Delaware Democrats on Tuesday nominated Sarah McBride, a transgender rights activist, for a State Senate seat, advancing her bid to become the nation’s highest-ranking openly transgender elected official.

Ms. McBride, 30, defeated a token primary challenger and is widely expected to win the November general election — the Wilmington-based seat is safely Democratic and is being vacated by Harris B. McDowell III, who is retiring after representing the district for 44 years.

Ms. McBride said in an interview that she wanted her victory to inspire others. “My hope is that this result can help reinforce for a young kid trying to find their place in this world, here in Delaware or anywhere else in this country, that this democracy is big enough for them, too,” she said.

“Right now in America, we are seeing voices that for so long were pushed to the margins and to the shadows finally being heard,” she added.

Ms. McBride is no newcomer to national or local politics. In 2012 she became the first openly transgender person to work at the White House when she was an intern during President Barack Obama’s administration. She later lobbied the Delaware state legislature on behalf of a transgender rights bill, which was signed into law in 2013, and is now a national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest L.G.B.T.Q. civil rights group.

In 2016 she became the first transgender person to speak at a major party’s national convention when she took the stage before Democrats in Philadelphia.

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. — a towering figure in Delaware politics, and now the Democratic presidential nominee — wrote the foreword to Ms. McBride’s 2018 book about her fight for transgender equality.

“Sarah is the epitome of what can make an elected official great,” said Alphonso B. David, the Human Rights Campaign president. “Tonight, she takes the first step on what I expect to be a storied career in the public realm.”

Battles over transgender rights have played out in state legislatures across the country, with conservative lawmakers in more than two dozen states introducing anti-transgender measures this year.

“My identity and the symbolic ramifications of my elections, that doesn’t come up” in conversations with voters, she said. “What comes up is that we need creative and courageous leadership that will meet this moment with meaningful action for people’s lives.”

Democrats also renominated Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, a 10-year-incumbent, for a second full term. Mr. Coons turned back a progressive challenger, Jessica Scarane, who never attracted the kind of financing or enthusiasm that propelled other liberal candidates who took on centrist Democratic incumbents this year.

Ms. Scarane had hoped to tap into the enthusiasm that launched progressive challengers to victories over veteran Democratic congressmen in Chicago, St. Louis and the Bronx. But Delaware’s 2020 Senate race never became a cause célèbre on the left.

A poll conducted last month by a confederation of progressive organizations considering investing in the race on Ms. Scarane’s behalf found Mr. Coons leading by 40 percentage points, a margin sufficient to dissuade them from spending money to help Ms. Scarane.

Mr. Coons still took the race seriously and used an enormous fund-raising advantage to blanket Delawareans with television ads, spending nearly $800,000 compared with Ms. Scarane’s $65,000. The only third-party organization to devote significant resources to the race was the American Chemistry Council, which aired more than $200,000 in ads backing Mr. Coons.

Mr. Coons will next face Lauren Witzke, whom Delaware Republicans nominated on Tuesday. Ms. Witzke has posted a QAnon slogan on Twitter, making her the latest winner of a G.O.P. primary to have dabbled in the conspiracy theory. She is not expected to be competitive against Mr. Coons in the general election.

Ms. Scarane, who moved to Delaware from New York 10 years ago, did not have the profile of other left-wing upstarts who have toppled incumbent centrist Democrats. Progressive organizations had first sought to recruit a woman of color to support in the race. Kerri Evelyn Harris, a Black progressive organizer, gave Delaware’s other Democratic senator, Tom Carper, a brief scare in 2018 before Mr. Carper prevailed by nearly 30 percentage points.

That’s ridiculous. I’m a free speech absolutist, but there is no doubt that no one has the freedom or the right to call for harming other people. This man is supposed to be a doctor, but what will he do if he has a Jewish, Zionist, or Christian patient? He should not just be fired from New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital; he should be barred from practicing medicine immediately.

For the past two years New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital has been trying to fire a doctor with a history of posting anti-Semitic and violently anti-Israel messages on social media.

Next week, the hospital and Dr. Walid Khass will be back in court to address the doctor’s eight-year history of tweets denigrating Jews and calling for Israel’s destruction.

Before Khass was hired as a resident at the hospital, his reputation for virulently anti-Israel social media activity was known.

As far back as 2012, Khass tweeted “My beloved Palestine! Spit on you, Jew dogs!” His tweets continued as a medical student until his graduation from St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in June 2019, reported Canary Mission, a watchdog organization that tracks anti-Semitism on campuses….

On August 1, 2014, Khass tweeted: “quran chapter 2 take not the christians and the jews for friends — I’m Muslim And Know This.”

On November 13, 2014, Khass tweeted: “Go Beat Up A Zionist, You’re Not You When You Don’t Beat Up A Zionist.”

His tweets are also racist including one on July 10, 2015, in which he said: “Israel Needs To Stop Payin Ethiopians To Pretend That They’re Jewish Just So They Can Have A Bigger Population.”

On February 9, 2017, Khass tweeted: “Trump Trust Me, The Only People Ruining Our Country Is The Zionist Israeli’s …. #FreePalestine.”

The Canary Mission website lists at least 57 tweets by Khass that call for violence, spread anti-Semitism, support the Hamas terror group, and spread hatred of Israel and calls for its destruction.

The Holocaust generation who lived through the horror and those that fought in the war to end the atrocities are almost all gone. Will the memory of the greatest crime in history go with them?

