinese hackers stole major documents in a computer breach. The hackers compromised third-party cybersecurity service provider BeyondTrust and were able to access unclassified documents, the letter said.

China denies accusations of breaching U.S. Treasury, alert triggers cybersecurity probe

The US Treasury Department disclosed that Chinese hackers breached a third-party service provider earlier this month, gaining access to several workstations and unclassified documents. The breach, which occurred after BeyondTrust, the service provider, alerted the Treasury on December 8, allowed the hackers to bypass security using a stolen key and remotely access employee systems. The Treasury did not specify how many workstations were affected or what documents were stolen, but assured there was no evidence of ongoing access to sensitive data. In response, the department is strengthening its cybersecurity defenses. The Treasury is investigating the breach in collaboration with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The attack is linked to broader Chinese state-sponsored cyber activities, including the Salt Creek campaign targeting telecommunications companies. Beijing has denied involvement and opposes all forms of cyberattacks, claiming to take measures against such threats.

U.S. Says Chinese Hackers Breached Treasury Systems, Beijing Rejects Washington's "Smear Attack"

In December 30, 2024, the US Treasury Department confirmed that Chinese-backed hackers had infiltrated its systems in a major cybersecurity breach. Assistant Secretary for Management Aditi Hardikar disclosed that the hackers used a stolen key to remotely access Treasury workstations. The breach, attributed to a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor, compromised unclassified documents. A third-party software provider, BeyondTrust, first reported the breach on December 8, revealing that hackers exploited a stolen key tied to their service. Both AT&T and Verizon also confirmed cyberattacks by the Chinese intelligence group Salt Typhoon, targeting major US telecom firms and gaining access to sensitive communications. The US Commerce Department responded by banning China Telecom operations in the US, while CISA urged senior political figures to switch to encrypted apps. Despite denials from China, the US government continues to strengthen efforts to protect national systems and interests.

Europe’s Muslim Population Is Rising And Jews Are Leaving.

Throughout Western Europe, the Muslim percentage of the population is growing steadily, both from continued immigration and from much higher birth rates among Muslims than those exhibited by the indigenous non-Muslim population. There are now an estimated forty-four million Muslims in Europe, about 5% of the population. That number is expected to rise to 7.5% of the population — if nothing is done to halt Muslim immigration — by 2050. And growing antisemitism, which is encouraged and spread mainly by those Muslim migrants, is causing more Jews to think of leaving Europe for Israel or North America. More on this disturbing development can be found here: “Islam conquers Europe and Jews flee,” by Giulio Meotti, Israel National News, December 18, 2024:

…“Islam is advancing and I see in the West a desire to disappear,” Michel Houellebecq told the Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera.

In the Paris of the author of “Submission”, a dystopian novel that has become a daily chronicle, the famous philosopher Pierre Manent has just been reported to the judiciary, guilty of having said that “the number of Muslims in France cannot be allowed to grow at an indefinite rate. Secularism can more easily move a statue of Saint Michael than transform Islam. Failure to act could lead to a tragedy that no version of secularism will enable us to face”. Left-wing deputies have denounced him. “Incitement to hatred”. Article 40 of the penal code.

Pierre Manent’s statement is not one meant to incite hatred. He is, rather, a vox clamantis in deserto, a bleak Cassandra who sees, and fears, the ongoing Islamization of Europe. Without hate, but with foreboding. They are different things.

“Victims of antisemitism and Islamism, unite! The time of pogroms has returned, the Jews know it and have been saying it for a long time,” said the courageous Algerian writer Boualem Sansal.

Boualem Sansal is an Algerian novelist and essayist who deserves to be widely known outside the francophone world. He writes in French. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Editions Gallimard Arabic Novel prize for his book Rue Darwin. The prize is awarded by the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Paris. However, after the council learned that Sansal had taken part in the Jerusalem Writers Festival earlier that year, they decided not to award him the prize money of 15,000 euros. Sansal fought back, describing the decision as “completely unacceptable.” Arab countries – and especially his own country of Algeria – he said had “locked themselves in a prison of intolerance.” France Culture radio director Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, who headed the predominantly Arab jury that awarded the prize, resigned his post in protest, claiming that the prize money had been withdrawn as a “sordid” consequence of pressure from the terror group Hamas. D’Avram explained that “between being nominated for the prize and receiving it, Boualem Sansal visited Israel … Hamas immediately issued a statement calling his presence an act of treason against the Palestinians. The reaction of the Arab Ambassadors Council was a direct result of this.”

Sansal has always maintained that he does not regret visiting Israel. “I am glad I visited Israel and returned with great happiness.” He also said that “Israelis have all the reasons in the world to be proud of what they have achieved in their country in such a short period of time…In so many fields, Israel is at the international forefront and it is very impressive.”

