Hamas top dog: The Chinese are thinking of doing in Taiwan what the Al-Qassam Brigades did on October 7

Yes, the jihadis are masters of terror, so other bloodthirsty and inhuman entities want to imitate them.

“Hamas Leader Abroad Khaled Mashal: The Russians Told Us That Our October 7 Operation Will Be Taught In Military Academies; The Chinese Are Thinking Of Carrying Out A Similar Attack In Taiwan,” MEMRI, October 26, 2023:

Hamas leader abroad Khaled Mashal discussed the international impact of the October 7 attack on an October 26, 2023 show on Sada Elbalad TV (Egypt). He said that the Russians have benefited from the October 7 attack because it has been keeping the U.S. distracted from the war in Ukraine. Mashal continued to claim that the Russians have said that the attack would be taught in military academies. He further said that the Chinese are considering carrying out such an attack against Taiwan. In another part of the show, Mashal stated he hopes Hizbullah will fully join the war, and he added that it will make a “real difference.” He stated that Hamas is demanding this from its friends.

Khaled Mashal: “There is no doubt that if Hizbullah joins in, it would make a real difference. We hope that this happens, but the decision is theirs. Since the beginning of the Zionist aggression and this genocidal war, they have kept the enemy busy in the northern Palestinian front. They are clashing with the enemy and the battles are constantly escalating, but they have yet to evolve into a complete engagement and an all-out war, which would split the enemy and force it to fight on two or more fronts. We are still demanding [this] from Hizbullah and from our friends and nation.

[…]

“We want the Arab communities in the West to be active, and [we want] cooperation with superpowers like China and Russia. For your information, Russia has benefitted from our [attack], because we distracted the U.S. from them and from Ukraine. China saw [our attack] as a dazzling example. The Russians told us that what happened on October 7 would be taught in military academies. The Chinese are thinking of carrying out a plan in Taiwan, doing what the Al-Qassam Brigades did on October 7. The Arabs are giving the world a master class.”

Biden’s pact with Muslim Brotherhood-linked group Emgage, and his conundrum over Hamas’ war on Israel

In early 2020, the organization Emgage launched its Million Muslim Votes campaign in order to galvanize a million Muslim Americans to vote for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Emgage’s website stated: “The MMV campaign was our celebration and a reflection of our determination to build elections as a vehicle of change for our community’s political will.” The organization was reportedly a spectacular success in uniting Muslims voters, who turned out in unprecedented numbers in key battleground states, including Michigan and Pennsylvania. Emgage ultimately boasted that “in 2020 we helped turnout 1,087,086 registered Muslim voters. And we’re just getting started.” Emgage and Biden shook hands in a pact in which each made promises to the other. But in all pacts, there is a cost involved in fulfilling the promises; in this instance, the cost to Biden involved the reputation of Emgage, its network, how extensively it managed to infiltrate the administration, and what it all means now, given the fury by Muslims over Biden’s Israel stance.

As Israel battles Hamas, Frank Gaffney recently wrote that Biden:

engaged in outreach to one of his core constituencies: the Muslim Brotherhood. He met privately with five so-called ‘American Arab and Muslim leaders’ including: Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison; Wa’el Alzayat of Emgage, a political mobilization operation; and interfaith influence-operator Imam Mohamed Magid.’ Each has personal and/or organizational associations with the Brotherhood, a group whose Palestinian franchise, Hamas, perpetrated the horrific jihadist attack on Israel on October 7th.

Biden was in urgent damage control mode as Muslims become increasingly enraged over Israel. Take, for example, a Reuters headline: Biden’s Israel stance angers Arab, Muslim Americans; could jeopardize 2024 votesThe magnitude of Biden’s quandary is directly tied to the pact he made with Emgage. To appreciate this, a little history about Emgage is illuminating. According to Middle East Eye, one of Emgage’s first fundraising events “involved Keith Ellison, then a Congressional candidate from Minneapolis. That event in 2006 gave birth to the first iteration of Emgage as a PAC, an entity allowed to raise funds for political candidates. It also helped Ellison become the first Muslim in Congress.” In 2006, the Muslim voter advocacy group was not yet known as Emgage. It was filed as “Center for Voter Advocacy” by registered agent Khurrum Wahid, a founding member and currently the National Chair of Emgage Political Action Committee (PAC). Wahid is also an attorney “who has built his name on representing high profile terrorists”, and landed himself on a federal terrorist watch list in 2011.Discover the Networks names him as “one of the country’s most prominent terror lawyers.”

