Following the massive demonization of ‘MAGA kid’ Nick Sandmann for the crime of smirking, some of his supporters pointed out startling parallels to George Orwell’s 1984, in which citizens were persecuted for committing “facecrime”.
Even after video footage proved that Native American Nathan Phillips walked straight into the middle of a group of Covington High School teens and was not “mobbed” by them as the media had claimed, Sandmann was still crucified for smirking during the encounter.
In victimizing Sandmann over a facial expression, leftists are mimicking Big Brother’s treatment of dissidents who committed “face crime” in Orwell’s fictional dystopian classic.
Orwell writes about face crime in Part 1, Chapter 5 of 1984;
“The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself—anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called.”
Another comment in relation to the book points out that a “person committed a face crime if he had a politically incorrect expression on his face at any time.”

In essence, that’s precisely what Sandmann was persecuted for since he merely stood his ground and adopted an expression, at no point attempting to provoke or get in Nathan Phillips’ face.
As we document in the video below, innumerable leftists also had Twitter meltdowns over Sandmann’s expression alone, claiming that it represented bigotry and white privilege.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Liberal New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who has decried what he calls “extreme conservative” politicians who impose on the people by law “their view of what God says should be done,” has signed into law a bill that expands abortion access in the state, allowing babies to be killed during the third trimester if they are not expected to survive or if they are deemed to threaten the health or life of the mother.
The Reproductive Health Act passed the state Senate 38-24 and the Assembly 92-47 on Tuesday—the day marking the 46th year of Roe v. Wade—and was quickly signed into law the same day by Cuomo, who was joined during the signing ceremony by Sarah Ragle Weddington, the attorney who had represented Roe before the Supreme Court.
As previously reported, Roe, who later came forward as Norma McCorvey, admitted in her 1994 book “I Am Roe” that her case was a lie, outlining that she made up the claim that she had been raped at the advice of her feminist attorneys to make her effort more convincing.
McCorvey also never obtained an abortion, but put her daughter up for adoption and went on to become a vocal pro-life advocate, even going to court in an effort to overturn the ruling.
“My decisions were wrong and I am fighting with every breath to change what has occurred,” McCorvey, who died in 2017, said in 2008.
Cuomo praised Waddington during his speech, and also presented her with an award for “public service,” telling her “God bless you” as he kissed her on the cheek.
“In many ways, Sarah, what you did is what we as a collective try to do. You made such a difference in your life. You’ve been such an example for so many. Rarely has such a precedent been so powerful for so long,” he stated. “And they way you did it, taking on all the odds—you couldn’t write a better story or heroism or courage or leadership.”
“Sarah, that is such a beautiful public service. That is such a precedent that had driven laws all across the nation,” Cuomo remarked.
He told those gathered that the event that he believed the bill was necessary because he feared that Roe v. Wade would be overturned by the Supreme Court and that he needed to “protect our state.” As previously reported, Cuomo had refused to sign the budget bill this coming April without the passage of the Reproductive Health Act.
“We should not be here in the first place. We should not have a federal government that is trying to roll back women’s rights,” Cuomo stated. “This administration defies American evolution. We’re supposed to be moving forward. We’re supposed to be advancing. We’re supposed to live and learn. We’re supposed to be growing.”
He again called for the presentation of a ballot initiative, which would codify what he called “a woman’s right to control her own body” in the New York Constitution. The constitutional amendment would be in addition to the legislation that he signed Tuesday evening, so as to prevent any efforts to restrict or do away with abortion in the state by future leadership.
Cuomo claimed that the issue is a matter of “equality,” comparing it to his efforts for “marriage equality.”
“This has been too long coming, and it has been too obvious and too unfair. Women’s equality in the law and in the constitution for all,” he stated, generating applause.
According to video footage posted online, the Senate chambers broke into standing cheers and applause after the bill was passed.

