President Joe Biden's administration said on Sunday that commercial aircraft would be used to help ferry people who have been evacuated from Afghanistan.

The move highlights the difficulty the administration is having in carrying out the evacuation of American citizens and at-risk Afghans.

A Pentagon spokesman said the 18 aircraft, including from United, American Airlines, and Delta, would not fly into Kabul but would be used to transport people who have already been flown out of Afghanistan.

This would be only the third time the "Civil Reserve Air Fleet" has been activated. The first time was during the Gulf War in 1990 and then during the invasion of Iraq in 2002.

The first occurred in support of Operations Desert Shield/Storm (Aug. 1990 to May 1991), and the second was for Operation Iraqi Freedom (Feb. 2002 to June 2003).

The United States and other foreign countries including Britain have brought in several thousand troops to manage the evacuations of foreign citizens and vulnerable Afghans, but have stayed away from the outside areas of the airport.

U.S. officials told Reuters that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin weighed whether the move would have an impact on the airlines' commercial operations.

"The (Defense) Department does not anticipate a major impact to commercial flights from this activation," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

But limited numbers of aircraft is just one of the issues facing the evacuation. Officials are frustrated with the slow processing being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security and State Department.

There is also increasing concern about security in Kabul, where roughly 5,800 troops are protecting the airport.

Afghanistan: Taliban shot, stabbed, and gouged out eyes of pregnant woman because she had a job

“Women, under Sharia law, are not permitted to work.”

Sharia also sanctions violence against women: the Qur’an teaches that men are superior to women and should beat those from whom they “fear disobedience”: “Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.” — Qur’an 4:34

Muhammad’s child bride, Aisha, says in a hadith that Muhammad “struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: ‘Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you?’” — Sahih Muslim 2127

An another hadith states: “Rifa`a divorced his wife whereupon `AbdurRahman bin Az-Zubair Al-Qurazi married her. `Aisha said that the lady (came), wearing a green veil (and complained to her (Aisha) of her husband and showed her a green spot on her skin caused by beating). It was the habit of ladies to support each other, so when Allah’s Messenger came, Aisha said, ‘I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women. Look! Her skin is greener than her clothes!’” — Sahih Bukhari 7.77.5825

“Shot, stabbed Afghan woman whose eyes were knifed out by Taliban says they ‘torture us,’ feed remains to dogs,” by Sarah Taylor, The Blaze, August 19, 2021:

An Afghani woman by the name of Khatera says that the Taliban will not respect or honor women’s rights despite the terrorist group’s assertions otherwise.

In a Monday interview with India’s News18, Khatera, 33, recalled the horrific attack that took place in 2020 when her father — a former Taliban fighter — tipped off the Islamist militant group that his daughter was employed.

Women, under Sharia law, are not permitted to work.

In October, Khatera said that her father, who remains unnamed at the time of this reporting, purportedly conspired with the Taliban to stage an attack on her as she returned home from work one day.

During the attack, Khatera — who worked for the police at the time — was shot at least eight times, stabbed, and had her eyes knifed out of their sockets before Taliban fighters left her for dead.

She was pregnant during the horrific attack.

“It’s tough for the world to imagine what we built in the past 20 years,” she told the outlet. “We built dreams. Now they are gone. It’s all over for us. Women who work with the government or police were being hunted and threatened even before the Taliban had taken over the country. Now, the concern has gone beyond letting women work. At this point, I am scared if they would leave these women alive. They don’t just kill women — they make animals feed on their bodies. They are a blot on Islam.”

Khatera said that the Taliban does not view women as “living, breathing human beings,” but “merely some meat and flesh to be battered.”

“[The Taliban] first torture us and then discard our bodies to show as a specimen of punishment,” she said. “Sometimes our bodies are fed to dogs. I was lucky I survived it. One has to live in Afghanistan under the Taliban to even imagine what hell has befallen on women, children, and minorities here.”…

Poland deploys troops along Belarus border to combat Muslim ‘migration warfare’~Lithuania building wall to ‘protect border of democracy’ from surge of Muslim migrants

Poland and other Baltic nations are accusing the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, of sending migrants across their borders and “of using the migrants as instruments in a hybrid war.”

Despite the history of jihad, and the extensive information available about Islamic conquest — which includes stealth invasion via immigration and massive birth-rates — Western globalists continue to fall into the trap of open borders. Jihadists routinely infiltrate refugee streams, and although it is often repeated that jihadists are only a few Muslims, this assertion is misleading. There are Islamic nations that fund jihad, and Islamic nations that persecute religious minorities in the name of Islam. These are major issues; so are surveys that demonstrate widespread Muslim support for the Sharia, which is central to Islam. The majority of Muslims do support Sharia — which according to mainstream Islam is divine and irrefutable.