Emgage’s advocacy and hard work paid off as it rose to prominence during the 2020 election cycle, but the organization’s roots and those of its influential partners were already deep in the Democrat Party prior to the Biden win. Biden addressed the Emgage Million Muslim Votes Summit online in July 2020. This event featured the infamous Linda Sarsour; Emgage CEO Wa’el Alzayat, a decorated diplomat during the Obama administration and an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University (known for its “Islamophobia” “Fact Sheets”); Nihad Awad, co-founder and Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations; and Khurrum Wahid.

Ahead of the online summit, Emgage Action created an endorsement letter signed by several prominent elected Democrat Muslim officials, including Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Indiana Rep. Andre Carson. Wa’el Alzayat, whom Discover the Networks reports is “one of the country’s most prominent terror lawyers,” stated:

Joe Biden’s presence serves not only to galvanize Muslim Americans to cast their ballots, but to usher in an era of engaging with Muslim American communities under a Biden administration.

At the online Summit, Khurrum Wahid stated how Muslims felt “scapegoated and marginalized,” which led to the formation of Emgage. In his introduction of Biden, he revealed the Emgage mission and why Biden was the group’s best choice for President:

That is why we have endorsed you Mr. Vice President….that is why we have you here today. This is truly an historic moment for Muslim Americans…where a presidential nominee has engaged us in such a high priority. It shows us that you care about us and our values and the issues we care about. It shows us you believe in us. Mr. Vice President, I want you to know that we believe in you…You have moved forward funding to nations with large Muslim populations… and you’ve championed the inclusion of Muslim American institutions at the policy table. And we want to partner with you to fix the societal harm of this Trump presidency….We are behind you. We have a swing state strategy and we will deliver for you Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Florida. We will activate large groups of voters in Texas and Arizona…we will have everyone we know to vote Joe.

NPR hailed the event: “Presidential Nominees Rarely Speak to Muslim Audiences. Biden Did Monday.” The story noted that “3,000 people RSVP’d” for Emgage’s livestreamed event with Biden. “Biden focused on Islamophobia…. He didn’t mention terrorism or Islamic extremism.” He then told the audience: “One of the things that I think is important: I wish, I wish we taught more in our schools about the Islamic faith.” It was at this event where Biden promised: “If I have the honor of being president, I will end the Muslim ban on Day 1. Day 1.” Emgage made the pledge to capture more Democrat attention, where Wa’el Alzayat stated:

Emgage made it very clear that as part of our endorsement … we needed a direct engagement with Biden at a visible Muslim-led event. That was one of the clear criteria that we put out there…it’s no longer a question of whether Democrats will engage the Muslim community, but how.  There’s a recognition [in] places like Michigan that went to Trump by just 10,000 votes the importance of all these votes…According to our research, there’s about 150,000 registered Muslim voters in Michigan.

The pact between Biden and Emgage was now sealed with a tit-for-tat agreement: Biden serves the Muslim community, while Muslims deliver votes. According to the Washington Free Beacon:

Emgage has collaborated with a Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated group on events that in recent years attracted speakers who openly opposed LGBT rights and supported terror groups. Last year, Emgage became an official cohost of Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) conferences. ISNA was previously revealed to be part of the Muslim Brotherhood network.

ISNA and CAIR were both listed as unindicted co-conspirators during the Holy Land Foundation Trial. Both were deemed to be, or to have been, “part of the HAMAS social infrastructure in Israel and the Palestinian territories.”