One World Trade Center was also lit pink overnight to celebrate the passage of the so-called Reproductive Health Act, according to Joseph Spector of the Albany Democrat & Chronicle.
In addition to allowing babies to be aborted at any time if they deemed non-viable or if the mother’s health or life is stated to be jeopardized, the legislation also removes protections for babies who survive attempted abortions and eliminates language from criminal statutes that would prosecute an individual for acts that result in the death of an unborn baby. Non-physicians will additionally now be permitted to perform abortions.
“The legislature finds that comprehensive reproductive health care, including contraception and abortion, is a fundamental component of a woman’s health, privacy and equality,” the bill reads. “Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures performed in the United States; the goal of medical regulation should be to improve the quality and availability of healthcare services.”
Groups such as New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms were among those who actively opposed the legislation, while also acknowledging that it would likely pass due to the Democratic control of the state legislature.
“New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms opposes the Reproductive Health Act in the strongest possible terms. We respectfully call upon members of the legislature to summon the courage and compassion to vote against it,” it wrote in a Memorandum of Opposition.
Among its numerous concerns, the organization lamented the legislation’s expansion into the “health” of the mother, which it believes is a broad term that could be utilized for virtually any reason. It pointed to the 1973 Supreme Court case of Doe v. Bolton, which determined that “medical judgment may be exercised in the light of all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age—relevant to the well-being of the patient. All these factors may relate to health.”
As previously reported, former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop once outlined that the life or health of the mother is never a reason for an abortion as doctors will simply deliver the baby in order to save both lives.
“Protection of the life of the mother as an excuse for an abortion is a smoke screen. In my 36 years of pediatric surgery, I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother’s life,” he said. “If toward the end of the pregnancy complications arise that threaten the mother’s health, the doctor will induce labor or perform a Caesarean section.”
“[The doctor’s] intention is to save the life of both the mother and the baby,” Koop continued. “The baby’s life is never willfully destroyed because the mother’s life is in danger.”

Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron were booed during the signing of a treaty that takes another giant leap towards establishing a European army.
Video footage shows the two leaders posing for photographs in Aix-la-Chapelle, Germany earlier today as a chorus of jeers can be heard in the background.
According to Sputnik, “the treaty will reportedly strengthen the existing ties between Germany and France, in particular, in the fields of economic, foreign and security policy, education and culture, research and technologies, climate and environment, as well as cooperation between border regions and civil societies” and “is intended as a step towards a European army”.
The European Union is moving towards an EU army despite repeated assurances down the years that such a scenario would never happen.
Macron continues to pursue globalist policies despite his popularity sinking to a paltry 23% and France being beset by violent protests for almost two months.
The signing of the treaty solidifies Angela Merkel’s commitment to globalism.
During an event aimed at combating populism entitled Parliamentarism in the Tension of Globalization and National Sovereignty last year, the German chancellor brazenly said that “nation-states should be willing to give up their sovereignty today” and this should be done via an “orderly process”.
“There were [politicians] who believed that they could decide when these agreements are no longer valid because they are representing The People,” she said.
“[But] the people are individuals who are living in a country, they are not a group who define themselves as the [German] people,” she stressed.

Oxfam International released a report on January 21 asserting that governments worldwide are under-funding public services and failing to clamp down on tax dodging, policies that Oxfam blames for increasing the gap between rich and poor. 
Winnie Byanyima, the executive director of Oxfam International, said in a statement quoted by Reuters: “Poor people suffer twice from being deprived of basic services and also paying a higher burden of taxation.”
Billionaire fortunes increased by 12 percent last year, or a collective $2.5 billion a day, while the world’s 3.8 billion poorest people saw their wealth drop a collective $500 million every day, Byanyima stated.
“People across the globe are angry and frustrated,” said Byanyima.
The charity maintains that tax rates for the rich and corporations have been cut in recent decades. When governments fail to tax the wealthy, they pass the tax burden on to poor people through consumer levies such as the value added tax (VAT), Byanyima said.
“An indirect tax like that, that taxes salt, sugar or soap, the basics that people need … then poor people pay relatively more out of their income than rich people,” she said.
The VAT to which Byanyima refers is a common feature in counties outside the United States, especially in European countries, whose tax systems tend to be more socialistic than that of the United States. 
The New American noted in 2010 that a VAT “is difficult to escape through normal tax evasion strategies and would force the 50 percent of people in the poor and middle classes who pay no income taxes at present to start to contribute to the ever-increasing costs of the nanny state.”
Though Oxfam and other charities are to be commended for providing help to the poor, the question remains as to whether the income gap between the rich and the poor is due to lack of “fairness,” or other factors. A 2015 article in The New American (Is “Income Inequality” Unfair?”) discussed how “income differences can be the result of something other than capitalist greed, racism, sexism, union busting, gluttonous stockholders, globalization, imports, automation, or the grasping shenanigans of the top 1 percent.” The writer concluded, “a key reason that high-income families have higher earnings than low-income families is that they largely work more…. There are more workers working more hours in high-income families, on average, than in low-income families.”