It seems incredible but a generational ignorance about the Holocaust is taking hold and threatens to make hollow the promise of our fathers and grandfathers never to allow such evil to exist ever again. The evidence is startling, appalling. A survey commissioned by the  Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany discovered a radical deficiency in knowledge of the recent past by young Americans ages 18-39.

Guardian:

Almost two-thirds of young American adults do not know that 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and more than one in 10 believe Jews caused the Holocaust, a new survey has found, revealing shocking levels of ignorance about the greatest crime of the 20th century.

According to the study of millennial and Gen Z adults aged between 18 and 39, almost half (48%) could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto established during the second world war.

The ignorance is deliberate. We know that schools teach a curriculum that includes a survey of the events of the 1930s and 40s. We know that schools also teach specifics about the Holocaust. The Holocaust is part of popular culture — movies, plays, even YouTube videos.

If they don’t know about the Holocaust, how little must they know about Stalin’s Ukrainian famine, the Khmer Rouge, and Mao’s mass murders?

How is this possible?

Almost a quarter of respondents (23%) said they believed the Holocaust was a myth, or had been exaggerated, or they weren’t sure. One in eight (12%) said they had definitely not heard, or didn’t think they had heard, about the Holocaust.

How to reverse this trend?

“The results are both shocking and saddening, and they underscore why we must act now while Holocaust survivors are still with us to voice their stories,” said Gideon Taylor, president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) which commissioned the survey.

Taylor added: “We need to understand why we aren’t doing better in educating a younger generation about the Holocaust and the lessons of the past. This needs to serve as a wake-up call to us all, and as a road map of where government officials need to act.”

The ignorance may very well be a by-product of the information age. Young people are bombarded with messages, news, hype, ads — information of every kind. This has resulted in young people become quite discerning in the kinds of messages that are accepted and understood. When your face is stuck on your smartphone for most of your waking life, anything longer than 140 characters is usually dismissed.

The information is out there — all over the place. It’s not hiding. It’s not subliminal. It’s right in front of them — the horrific images, the testimony, the evidence.

But they don’t see it because they don’t want to see it. It’s not connected to their lives. And since they have no memory of it, it simply doesn’t exist.

We may have to rethink the entirety of our system of education. If kids and young adults are changing the way they learn, we are going to have to change the way we teach.

Until Bill Gates invents a Krell Mind Machine that can transfer knowledge to young people’s brains effortlessly, a way is going to have to be found to fight through the everyday clutter that kids have to deal with and impart essential and meaningful truths.

 

IS THE CDC DOWNPLAYING THE EFFICACY OF HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE TO “RESIST” TRUMP?

As PJM’s Stacey Lennox noted yesterday, Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Caputo recently warned on Facebook live that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “was harboring a ‘resistance unit’ to Trump.”

Caputo alleged that career scientists “haven’t gotten out of their sweatpants except for meetings at coffee shops” to plot “how they’re going to attack Donald Trump.”

“There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president,” Caputo added.

While the media has tried to present Caputo as unhinged, could he actually be right? Is it actually possible that there are experts at the CDC who are more concerned with “resisting” Trump than public health?

I think the answer lies in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) from September 4. Titled, “Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine Prescribing Patterns by Provider Specialty Following Initial Reports of Potential Benefit for COVID-19 Treatment — United States, January–June 2020” which details the increase in hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine prescriptions this year. The report is largely just a detailed analysis of the number of prescriptions this year but not-so-discreetly included in the report is the following claim in its summary:

“Earlier this year, [hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine] were widely reported to be of potential benefit in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. However, current data indicate that the potential benefits of these drugs do not outweigh their risks.”

Excuse me?

The most commonly cited claim against hydroxychloroquine (echoed in the CDC’s MMWR) is fatal heart damage, which was reported in two bogus studies, the debunked VA study, and another flawed study in Brazil from April. But as veteran virologist Steven Hatfill explained, the media never mentioned that the Brazilian doctors in that study “were giving their patients lethal cumulative doses of the drug.”

Two other studies followed linking hydroxychloroquine to higher mortality, but those studies were based on faulty data, and two well-respected medical journals had to retract one of them.

Back in April, it was noted that countries with high rates of malaria have significantly lower COVID-19 mortality rates. Hydroxychloroquine is a decades-old anti-malaria drug.

But CDC’s claim that “current data indicate that the potential benefits of [hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine] do not outweigh their risks” contradicts the plethora of data we have to the contrary.

There have been nearly a hundred studies on the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine, most of them peer-reviewed, which indicate that hydroxychloroquine has a positive impact on mortality, particularly when administered early.

A study published last week out of Saudi Arabia found that “Early intervention with HCQ-based therapy in patients with mild to moderate symptoms at presentation is associated with lower adverse clinical outcomes among COVID-19 patients, including hospital admissions, ICU admission, and/or death.”

Another study published earlier this month of nursing home patients found that patients not treated with hydroxychloroquine found that those receiving standard treatment had a mortality rate more than five times higher than those who were treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.

In July, a large-scale, peer-reviewed study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System concluded that hydroxychloroquine successfully lowered mortality rates for hospitalized coronavirus patients.

There are currently about a hundred studies on the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19 (61 of them peer-reviewed) that overwhelmingly show positive results, particularly when administered early.

Yet, according to the CDC, “the potential benefits of [hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine] do not outweigh their risks.”

Yeah, okay.