Fast forward to March 2021, when NPR interviewed the Deputy Director of Emgage, Iman Awad, about Biden’s immediate repeal of the Trump travel ban and “what advocates want the Biden administration to do.” The mere question invoked an expectation that the incoming administration would be at the service of Emgage. This was not unreasonable, as it was exactly what Biden had established with Emgage during its summit. So Emgage was now poised to direct the new administration. As expected, the Left took up the cause. Politico reported after the fact that “nearly 1.1 million Muslim voters cast a ballot in the 2020 election, turning out in numbers large enough to swing the presidential race in key battleground states, according to a new report.” The report cited by Politico was that of Emgage itself; it describes its own political action committee (PAC)  as “the nation’s largest Muslim American bi-partisan political action committee that supports local, state, and federal candidates who share our vision of an inclusive and pluralistic America.” The group not only aims to dominate Muslim life in America, but also to represent the broader minority community under the banner of intercultural-interfaith dialogue.

On April 9, 2021, further damage to America’s security was becoming apparent, while Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ignored the real threat of jihad. He announced in a memorandum “the establishment of a Countering Extremism Working Group (CEWG) to spearhead the military’s continued effort to locate and stamp out ‘extremism’ in its ranks.” Austin consistently fails upward. During the Obama administration, he was in charge at US Central Command of the fight against ISIS in Iraq, “when that nation quickly fell to the terrorist group.” See more about his background HERE.

Under Austin, “no fewer than 6 of the CEWG’s 18 members were radical Islamists who viewed the United States as a racist cesspool.” Emgage CEO Alzayat was one of them.

By now, it should be clear to anyone what the ambitions of Emgage are to unite Islamic supremacists everywhere in America, while presenting patriotic Americans as “Islamophobes”; and influencing White House policy, both domestically and abroad. Emgage diligently aims to do nothing less than steer America’s direction as it works with its most powerful ally, the President of the United States. Working as a fifth column from the highest office, the group also has global ambitions, focusing (of course) upon Palestinian interests. Hamas is, after all, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, which a long list of unindicted co-conspirators with Hamas has enabled to operate through an expansive network throughout America. According to a recent news story, “Muslim American leaders, in private meeting, he needs to show more empathy toward Palestinians,” Joe Biden just hosted a core group of Muslim leaders in the White House. According to Frank Gaffney, former Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan and founder of the Center for Security Policy, Biden engaged “in outreach to one of his core constituencies: the Muslim Brotherhood.” The meeting included demands for an end to Israel’s defensive war on Hamas, although the participants called it a “ceasefire.”

Biden has now found himself between a rock and a hard place. He pledged to support the interests of Emgage and its network in exchange for votes. Yet America was shocked awake by Hamas’ ISIS-like attack on innocent civilians in Israel. Biden’s default mode now is remain as non-committal as possible, and even to engage in stalling tactics as he tries to keep his shaky coalition together. He appeals to humanitarian principles as he tries to keep his support base together: Muslims on the one hand, Jews on the other, and everyone in between, all while being forced to live up to expectations that the long history of American support for its ally, Israel, will continue.

The truth is becoming more apparent to mainstream America. The Democrats helped create the current crisis in the Middle East, as well as threats beyond that region). They emboldened Iran and helped fill its coffers through an outrageous deal that was based on lies and backroom deals. Consider more recent activity under Joe Biden:

  • It was discovered that Iranian spies have infiltrated the Biden administration.
  • The Biden administration’s Iran envoy Robert Malley helped “fund, support, and direct an Iranian intelligence operation designed to influence the United States and allied governments.”
  • Right before the Hamas attack on Israel, Iran seized upon a chance to get even more money from Joe Biden.
  • In an extreme act of insensitivity and even provocation to patriotic Americans, Biden announced the deal to send $6,000,000,000 to Iran in exchange for hostages on September 11, of all dates.
  • The Biden regime sent $148 million to Palestinian areas weeks before the attack on Israel.
  • The main goal of Biden’s Israel trip was to secure entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, not to help fortify Israel against its worst enemies.

And at the private meeting at the White House, Muslim leaders appealed to Biden for “more empathy toward Palestinians.” Among the guests was Emgage CEO Alzayat; the chief of staff of Muslim Brotherhood-linked Congressman Keith Ellison, who recently promoted a pro-Hamas “March for Palestine” rally in Minneapolis, at which demonstrators “called for Israel’s eradication” and used vulgar expletives to condemn Israeli “settlers”; and Imam Mohamed Magid, Executive Imam of All Dulles Area Muslim Society Center in Sterling, Virginia, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, and a big player in the “interfaith dialogue” network, serving as Chairman of International Interfaith Peace Corps. He was also recipient for the Washingtonian of the Year 2009 and the Human Rights Award 2005 from Fairfax County.