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is building a $99-million supercomputer that will give the agency the “unprecedented ability to track the lives and transactions of tens of millions of American citizens,” tax expert Daniel Pilla reports.



The IRS is already dangerous enough, notes Pilla. “The IRS lays claim to your data without court authority more so than any other government agency. And to make matters worse, they share the data with any other federal, state or local government agency claiming an interest, including foreign governments.”



The IRS already receives billions of tax documents annually, and the amount of information the agency receives continues to grow. According to the IRS’ 2018 – 2022 Strategic Plan, the agency’s data volume increased a hundredfold between 2007 and 2017, while the number of users with access to that data grew by a factor of 23.



But that’s not enough for the IRS, which states in its Strategic Plan that it wants “to increase its access to data, and use that data more effectively to drive its agency-wide decision making, as well as case evaluations and selections for enforcement purposes,” pens Pilla. Thus, the agency is investing $99 million in a contract with Palantir Technologies of Palo Alto, California, to provide hardware, software, and training to “capture, curate, store, search, share, transfer, perform deconfliction, analyze and visualize large amounts of disparate structured and unstructured data.”







Specifically, Palantir is tasked with building and training IRS employees to use a supercomputer to “search, analyze, visualize, and interact with a wide variety of disparate data sets so users will be able to leverage the platform to perform advanced analytics, such as link, pattern, statistical, behavioral, and geospatial analysis on an investigative platform that is scalable and interoperable with existing IRS equipment and systems.”



Under the terms of the contract, writes Pilla, the system has to meet the following criteria:



Allow for the rapid ingestion of massive amounts of data.



Users should be able to immediately use the imported data in the imported format to perform queries, analysis and identify links.



Allow users to drill down on massive amounts of disparate data to find connections.



Allow users to visualize connections from millions of records with thousands of links by grouping data visualization by the commonalities and roles.



The dangers of such a supercomputer in the hands of the IRS should be obvious, but in case they aren’t, Pilla spells them out:



This would allow the IRS to meaningfully link tens of millions of tax returns, billions of information returns, and trillions of bank and credit card transactions, phone records and even social media posts. For example, if a U.S. citizen moves money from a Swiss bank to some other offshore bank, then uses credit or debit cards to spend the money in the U.S., Palantir’s software can link those transactions. It could also flag a person whose tax return shows relatively low annual income but whose social-media posts indicate something entirely different.



In other words, the IRS would have what it needs to squeeze every last penny — and then some — out of every taxpayer. That is precisely what the agency wants to do to create its so-called “up-front tax system.” “Under that system,” says Pilla, “the taxpayer is essentially removed from the tax preparation process because the IRS knows everything there is to know about your personal, business and financial affairs to the point where the agency prepares the return for you.”



Needless to say, all this data in the hands of the IRS will make future abuses of that agency’s power even more likely. Think how much simpler it will be for the IRS to target groups that use unapproved terms like “Tea Party” or are associated, however tangentially, with disfavored persons or organizations, when all it has to do is run a query over its zillions of interconnected electronic records. Add to that the fact that the number of users with access to the data is growing by leaps and bounds, and the opportunities for personal score-settling and data breaches abound.



The IRS’ ongoing quest for omniscience needs to be thwarted as soon as possible, preferably by abolishing the abominable agency before it becomes too powerful 

to confront.

An individual can worship God alone effectively if he is so inclined, but a congregation must be led. That is why God has ordained leaders and has set forth high qualifications for them. 

It is true that the New Testament does not spell out the position of song leader or music director, but the Old Testament plainly sets forth this pattern and there is no need to restate it in the New. God tells us that the Old Testament is for our example today (Romans 15:4). 

The song services are too important to be given into the hands of just anyone who happens to be available. Like everything else, we pray for God to raise up the right people for this ministry. To look around and find no one qualified for a ministry is an opportunity to pray to God in faith that He will supply the needs of His house.