Sansal also said that he was moved by support he had received from Avigdor Lieberman, who as Israel’s Minister of Culture had denounced the Arab boycott of Sansal for having visited Israel. Sansal said of Lieberman: “His statement was so gracious in comparison to Arab governments. He told them: ‘You’re persecuting intellectuals. We embrace them and care for their safety. That is why your citizens are rebelling against you.’ That is a harsh blow to Arab governments.”  And while he had nothing but praise for Lieberman and for Israel, Sansal criticized Hamas as well, saying that it was a terrorist movement that “has taken Gazans hostage. It has taken Islam hostage.”

It is Sansal, an Algerian born into Islam (but who I assume is no longer a believer), who is alarmed about a future Muslim takeover of Europe, and about the jihadism that is now spreading and poisoning the minds of young Muslims. If you won’t listen to such Infidels as Robert Spencer on the future of an ever-more-islamizing Europe, then for god’s sake listen to the former Muslim Boualem Sansal.

Trump’s First Actions and Job Data to Test Market in January

Trump's First Actions and Job Data to Test Market in January

Sunday, 29 December 2024 06:15 AM EST

After closing the books on a banner year for U.S. stocks, investors expect to ride seasonal momentum into mid-January when a slew of economic data and a transition of power in Washington could send markets moving.

The S&P 500 rose roughly 25% in 2024 through Dec. 27, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite index <.IXIC>, which surpassed 20,000 for the first time in December, is up more than 31%.

On Friday, however, stocks sold off amid some profit taking and questions about how markets might perform in January, according to analysts and traders.

"There are concerns that maybe the first part of (next) year could involve some repositioning and reallocation of funds and those that are trading today and next week are probably just trying to get a little bit ahead of that," said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth.

Stocks tend to do well in the last five trading days of December and into the first two days of January, a phenomenon dubbed the Santa Claus rally, which has driven S&P gains of an average of 1.3% since 1969, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

Despite the Friday selloff, for the last five trading sessions, the S&P rose 1.77%, while the Nasdaq was up 1.8%.

Just how long upward momentum lasts will depend on several forces that could help drive markets in 2025.

Monthly U.S. employment data on Jan. 10 should give investors a fresh view into the health and strength of the U.S. economy. Job growth rebounded in November following hurricane- and strike-related setbacks earlier in the year.

The market's strength will be tested again shortly after, when U.S. companies start reporting fourth-quarter earnings.

Investors anticipate a 10.33% earnings per share growth in 2025, versus a 12.47% expected rise in 2024, according to LSEG data, although excitement over President-elect Donald Trump's policies is expected to boost the outlook for some sectors like banks, energy and crypto.

"There's the hope that taxes and regulations will be lowered or reduced next year, and that will help support corporate profits, which are what drive the market in the first place," said Michael Rosen, chief investment officer at Angeles Investments.

Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20 could also throw the markets a few curve balls. He is expected to release at least 25 executive orders on his first day on a range of issues from immigration to energy and crypto policy.

Trump has also threatened tariffs on goods from China and levies on products from both Mexico and Canada, as well as plans to crack down on immigration, creating costs that companies could ultimately pass on to consumers.

Helen Chen, associate director of trading at Monex USA, said a new administration always brings with it a large degree of uncertainty. There is also a good chance the impact of the Trump administration's expected trade policies is far from fully priced into global currency markets, she added.

"We're looking ahead to see which of those proposed policies are enacted, which might be further down the pipeline," Given said, adding she expected a big impact on the euro, Mexican peso, the Canadian dollar, and the Chinese yuan.

The conclusion of the Federal Reserve's first monetary policy meeting of the year in late January could also present a challenge to the U.S. stock rally.

Stocks tumbled on Dec. 18 when the Fed implemented its third interest-rate cut for the year and signaled fewer cuts in 2025 because of an uncertain inflation outlook, disappointing investors who had expected lower rates to boost corporate profits and valuations.

Still, that could be good for alternative assets like cryptocurrencies. The incoming crypto-friendly Trump administration is adding to a number of catalysts that are boosting crypto investors' confidence, said Damon Polistina, head of research at investment platform Eaglebrook Advisors.

Bitcoin surged above $107,000 this month on hopes of friendlier Trump policies.

Justified Defense: 19-Year Aggressor Shot & Wounded in Clarksville TN Walmart ~ VIDEOS

In a harrowing incident that could have escalated into a greater tragedy, quick action and defensive use of a firearm prevented potential harm at a Clarksville, Tennessee, Walmart on Fort Campbell Boulevard.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. on a bustling Tuesday, what began as an argument took a life-threatening turn when 19-year-old Labron Gibson brandished a firearm inside the store.

Authorities, responding to several 911 calls, confirmed that Gibson was the primary aggressor in the altercation. Faced with an imminent threat, another individual, who was present with his family, was compelled to act in defense, resulting in Gibson sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. This individual’s response underlines the critical role of self-defense in ensuring the safety of innocents when confronted with unprovoked aggression.