Biden now stands at a crossroads. He has pledged his support for Emgage in exchange for votes, and now the Emgage network has arrived to collect.  His public relations with Muslim Brotherhood players can only go so far now that Hamas is fully exposed. So far, Biden hasn’t been backed enough into a corner to pull a stunt that his neighbor Justin Trudeau favors in times of crises: conveniently disappear.

Maryland: Imam hails October 7 jihad massacre as a ‘great victory’

Abdel-Hady adds that given the demographics, Muslims will eventually be in control everywhere. The death of the West was largely by suicide, and one aspect of that suicide was a shift in values and perceptions, such that people began to think that having children was a liability and passing on their own traditions and heritage to those children a needless extravagance, or even an offense in light of our historical sins.

MEMRI excerpt:

“Maryland Imam Mahmoud Abdel-Hady: The Muslims and the Oppressed Will Eventually Be in Control of Things, Considering the Birth Rate of Muslims; October 7 Was a ‘Great Victory,’ Like the Viet Cong’s Tet Offensive,” MEMRI, October 21, 2023:

Mahmoud Abdel-Hady, the Imam of Maryum Islamic Center in Ellicott City, Maryland said in an October 21, 2023 lecture posted on the mosque’s YouTube channel, that eventually the Muslims and the people oppressed by Western countries “will be the ones in control of things.” He explained that this is because “we are a greater number,” and the way Muslims have children, they will be in the majority, because the Europeans are “in minus,” considering the number of children being born. He continued to say that the October 7 Hamas attack against Israel was a “great victory,” like the Viet Cong’s Tet Offensive, which he said led to the Americans leaving Vietnam.

Speaker Johnson: Hitting All the Right Notes, Annoying All the Right People

AP Photo/Alex Brandon

Top O’ the Briefing

Happy Monday, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. Kerwyllen was on a crusade to prevent the further normalization of ranch dressing, Pilates, and all things Kardashian.

We may only be a few days into the Speaker Mike Johnson era, but I am enjoying it so far. Sure, he’s a politician, and the whole thing will probably end up being a huge disappointment. That’s all the more reason to kick back and have fun while we can.

While the Democrats and their flying monkeys in the mainstream media were rending their garments over “CHAOS” in the House, conservatives out here in the hinterlands were mostly just annoyed that the impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden was simmering on the back burner. For a lot of people, the “business of the House” at present should be focused on getting to the bottom of how the Biden Crime Family works. We don’t know how long this Olsen Twins-thin GOP majority in the House is going to last, after all.

The good news, as Matt writes, is that Speaker Johnson is ready to roll on that front again. The best news from Matt’s post is that the new speaker says the Republicans aren’t interested in the kangaroo court antics of Democrats:

Johnson said Republicans are far more concerned about evidence.

“I know people are getting anxious and they’re getting restless and they just want somebody to be impeached,” he explained. “But that’s not — we don’t do that like the other team. We have to base it upon the evidence, and the evidence is coming together. We’ll see where it leads.”

I think we know where it’s going to lead.

One way to get a read on a relatively unknown politician is to see what’s triggering his or her political enemies.

For example, as Bonchie writes over at our sister site RedState, Johnson’s Christianity is making the lefties dyspeptic. That’s right, America, Mike Johnson is one of those Jesus people. How ever will the Republic survive this?!?!?

Bonchie’s post focuses on the remarks of commie faux journo David Corn, but others have echoed his scary Christian nonsense. Predictably, most of it revolves around abortion. They’re disappointed that the GOP didn’t find the depraved secular light and elect a rabidly pro-abortion speaker. The Dems and their media mouthpieces are having fits because they’re now stuck with a man of faith who believes in the sanctity of life being only two heartbeats away from the presidency.

As proof of how desperate the Left is to baselessly smear a guy who they know almost nothing about, Twitchy has a story about a Biden 2020 hack trying to start a narrative about Johnson being gay.

Ah, the nonjudgemental tolerance of American leftists.

If we’re giving Mike Johnson a report card based on his agenda and the knee-jerk reactions that he is forcing from some of the worst people in America, he gets “A”s all across the board.