Sharia and democracy are incompatible. A flood of Muslim migrants will change the values of non-Muslim societies over time. We already see this happening with the “Islamophobia” subterfuge in operation at every turn in Western countries now. Free speech is the cornerstone of all democracies and free societies; yet criticizing Islam has become in the West an “offense” worthy of punishment. Western freedoms are being chipped away, amid bad policies that failed to protect Western values.

Kudos to Poland for defending its democratic republic. The Polish Defense Ministry stated that he “government´s priority is the safety of Polish citizens.”

In 2017, “thousands of Catholics formed a human chain along the borders of Poland on the anniversary of an historic victory by Europe over the Ottoman Empire officially to pray for peace and ‘against the Islamisation of Europe.'”

“Poland Deploys Troops to Belarus Border to Combat Migration Warfare,” Associated Press, August 18, 2021:

WARSAW, Poland (AP) – Poland has deployed hundreds of troops and is laying barbed wire along its border with Belarus to stop the arrival of migrants seeking to enter the country, officials said Wednesday.

Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said more than 900 Polish troops were involved in the border operation. It’s believed that most of the migrants trying to cross over from Belarus are originally from Iraq, with some from Afghanistan and Syria as well.

Poland, like the Baltic nations of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, accuse the authoritarian government of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of sending migrants across their borders, which also form part of the European Union´s eastern border.

A deputy interior minister in Poland, Maciej Wasik, tweeted images of rolls of barbed wire laid along the border. The Defense Ministry said that barbed wire now runs for nearly 100 kilometers (60 miles) of the 418-kilometer (260-mile) Poland-Belarus border and that enough to cover another 50 kilometers most vulnerable to illegal border crossings would be installed soon.

The Defense Ministry said Wednesday that 2,100 people tried to illegally cross the border so far this month. Of those people, border guards prevented 1,342 from entering Poland and 758 “were detained and imprisoned in closed centers.”

“The government´s priority is the safety of Polish citizens,” the ministry said in a statement. The government, which is led by the right-wing Law and Justice party, “has been opposed to illegal and uncontrolled migration from the outset” and believes the migrants trying to get in from Belarus “maybe pose a threat to our citizens.”

Two lawmakers from the opposition party Civic Platform party brought blankets, sleeping bags and food to a group of some 50 people trapped in a no-man´s land between Poland and Belarus on Wednesday. They called on the Polish government to ensure the group was given humane treatment.

Poland and the Baltic nations accuse Lukashenko of using the migrants as instruments in a “hybrid war.” They believe his government has acted in retaliation to EU sanctions imposed on Belarus following Lukashenko’s reelection last year in a vote which the West saw as rigged, as well as for harsh repressions of Belarusian protesters….

Lithuania building wall to ‘protect border of democracy’ from surge of Muslim migrants

Kudos to Lithuanian leaders. Lithuania is a tiny country which has stood up for its citizens, amid serious globalist bullying. The term “border of democracy” perfectly describes what all Western countries faced with illegal border entries should have erected years ago to protect their citizens. No reasonable person has historically opposed responsible immigration and refugee assistance, but open-borders mass migration is a different phenomenon that strips immigrants of all responsibility to their new country. Such a system provides a free-for-all opportunity for jihadists and the worst criminals. Yet such policies have been advocated by globalists who are enabling the red/green axis of Marxists and Islamic supremacists.

Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens of the West are forced to adhere to a different set of rules, including strict border controls, especially during the coronavirus lockdowns. Lithuanian leaders have exposed the character of Western leaders who have failed to act to protect their country’s best interests, even some who call themselves conservatives, such as UK’s Boris Johnson government.

“Exclusive: ‘Border of Democracy’ – Lithuanian MP on Why Country Is Building a Wall to Stop Illegals,” by Kurt Zindulka, Breitbart, August 15, 2021:

A Lithuanian MP has told Breitbart News that her country will stand firm in protecting the “border of democracy” as Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko continues to attempt to weaponise illegal migration against the European Union.

This week, the parliament in Lithuania declared a “state-level extreme situation” in regards to the growing migrant crisis, in which some 4,000 illegal aliens — mostly from Iraq — have crossed the border between Belarus and the small EU member-state.