We look for those who have the spiritual qualifications required of all church workers, plus they need to understand music and, ideally, have some ability to play a musical instrument. We also look for leadership ability. The song leader must be a leader. He might not be a pastor, but he is a leader of the song service.

I spend a lot of time and effort training song leaders in our missionary work, and the heart of the material I use is found in this report. 

The Bible teaches us that God loves spiritual singing. The largest book of the Bible is a song book. 

Jesus will sing in the congregation in the kingdom (Heb. 2:12). He is the Creator of the human voice. He is the Creator of singing. How wonderful it will be to hear the Man of men sing! 
Lessons about Singing in the Old Testament
David was a skilled musician who created musical instruments with which to praise the Lord (1 Ch. 23:5). He established an elaborate music service in the tabernacle. See 1 Chronicles 15:16-24. There are many lessons in this passage. The musicians were appointed (v. 16). They did not choose their own position. They lifted up their voices with joy (v. 16). There were both singers and instruments (v. 16). They used many instruments: cymbals (v. 19), psalteries (v. 20), harps (v. 21), trumpets, (v. 24). Note that there were no drums. The singers and musicians were instructed (v. 22). They were skillful (vv. 21, 22). God deserves the very best, and God’s people must always aim to be as skillful as possible in His service. 

Before his death, David prepared for the music program in the temple. See also 1 Chronicles 25:1-7. We see similar lessons here. They gave thanks and praised the Lord (v. 3). The singers were under direction of leaders (vv. 2, 3, 6). They ministered the Word of God in music (v. 5). They were instructed and trained (v. 7). They were skillful (v. 7). They prophesied with instruments (vv. 1, 2, 3). I believe that this shines light on 1 Corinthians 14:24, which describes a church service in which “all prophesy.” In this passage, prophesying is defined as speaking to “edification, and exhortation, and comfort” (1 Cor. 14:3). The saints can prophesy in many ways: by preaching and teaching, by singing from the heart, by playing musical instruments skillfully unto the Lord. 

Solomon established the music ministry in the temple. See 2 Chronicles 4:12-13. They played as one (v. 13). There was unity and harmony rather than confusion. This requires a lot of skill and practice. 

Hezekiah re-established the music ministry. See 2 Chronicles 29:25-30. This was after the temple had been shut by Ahaz (2 Ch. 28:24). We see that the music service in the tabernacle and temple had been commanded by God (2 Ch. 29:25).

There will be music ministry in the millennial temple (Eze. 40:44; Psa. 108:1-3; 147; 149; 150). In that day, the whole creation will praise the Lord. Singing to the glory of God will be heard everywhere (Isa. 35:2, 10; 51:11; Jer. 31:12)

In ancient Israel, the music associated with the worship of Almighty God was carefully prepared and skillfully performed with godly oversight. 

All too often the church’s song service is led by individuals who know almost nothing about what they are doing, who lack the skill, enthusiasm, and spirituality to do a good job and aren’t interested in getting a proper education to improve their ministries.

No wonder many are tempted to move to a church that has an enthusiastic contemporary worship service. No wonder young people often think of church as dull. I received an e-mail recently from a woman who informed me that her family left an independent Baptist church that was lifeless and that they are now happy members of a lively, contemporary Southern Baptist congregation. That’s too bad, but I wonder how many people have turned away from the truth because it was presented in a lifeless, incredibly boring manner! 

A doctrinally correct church that is dull, half-hearted, half-dead, and mediocre does not glorify the Lord. God’s people are instructed to do everything heartily (Col. 3:23). 

In fact, if a church is truly lifeless and boring, it is not a real Christ-centered Bible church, in my estimation, because Jesus Christ and the Bible are the most exciting “things” on earth!
Lessons about Singing in the New Testament
Ephesians 5:18-20

This verse describes the kind of church that can offer acceptable worship to God in song. 

(1) The members must be filled with the Spirit (v. 18). This means to be surrendered to the Spirit, to be controlled by the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit. It is talking about obedience to God and submission to God’s authority in one’s life. 
(2) The members are to speak to one another in song (v. 19). “Yourselves” is plural. The song service is for ministering to one another by the message of the song. 
(3) The members are to make melody in their hearts (v. 19). The singing is to be from the heart, with understanding, with spiritual zeal, not a religious ritual. 
(4) The singing is to be “to the Lord” (v. 19). The people must direct their hearts to the Lord in a conscious way. The singing is “to the Lord” in the sense that it is for His glory, and it is “to the Lord” in the sense that the words are directed to Him. 
(5) The church is to be thankful (v. 20). The thanksgiving is to be directed to the Father through the Son. The Father is the source of all blessings, and the Son is the channel of the Father’s blessings. 