If this is the end result of Republican chaos in the House, I wouldn’t mind if they get the itch to be chaotic again real soon.

Israel’s President: ‘The Hamas Attack Does Not Represent Islam’

Gee, that’s swell. Where are the Muslim leaders saying it?

SEE: https://www.frontpagemag.com/israels-president-the-hamas-attack-does-not-represent-islam/;

[Make sure to read Robert Spencer’s contributions in Jamie Glazov’s new book: Barack Obama’s True Legacy: How He Transformed America.]

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog had some reassuring news for the world on Thursday: the appallingly ghastly and brutal Hamas attack on Israel doesn’t represent Islam. Herzog thus becomes the latest in a long, long line of non-Muslim leaders who are quick to assure us that the latest atrocity has nothing, nothing whatsoever, to do with what we all know and love as the warm and cuddly religion of peace.

Herzog gave us this marvelous news as he visited the southern Israeli town of Rahat and met with local officials as well as with what Israel National News called “heads of Arab local authorities in the Negev and public representatives of the Arab-Jewish war room – which helps families affected by the war.” Herzog declared: “We sincerely sympathize with the grief of the entire Arab public and the Bedouin society in particular. That’s marvelous. Now: does the Arab public and Bedouin society in particular sympathize with the grief of Israeli Jews? No doubt some do, but some don’t, and Herzog didn’t say anything about that possibility.

Instead, the ceremonial leader was anxious to sound a conciliatory note, continuing: “I tell the world that this is not a war of Jews against Muslims. It is a war between the people of light and the people of darkness, between good and evil, between doing good and doing bad, this is the war.” Well, yes, and no, Herzog. It is indeed a war between good and evil, but in this case the evil side is a classic example of what Isaiah the prophet warned about: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” (Isaiah 5:20) The people who carried out the massacre in Israel on Oct. 7 believe that the creator of the universe has ordered them to “kill them wherever you find them,” (Qur’an 2:191, 4:89, cf. 9:5), even if you have toparaglide into a music festival to do it.

Those people certainly believe that they are fighting a war of Muslims against Jews. Does Herzog really do anyone any good by denying this? On Oct. 18, the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Religious Affairs posted guidelines for preachers in mosques that quoted this hadith: “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.” (Sahih Muslim 2922)

That is, President Herzog, a war of Muslims against Jews. This tradition is often described as an end-times prophecy, but it is actually a call to murder Jews so that the last hour will be hastened in coming. Certainly, not all Muslims believe in it, or in its applicability to the current situation, but blithely to ignore its existence and pretend that no Muslims at all believe in it is dangerously naïve.

Dangerously naive is just how Herzog sounded when he said: “We will all continue to live together, and it is important for me to say to the entire Arab society in Israel, how much I appreciate the responsibility and the functioning of the Arab society in these difficult days.” That’s terrific, but once Israel is out of this phase of the jihad that is intent on destroying it, Israeli officials should not shy away from investigating and confronting the loyalty to that jihad within Arab Israeli communities and emphasizing the necessity of loyalty to the state in which they hold citizenship.

Herzog also said: “But we must remember that the struggle is not really a struggle of a political nature, it is about our ability to live here in a Middle East of peace, as opposed to a Middle East of bloodshed and war. He said that the slaughter of Oct. 7 “made no sense,” ignoring the sense it makes as fulfillment of what are perceived to be divine commands written in the Qur’an.

Herzog concluded: “I will make another comment that you will accept with love. What we saw on October 7th does not represent Islam. Islam is a religion with a lot of respect sensitivity love and brotherhood. This represents an unimaginable evil that must be eliminated. Yet why is it, if this were true, that we do not see Muslim leaders condemning Hamas’ attacks? Why is it always non-Muslim leaders who constantly assure us that Islam is peaceful?

The answer is that those leaders are speaking out of ignorance and political calculation. The problem with that is that insofar as that political calculation is based on ignorance, it is doomed to fail.

The CCP-Mideast Terror Connection

Why do we know so perilously little about it?

SEE: https://www.frontpagemag.com/the-ccp-mideast-terror-connection/;

Republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, & research purposes.