The Lukashenko regime has been accused of actively facilitating migrants from Africa and the Middle East crossing the border, with many seeing it as a response to the EU sanctions imposed on the former Soviet bloc nation in June.

In response, the Lithuanian parliament voted in favour of erecting a border fence with Belarus this week.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart London, Lithuanian MP Dovilė Šakalienė said: “We are not living in one big state, there are states and there are borders.”

“We have to protect ourselves because this is the border of democracy. Our eastern border is the end of the EU and the end of democracy,” she said.

Šakalienė said that the scale of illegal migration into Lithuania, which has increased fifty-fold over 2020, with some 4,000 illegal migrants crossing the border, demonstrates that “this is not a natural migration”.

“Through surveillance, we see that the Belarusian border force is actively assisting migrants to come to the Lithuanian border,” she said, backing up claims from the European Union’s border agency, Frontex, which claimed to have drone footage proving Lukashenko’s regime has been facilitating the illegal crossings of the border.

Poland, another EU member-state bordering Lithuania and Belarus, has also seen record border crossings from the latter in recent days, mostly of Afghans and Iraqis.

Following the sanctions imposed on Belarus by the European Union after Minsk used a warplane to force a Ryanair flight to Lithuania to land in the country to arrest a prominent critic of the government, the Lukashenko regime has been accused of flying in migrants from Iraq in order to flood the border.

Šakalienė said that “so-called tourism agencies” in Iraq have been advertising “European excursions” for thousands of dollars per migrant, promoting the “lie” from Lukashenko that there is no border between Belarus and Lithuania.

“When these people come, they are in a mousetrap because of course our border is secure and they cannot pass. It’s easier for migrants to understand what’s going on if there is a border fence, that it was deceit, they were defrauded by Lukashenko’s regime that there are no walls and that they can enter the European Union.”….

War Is Over, But Now Leftists Want Reparations to Taliban

BY ROBERT SPENCER

republished below in full unedited for informational, educational & research purposes:

Richard Burgon, a member of the British Parliament for the far-Left Labour party and Secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, demonstrated Tuesday that the Left’s commitment to the redistribution of wealth is indefatigable: He declared that what the West really needs to do now is start forking over money to the Taliban. Burgon tweeted: “The crisis in Afghanistan is the result of 20 years of disastrous military intervention. Just as in Iraq & Libya, backing US-led invasions led to a huge loss of life. There is no military solution in Afghanistan. The focus now should be on reparations and supporting refugees.”

Yes, reparations. Paying reparations to Afghanistan would essentially mean funding the Taliban, which has a billion-dollar budget as it is and has no need of the largesse of British or American taxpayers. And Burgon is not alone. Britain’s far-Left Stop the War Coalition issued a statement Sunday demanding that the British government “take a lead in offering a refugee programme and reparations to rebuild Afghanistan, an act which would go a great deal further in advancing the rights of the Afghan people, women in particular, than continued military or economic intervention in the fate of the Afghanistan.”

The call for reparations to the Taliban has been heard on this side of the Atlantic as well. Shabana Mir, an associate professor at American Islamic College in Chicago, first implied that Afghanistan didn’t need any help from the West: “The Western savior narrative vis-a-vis Afghanistan is a framing of Afghanistan as in need of Western help, as dependent on Western help — rather than as a Western-exploited and Western-ravaged people and land.” Then, however, she added: “The U.S. owes s**tloads of reparations to Afghanistan.” The U.S. should have no say in how this money is used: “I have hopes that Afghans can build, if military contractors and the U.S. would get the hell out of the way.”

Meanwhile, far-Left Canadian “journalist” Paul Jay believes that “there must be significant reparations paid to the Afghan people to be administered by the U.N.” Another Leftist “journalist,” Spencer Ackerman, who was primarily responsible ten years ago for getting all mention of Islam and jihad removed from U.S. counterterror training, asked: “What do we owe the Afghan people? We owe them a life they can live, resettling them in the United States if they so choose, and we owe them reparations. Reparations is a charged word, and I do not use it here to suggest that reparations for the descendants of the enslaved ought to wait until we pay reparations for the War on Terror. I mean here that throughout history, the losers of wars have had to pay reparations, though typically to the regimes and not people. But it is people whom the U.S. owes, not regimes.”

