China Blasts US over Reports that Large Scale US Forces are Stationed in Taiwan
TAIPEI, Taiwan — China reiterated calls for the United States to cut off military ties with Taiwan on Friday in a cautious response to reports that U.S. Marines have been stationed on the self-ruled island for more than a year to strengthen its defenses against intensifying Chinese aggression. Asked about the reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian avoided attacks on Washington, instead, repeating standard Beijing talking points that the United States should recognize the “high sensitivity” of the issue and halt military contact with Taiwan. “China will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