It’s long been known that the Soviet Union was deeply involved in collaboration with and training of Middle Eastern Islamic terror groups, like the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Much of this was learned from Ion Mihai Pacepa, former chief of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Romania, who defected to the U.S. in 1978, when he walked into the U.S. Embassy in Bonn, West Germany.

The “Mitrokhin Files” added even more information about Russian sponsorship of Islamic terror. Vasiliy Mitrokhin was a KGB archivist who defected to the West in 1992, bringing out with him a treasure trove of secret documents.

Far less, however, is known about connections between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Middle East Islamic terror leaders. Mohammed Deif is Hamas’ top military commander in the Gaza Strip; he heads the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades. He is currently one of the most hunted men on earth, as Israeli commandos search for those responsible for the horrific October 7 attack against Israel that targeted, raped, abused, killed, and mutilated over 1,400 Israelis and nationals of other countries as well.

In addition to state-of-the-art weapons technology and possible assistance with an onslaught of cyberattacks against Israel, China reportedly also played a role in the education of Mohammed Deif.

According to reporting from Chinese dissident journalist Lu De, human rights activist and reporter Jennifer Zeng, the New York Postand secret documents obtained by the Lude Media network, the PLO sent Mohammed Deif to China in 1996 where he was enrolled in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)’s Ordnance Engineering College in Shijiazhuang, China.

There he studied Artillery Technology. The CCP even provided Deif with a Chinese wife in 1998; she is a Dongxiang Muslim from China’s northwest province of Gansi, and their wedding was attended by officials of the CCP’s International Liaison Department.

A nurse, she was Deif’s third wife and also an interpreter for Deif and the PLO in China at the time. The pair returned to Gaza in 2000. Although Deif and his Chinese wife reportedly lost contact with the CCP after the 9/11 attacks, she reached out to the CCP in 2006, seeking to re-establish ties.

After suffering the loss of one leg in an Israeli air strike in 2014 that killed another of Deif’s wives and two children, she returned to China in 2015 to obtain a prosthetic leg before coming back to Gaza once again in 2019. She is reported to have maintained direct ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping ever since, providing an ongoing Hamas conduit for communications with Beijing.

At the latest count, 32 Americans were murdered in the October 7 Hamas attack against Israel. More than 1,400 Israelis and some 61 nationals of other countries were also murdered. Over 200, including Americans, are believed to be hostages of Hamas.

In close collaboration with the Iranian regime and other Hamas leaders, Mohammed Deif was the military mastermind of these attacks. And in perfect synchrony with Gazan and other Islamic media sources, the Chinese media, including social media, began spewing out incendiary antisemitic, anti-Israel invective almost immediately, claiming that Israel was carrying out indiscriminate attacks against Gazan civilians.

It is clear for all to see at this point that the CCP operates in close partnership with Iran, Russia, and Islamic terror groups like Hamas against the U.S. and our ally, the Jewish State of Israel.

While the Biden administration has expressed staunch support for Israel — and is delivering a steady stream of needed humanitarian and military assistance to it — President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken must also forthrightly call out the regimes in both Iran and China for their collaboration in the worst attack against the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

World War III is Here and We’re Losing It

While we wait for a big war that may never come, we’re losing the little ones.

[Make sure to read Daniel Greenfield’s contributions in Jamie Glazov’s new book: Barack Obama’s True Legacy: How He Transformed America.]

World War III is everywhere and nowhere. Politicians and pundits predict it and warn about it as they’ve been doing for 70 years. And for all of that time, we’ve been fighting World War III.

Is WWIII in Iran or Ukraine? Yes in its own way. Is it in the confrontations in the South China Sea, the Hamas attack on Israel, or the riots in the streets of our own cities? Also all yes. Not to mention cartels smuggling drugs and foreign influence operations being run in D.C.

And it’s in a thousand other incidents and crises, some that make the news and some that don’t, but that are all around us and others that have long become part of our history. It’s all WWIII.

“I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones,” Einstein was quoted as saying. But Albert was as good at physics as he was bad at politics and he had it the wrong way around. It’s WWIII that‘s fought with stones.