Great. But anyone who realistically appraises the situation for longer than five seconds (yes, that leaves Leftists out) will understand that any attempt to aid the Afghan people at this point will have to go through the Taliban, and the Taliban is likely to have other priorities altogether. If Biden’s handlers are crazy enough, and they may well be, to start sending “reparations” to Afghanistan, the Taliban would likely use the money the way the Islamic Republic of Iran used the billions in cash that Barack Obama sent it: to strengthen its military forces and to finance global jihad terrorism. This is why protesters in Iran recently chanted “Not Gaza, not Lebanon, the money for Iranians”: They’re tired of seeing their nation’s wealth used to aid jihad activity abroad while the Iranian people are suffering. The Taliban, which is just as committed to the global jihad as the Iranian mullahs are, would likely use any Western largesse in the same way, and with the same indifference to the plight of their own people.

Even aside from that, the idea of paying reparations to the Taliban is as insane as the idea of paying reparations is in other contexts. The American people (and the British) have already paid exorbitant amounts in taxes to finance the Afghan military misadventures, which dragged on for twenty years in the absence of a clear mission or goal. Now, are they to be bled dry even more to finance a rebuilding of Afghanistan that the Taliban is unlikely to undertake? Will the Afghan people then pay the U.S. reparations for the Taliban’s aiding of al-Qaeda in preparing for the 9/11 attacks? Once one starts down this road, it never ends. The history of the world is full of wars and conquests; the history of Islam is full of the conquest and subjugation of various populations of infidels. If we’re going to start talking about reparations, it would be only fair to include reparations to the victims of 1,400 years of jihad. That reparations bill would dwarf any payment the West supposedly owes to the Taliban.

U.S. Military Rescues 169 Americans Trapped in Kabul Hotel

A nugget of good news from Afghanistan today: U.S. forces rescued 169 Americans who had been in hiding in a hotel in Kabul and brought them safely to the Kabul airport. It’s believed to be the largest such rescue beyond the grounds of the airport to date.

The Americans had gathered at The Baron hotel in Kabul, a designated meeting point for evacuees in the city. Originally, the Americans were going to walk 200 yards from the hotel to the airport gate. U.S. commanders didn’t like the look of the crowd at the gate so they dispatched three Chinook helicopters to pick up the Americans.

NDTV:

Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby downplayed the incident.

“They were very close to the perimeter of the airport. Very close,” he said, adding later that they had been airlifted from the Baron hotel, near the airport, by three US Chinook helicopters.

The helicopters had been deployed due to concerns for the Americans’ safety in traversing a huge crowd that had gathered outside the airport’s Abbey entry gate.

“There was a large crowd established outside the Abbey Gate, a crowd that not everybody had confidence in, in terms of their ability to walk through it, and so local commanders on the scene took the initiative and flew these helicopters out there to pick them up,” Kirby said.

The hotel rescue was gratifying but hardly significant. While the number of Americans still trapped in Kabul is unknown, it’s believed to be at least 5,000 and perhaps as many as 15,000. And there are as many as 20,000 Afghans who either have visas or desperately want them because they worked with the U.S. military.

Related: Will the Taliban Save Joe Biden’s Presidency?

Scenes like this are only going to get worse.

So far, according to the Pentagon, just 7,000 Americans and Afghans have been evacuated.

CNBC:

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. William “Hank” Taylor said that while the U.S. military can airlift approximately 5,000 to 9,000 people a day out of Kabul, that figure is dependent on “who is on the airfield, ready to leave a holding area and get on the aircraft.”

More than 2,000 people were evacuated on C-17 aircraft in the past 24 hours, Taylor said. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby estimated that about 300 of the passengers were Americans. Kirby told reporters Thursday he does not know how many U.S. citizens are left in Afghanistan.

Not all the Americans in Kabul want to leave. Some are spouses of Afghan civilians. Others work for NGOs and charities. But there is no way the U.S. military is going to be able to fulfill Joe Biden’s promise to evacuate everyone who wants to leave. The Taliban are not going to have unlimited patience and unless our military is allowed to go beyond the airport perimeter and start picking up Americans for transport home, the chances for a safe and orderly evacuation are non-existent.

Biden Administration Sent Out Thousands of ‘Bogus’ Visas to Americans in Afghanistan

The proof of the Biden administration’s incompetence keeps piling up in the wake of the botched Afghanistan withdrawal. According to a report from Newsweek, Biden’s State Department sent out thousands of “bogus” generic visa documents to Americans in Afghanistan to help them get out of the country,

David Fox, who runs a marketing company in Kabul, said he received an email from the U.S. Embassy’s consular services department that included the document, meant to help U.S. citizens and Afghan citizens eligible for Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) to leave the country.

Fox noted that the document looks like a U.S. visa, except it had no name, serial number, or barcode on it.