Clarksville Police swiftly managed the scene, ensuring no active shooter was on the premises and later cleared the store. The quick and organized response of law enforcement helped avert further chaos, reassuring the community during a tense situation.

Gibson was later treated at Tennova Healthcare and is expected to face charges of aggravated assault. This incident, while unfortunate, showcases the importance of the right to self-defense, especially when legal firearm owners are forced to confront unforeseen threats. It also highlights the ongoing debates surrounding public safety and responsible gun ownership. As the community reflects on this incident, it becomes increasingly clear that preparedness and the right to legally defend oneself and one’s family are pivotal in today’s world. This event is a reminder of the fine line between security and vulnerability and the essential role responsible citizens play in bridging that gap with, if needed, lethal force.

“Gave It Away For $1…” Trump Wants Panama Canal Back, “It’s For All Nations” Says Panama | CLRCUT

Donald Trump is upset with Panama for charging high fees to US ships using the Panama Canal. He has threatened that the U.S. could take control of it again if rates aren’t lowered. Trump argued that the canal, which was built by the US and is mostly used by American ships, should never have been given to Panama in 1999. He believes the US was unfairly forced to hand it over and now wants it back, especially because of the growing influence of countries like China. Canada, the Panama Canal, and Now Greenland-What’s behind Trump’s expansionist rhetoric?

First, President-elect Donald Trump tweaked Canada’s far-left Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about becoming governor of the 51st state of the United States of America. He said that the Panama Canal should once again come under American control. Make that the 52nd state. Now, are you ready for a 53rd state? On Sunday, Trump renewed a call he made during his first term: that the United States should buy Greenland from Denmark. Could the man possibly be serious?

Maybe not. The left’s propaganda arm, also known as the mainstream media, loves to portray Trump and his supporters as angry, bitter, ignorant people lashing out against people who know better what’s good for them. Trump has never gotten credit for his sense of humor, despite the fact that he is easily the funniest man to occupy the White House since Ronald Reagan, and may even surpass the Gipper.

Much of Trump’s humor goes entirely unnoticed. Few have taken any note of the fact that his new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, recalls the Doge internet meme that Elon Musk briefly made Twitter’s logo in 2023. And Trump’s teasing of “Governor” Trudeau went so far over the head of MSNBC that the far-left garbage machine put out an article ascribing the gibe to Trump’s “confusion.”

On the other hand, there was nothing funny about Trump’s statement that the U.S. should resume control of the Panama Canal. “Has anyone ever heard of the Panama Canal?” Trump asked the crowd at AmericaFest. “Because we’re being ripped off at the Panama Canal just like we’re being ripped off everywhere else.”

Trump went on to explain that the Panama Canal “was given to Panama and to the people of Panama,” “but it has provisions, you gotta treat us fairly and they haven’t treated us fairly. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America in full, quickly, and without question.”

Trump wasn’t being funny about Greenland, either. “For the purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World,” he wrote on Sunday, “the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” This got the same reception that it got during Trump’s first term. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede said haughtily on Monday that “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and we will not be for sale.” He didn’t seem to have mentioned that Greenland is not an independent state but is Danish territory.

Even in floating the idea, however, along with his statements about the Panama Canal, Trump has become the most forthrightly expansionist president since William McKinley. Is this all about personal vainglory, as the left contends, or is there more substance to it? The answer is clear: Trump is once again being true to his America-First convictions.

His question to Trudeau was pointed, and remains unanswered: “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?” Trump asked Trudeau this question when the Canadian prime minister complained that the tariff Trump threatened to levy if Canada continued to do nothing to control its long border with the U.S. would destroy Canada. That’s where the Canada-as-the-51st-state jibe originated; it’s really all about Trump protecting American interests.

With the canal, it’s the same situation. Trump contends that we’re not being treated fairly. Politico reported that he “also said he would not let the canal fall into the ‘wrong hands,’ warning of potential Chinese influence in Panama.” Regarding Greenland, it’s once again the same story. Harvard International Review noted in an Aug. 2024 article that “while Greenland remains closely linked to Scandinavia as an autonomous region of Denmark, global powers such as the United States, China, and Russia are racing to extend military and economic influence in the region as it becomes more habitable.”

Here’s the bottom line: if the United States doesn’t control the Panama Canal and Greenland, China or Russia likely will, and the consequences could be severe both for the American economy and for national security. So while the leftist intelligentsia laughs at Trump’s revival of the Manifest Destiny imperative, there is, as is so often the case, a method to his madness. Trump is playing the great power game at a time when the left wants nothing more than for America to stand down and let China be the world’s great power. It’s yet another reason why leftists hate him so passionately.