The atomic bomb, but not just it, had ended world wars as we knew them. Even more decisively than Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the United States had conclusively demonstrated that nations with superior production capacities combined with manpower and technological advancement will win any world war. For the Soviet Union, a world war against the country whose factories had supplied it with everything it needed to beat the Nazi war machine was unthinkable.

Instead the Soviet Union launched its own third world war fought not with atom bombs, but in some cases with stones and sticks, but mostly a political war that depended on spreading Communism, building third world alliances, and subverting America from within. It won that war even as its politics and economics imploded, finally leading to the fall of the Soviet Union.

While the United States was the last man standing in the Cold War, after paying a bloody price from Korea to Vietnam to the Middle East, it had inherited a world order shaped by the USSR. America had built multinational institutions, beginning with the United Nations, that had been hijacked by what we, in less politically correct times, would have called ‘subversives’.

Asia, Latin America and the Middle East were dominated by socialist and nationalist movements that had been allied with the Soviet Union and shaped by its Communist ideologies. All that the fall of the USSR did was cut off some of the funding. It also encouraged China to step into Russia’s place as a much more credible peer rival to the United States and the West.

But it wasn’t China that picked up the Soviet mantle: it was the Islamists, many of whom we had nurtured as anti-Communists. From Iran to the Muslim Brotherhood, they were the ones with a global vision, a knack for running secret organizations and a murderous belief system that was just as compelling to its adherents as Communism was to its acolytes earlier in the 20th century.

While most people still think of WWIII as some grandiose phenomenon in which nuclear weapons will rain from the sky leaving behind a poisonous wasteland filled with lurching zombies, the real world war was being fought before many of us were born. WWIII does look like Ukraine, but it also looks like Vietnam and like Iran bombing the Marine Barracks 40 years ago. And it’s also China stealing our technological secrets and barraging us with propaganda.

WWIII is small scale and deep. It’s compact proxy wars that fall short of a nuclear exchange. It’s information warfare that exploits our weaknesses. and It’s ideological, economic and social. Instead of nuclear explosions, it’s narrow territorial conflicts, it’s influencers on social media spreading lies and it’s hacking attacks. It’s death by a thousand cuts rather than one big smash.

The winners and losers of the first two world wars were conditioned by their history to think of a world war as something apocalyptic, but WWIII as it is now is being fought by nations and movements that were on the sidelines or bit players in those conflicts, but who have absorbed the post-war strategies of those wars that terrorism, guerrilla warfare, influence campaigns, economic warfare and limited hostilities are better tools of ju-jitsu against great powers.

The WWIII that so many imagined never came because we were the victims of our own success. With or without nuclear weapons, no one wanted to fight an unrestricted global war against us so they found ways to undermine us, to tie us down and small wars to drag us into. They focused on undermining our morale, fracturing our society, turning our youth against us, corrupting our morals, buying out our economy and invading us through immigration.

While we still keep waiting for a big war to begin, our enemies have been winning it. World War III is here and we’re losing it because we don’t see what’s going on around us as a war.

And so we never really fight back.

A world war plays to our strengths and our enemies, from the Soviet Communists of the Cold War to the Chinese Communists of today, from the local and international Marxist and Islamist coalitions, prefer to exploit our weaknesses. We may have the strongest army, but the worst internal security. There is nothing stopping foreign enemies from robbing us, ripping us off or just walking across the border. We hate the idea of war so we bribe our enemies to leave us alone, to return our citizens that they have taken hostage, and to win their hearts and minds.

Why try to tangle with an Abrams tank or an A-10 when you can bribe our politicians, corrupt our universities and fund terrorist groups to attack us around the world. That’s the real WWIII.

Americans have a weakness of thinking that history begins and ends, that it explodes outward in world-changing events, when history is just a record of the things going on around us. The world wars were not abrupt cataclysms that divided the past and the future, they were extensions of events that had been underway. War has a way of marking periods in time, but the absence of great wars is not an absence of history: it just means that they are being fought by other means.

Our unhealthy obsession with World War III has all too often blinded us to what is going on around us. We did not take Islamic terrorism seriously because our enemies seemed too small and backward. And we only view small wars in terms of their risk of exploding into big wars as if the only wars that really matter are the ones that might lead to the ‘Big One’.

Instead of fighting a war as we imagine it to be, we need to be ready to win the ones we’re in.