Clearly, the Biden administration didn’t consider the most obvious result of such a foolish move.

“And what do you think happened when these people received a document like this that has no name? Of course, they printed out a thousand copies,” Fox said. “You have tens of thousands of Afghans who now have this kind of ridiculous, bogus document that the State Department created.”

Related: U.S. Left Behind as Russia, China Rise in Central Asia

“I don’t know how else to explain something like this except for brain worms,” Fox added. “I mean, it’s absurd. What were they thinking?”

While several Biden administration officials have claimed that they prepared for every contingency, this rank incompetence proves again how unprepared they were for what happened, and this poorly thought-out remedy shows they’re flying by the seats of their pants trying to fix the situation… and making things worse.

A spokesperson for the State Department confirmed to Newsweek that it sent the documents to potential travelers in Afghanistan.

Thousands of Afghan citizens and Americans have descended upon the airport in Kabul in the hopes of fleeing the country.

State Dept. Issues Terrifying Alert a Day After Biden Said Americans Could Safely Get to the Kabul Airport

On Thursday Joe Biden called an indefinite lid on making public remarks or appearances and reportedly left Washington and went to Delaware.

Then he abruptly changed course and delivered an address from the White House. He also took a small number of questions live from the media for the first time since the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, to the Taliban. He has given one interview, to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, but that was a trainwreck despite ABC’s effort to cut out some of the most disturbing parts.

None of Biden’s actions since Afghanistan started rapidly deteriorating last weekend indicate stability or his administration’s confidence in his ability to lead or even comment on the situation. Every time he has thus far — last Monday, Wednesday, and then Friday — he has made the situation worse.

During Friday’s brief press conference a reporter asked Biden about the ongoing issue of Americans stranded in Kabul, and whether he would authorize the military to go out and rescue any. There have been reports that while our military is not proactively rescuing stranded Americans around the besieged city, British and other allied military forces are rescuing their stranded citizens.

Here is how that exchange went.

Q    Thank you, Mr. President.  Two questions for you.  The military has secured the airport, as you mentioned, but will you sign off on sending U.S. troops into Kabul to evacuate Americans who haven’t been able to get to the airport safely?

THE PRESIDENT:  We have no indication that they haven’t been able to get — in Kabul — through the airport.  We’ve made an agreement with the — with the Taliban.  Thus far, they’ve allowed them to go through.  It’s in their interest for them to go through.  So, we know of no circumstance where American citizens are — carrying an American passport — are trying to get through to the airport.  But we will do whatever needs to be done to see to it they get to the airport.

That was Friday. After the president’s speech, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told members of Congress that she believed things were going well in Afghanistan and the stranded should just get to the airport.

A day later the U.S. State Department has issued the following warning to Americans stranded in Kabul.

Event:  Because of potential security threats outside the gates at the Kabul airport, we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a U.S. government representative to do so.

U.S. citizens requesting assistance in departing the country who have not yet to completed the Repatriation Assistance Request for each traveler in their group should do so as soon as possible.  Spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens in Afghanistan who are awaiting immigrant visas should also complete this form if they wish to depart.  Do not call the U.S. Embassy in Kabul for details or updates about the flight. This form is the only way to communicate interest in flight options.

We will contact registered U.S. citizens as the security situation changes to provide further instructions.

Actions to take:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially in large crowds.

  • Follow the instructions of local authorities including movement restrictions related to curfews.

  • Have a contingency plan for emergencies and review the Traveler’s Checklist.

  • Monitor local media for breaking events and adjust your plans based on new information.

  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program(STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.

“…we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and avoid the airport gates at this time…”

In remarks the stranded Americans may have been able to watch, Joe Biden told them the opposite just a day prior, and Pelosi told the same to Congress — that they could and should go to the Kabul airport.

Among the questions before the nation now is whether Biden lied during his remarks on Friday, whether advisors are not telling him the truth of the situation, or whether he simply cannot retain or recall current, relevant facts. All of these possibilities are in play since the White House keeps trying to hide Biden for some reason or set of reasons.

Consider this. During his brief press conference on Friday, a reporter asked about the blistering reactions of U.S. allies in response to his handling of Afghanistan. Biden said he had heard of no criticism from U.S. allies.

What’s your message to America’s partners around the world who have criticized not the withdrawal, but the conduct of that withdrawal, and made — made them question America’s credibility on the world stage?

THE PRESIDENT:  I have seen no question of our credibility from our allies around the world.  I have spoken with our NATO Allies.  We’ve spoken with NATO Allies — the Secretary of State.  Our National Security Advisor has been in contact with his counterparts throughout the world with our Allies, as has the General — or, excuse me, I keep calling him a General, but my Secretary of Defense.

The fact of the matter is I have not seen that.  Matter of fact, the exact opposite I’ve got — the exact opposite thing is we’re acting with dispatch, we’re acting — committing to what we said we would do.

Just a day before that, the British Parliament held Biden in contempt. Members of Parliament across the political spectrum including the current and former prime minister castigated Biden by name for criticizing the Afghan military and for abandoning Afghanistan — and for his failure to consult with the British and other NATO allies. They openly questioned whether NATO itself should be restructured so that the United States would play a reduced role in it, or no role at all.

Has Biden really not heard any of this? Has he not been briefed on this? Is he unable to process and remember it?

Or is he just lying about it?

Biden’s Bungle: U.S. General Tells British Special Forces Commander in Kabul to Stop Rescuing Your Citizens

U.S. General Reportedly Tells British Commander in Kabul to Stop Rescuing People Because They're Making the U.S. Look Bad

It’s white-knuckle time in Kabul for any American trying to get to the safety of the airport. The Biden administration is being understandably tight-lipped about it, considering the volatility of the Taliban, but that doesn’t matter to the thousands of U.S. civilians staying in their homes and praying the Taliban don’t get to them. They just want to go home with their heads firmly attached to their necks.

According to the Washington Examiner’s Tom Rogan, British special forces have been making heroic efforts to rescue not only British citizens but Americans as well. But the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division has told the British commander of their special forces to cease operations outside the airport perimeter. Apparently, it was making the U.S. military look bad.

I understand that the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division has told the commander of the British special forces at the Kabul airport to cease operations beyond the airport perimeter.

Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue has told his British Army counterpart, a high-ranking field-grade officer of the British army’s 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, that British operations were embarrassing the United States military in the absence of similar U.S. military operations, according to multiple military sources. I understand that the British officer firmly rejected the request.

Rogan says the British officer “firmly rejected the request.”

This show of rare tension between the U.S. and British command groups in Kabul reflects three factors.

First, it shows the obvious stress of attempting to extricate thousands of personnel under a situation of increasing terrorist threat. Elements of the Haqqani network, the Islamic State in Afghanistan, and possibly al Qaeda are now operating in proximity to Kabul airport with some degree of command separation from the Taliban.

Indeed, according to the Voice of America, the bloodthirsty, hostage-taking Haqqani network has been put in charge of security at the Kabul airport.

It also raises the prospect of al-Qaida being welcomed back to Afghanistan, they fear, which would break promises made by Taliban leaders during diplomatic talks in Qatar with U.S. officials last year, not to allow the country to again become a safe haven for foreign jihadists.

On Thursday, Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of Afghanistan’s National Reconciliation Council, a body of notables and elders involved in the Qatar talks, met with Khalil al-Rahman Haqqani and his entourage in Kabul. Abdullah later indicated publicly that Khalil al-Rahman Haqqani would be overseeing security in the Afghan capital and had provided assurances that he would “work hard to provide the right security for the citizens of Kabul.”

The Haqqani network has been allied with al-Qaeda since the 1990s and has close ties with the Taliban. Who is the Taliban trying to fool by putting them in charge of airport security? The Haqqanis have been kidnapping Americans for more than a decade.

As Rogan points out, the British have a lot more operational leeway in Afghanistan than our troops.

I understand that the SAS has conducted operations to bring American citizens, as well as British citizens and at-risk personnel, through checkpoints and to the airport. This is not an indictment on U.S. capabilities or special operations intent, but rather, it’s a reflection of political-military authorities. In part, this difference is understandable. Large-scale U.S. military operations beyond the Kabul airport perimeter would entail significant risk absent prior Taliban approval. But there is a sense, at least by allies, that the U.S. military could be doing more to leverage the Taliban into providing greater ease of access to the airport for those most at risk.

That’s one way of addressing the situation; have Americans lay low and wait for the situation to stabilize while directing the military to leave as small a footprint as possible so as not to attract attention to the U.S. presence.

Ordinarily, that would be a sound strategy — no need to antagonize enemies holding knives at the throats of your people.

But there’s nothing “ordinary” about the Taliban, Haqqani network, or al-Qaeda. If they believe that Biden won’t retaliate if they begin kidnapping and/or executing Americans, they will do it.

Forbearance is a virtue but weakness can be deadly. Let’s hope the Taliban have a lot of the former and Biden doesn’t have much of the latter.