Colossians 3:16

This verse further describes the kind of church that can offer acceptable worship to God in song. 

(1) The Word of God must dwell richly in the believers’ lives. This must be every church’s goal. It is done by good teaching and preaching that builds the people up in God’s Word, by leading the people in Scripture memorization, and by helping each believer to be an effectual Bible student. 
(2) The Word of God must dwell with wisdom, meaning that God’s people must understand the Scripture and it must get down into their daily lives and bring forth holiness and spiritual wisdom. 
(3) The Word of God is to be taught. Every believer is to be a teacher (Heb. 5:12-14). One of the purposes of the singing is to teach one another through the message of the songs and hymns. 
(4) The members are to sing with grace in their hearts. This is the grace of salvation. The church must be careful about receiving members, looking for true salvation. 
(5) The people are to sing to the Lord. The singing is not only for teaching one another, it is addressed to the Lord. Every song should be sung for the Lord, and some songs are sung directly to the Lord. Everything is to be done for His glory and pleasure.

If a church is young and the congregation small, it is understandable that there might not be proper musicians and song leaders. No one expects a young church to have everything that a more established church has. Under such conditions, the church must do the best it can with what it has and beseech God for growth. We are referring here to churches that could do better in this matter but don’t simply because it is not a priority. They are content with mediocrity and dullness.
1. PROPRIETY
The song leader should dress properly according to the situation. If he is leading in a church service, he is leading in the most important forum on earth. The church is the house of God, the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Tim. 3:15), and if men “dress up” for anything, they should dress up for the formal assembly of God’s people in God’s house. People dress up for visits to the White House and meals at classy restaurants and formal weddings and professional orchestra concerts, but the contemporary philosophy promotes a “dress down, be casual” approach to church. We don’t believe that it honors God.

2. LEADERSHIP
Good song leaders lead rather than follow. Many song leaders seem to think that their job is simply to announce the song numbers and sing along with the congregation. But that’s not leading. A robot can do that. A song leader’s job is to lead, and that entails many things. 

The song leader should lead by explaining what the song service is all about, not with lengthy expositions but with brief and hearty comments and instructions.

He should lead by teaching the people how to sing properly unto the Lord.

He should lead by very briefly explaining the message of difficult songs. 

He should lead out with his voice. We would note that when the song leader stops singing during a hymn, it is distracting to those who are following. He shouldn’t stop singing unless absolutely necessary, such as a cough. 

He should lead by his enthusiasm. 

He should lead by encouraging the people to sing. A great many church members either barely sing or don’t sing at all, and that is wrong. God’s people need to be taught that the song service is not for the individual. It is not something that each person decides whether or not to participate. The song service is for the Lord. It is supposed to be an act of worship. To not sing or to half-heartedly sing during congregational singing is dishonoring to the Lord. We are to sing to one another and to the Lord (Col. 3:16). How can you obey that if you don’t sing out heartily? 

He should lead by introducing variety into the services, and in many other ways. 

It is said that “everything rises and falls on leadership,” and there is great deal of truth to that. 

Consider the following examples from the Psalms. Note how the Psalmist exhorts the people to sing and praise God with him. He does not berate or scold. He encourages and instructs and leads, reminding the people why they should praise the Lord.

“Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness” (Psalm 30:4).

“O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Psalm 34:3).

“Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding” (Psalm 47:6-7).

“Exalt the Lord our god, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy” (Psalm 99:9).

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands” (Psalm 100:1).

“O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works” (Psalm 105:1-2).

“Praise ye the Lord, O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 106:1).

“Praise ye the Lord. Praise, O ye servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord” (Psalm 113:1).

“O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. For his merciful kindness is great toward us; and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord” (Psalm 117:1-2).

‘Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the name of the Lord; praise him, O ye servants of the Lord” (Psalm 135:1).

“Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely” (Psalm 147:1).

“Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints” (Psalm 149:1).

“Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. … Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord” (Psalm 150: 1, 6).

The Psalmists were good song leaders! 
3. PREPARATION
The song leader represents the church and Jesus Christ, and he should therefore be well prepared. He should be prepared week by week by prayerfully seeking the Lord’s will for the service, by choosing the songs prayerfully and wisely, by preparing his own heart before the Lord. 

He should also prepare himself by doing all he can to learn how to be a better song leader. 

It is not absolutely necessary that the song leader be able to read music, but it is a great advantage if he can. Learning how to read music is not that difficult if a person is willing to make the necessary effort. 

He should be prepared by studying the lyrics to songs and hymns and even the backgrounds to the songs. Pastor Ken Shaver, Greater Cumberland Baptist Church, Hopkinville, Kentucky, has led singing in large churches. He observes: “Another thing that I would mention is how important it is to learn the story behind the song. Knowing that H.G. Spafford wrote ‘It is Well’ after his children drowned in a shipwreck and that ‘Amazing Grace’ represents the testimony of a former slave trader, I believe adds so much depth to the songs. 101 Hymn Stories and 101 More Hymn Stories by Kenneth W. Osbeck (Kregel Publications) are both excellent publications.” 

The song leader should also be prepared by understanding how to discern the difference between sacred and contemporary music. (We recommend the video series Music for Good or Evil, available from Way of Life Literature.)

Consider the following testimony of a song leader who is promoting hymns and avoiding CCM and who is doing the necessary preparation to be an effective leader:

“I’ve really enjoyed leading the music for our church. We use sound hymns. No CCM and no songs by CCM artists. That has caused a little angst as I’ve pushed back and denied some songs that people wanted to do for specials. (I always ask, unless I already know, who the author is, and if I don’t know the name immediately I look them up before approving or disapproving. I usually know the name immediately, having read all of your published materials on the music issue). Pastor has stood on the same position, and we haven’t allowed CCM to go forward. I keep track on a spreadsheet of the songs we’ve sung, how often and what dates so I can vary them a bit. As a congregation, we’ve learned several songs that are new to the Church. I also plan the songs based on the sermon topics, attempting to tie them to the progressive idea of the message step-by-step by song. (This is harder to do sometimes than it sounds; sometimes there is a lot of overlap between songs and ideas, but they are always tied to the message topic one way or another.) I also try to vary the way we sing (women doing some verses, men others, etc.) as well as providing some brief information from time to time about a hymn, its author or about a passage from Scripture tied to the hymn, or about the words we are singing to get people to think about them. I think it has really improved our song service. I used your message on song leading to do this, and I believe that it has really improved the service and increased the Church’s love of hymns. I think the reason many churches don’t do music better is because it is seriously time consuming. I spend an hour and a half to two hours a week planning the songs to try and make sure it is as edifying and proper as possible. It’s no light task. Each week I prepare a Music Ministry Sheet, and when I take my family to visitation on Saturday morning, we go early and stuff Sunday’s bulletins with the Sheet so everyone has it.” 
4. EDIFICATION 
1 Corinthians 14 is about church services and spiritual gifts, and the theme is edification. Twenty times in that chapter we find the words “edify,” “know,” and “understand.” Paul says, “Let all things be done unto edifying” (1 Cor. 14:26). 

This means that music used in church services should not be for entertainment. That is not the purpose of church services. The objective is spiritual edification. 

According to Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16, our music should minister in three directions: toward the Lord (Eph. 5:19), toward ourselves (Eph. 5:19), and toward others (Col. 3:16). 

This means that each song should be selected because of its message. If the message is weak, there is little or no edification. 

Further, if the message of the song is spiritual but couched in words that are not understood by the congregation, there is still no edification. Many of the old hymns use words that must be explained. The song “Beulah Land,” for example. What is Beulah? Unless the people know the meaning of that word, the song will be nearly meaningless. There is the same problem with “Here I raise mine Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’m come” in the song “Come Thou Fount.” The song “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” contains these words: “Lord Sabaoth is His name, from age to age the same…” Unless the people know what Sabaoth means, they will not be edified by that part of the song. 

It is the song leader’s job to explain such things in a concise manner. I don’t mean that he takes 10 minutes to discuss each song. That can become tedious and can discourage the people. The song service is not about the song leader explaining things; it is about actually singing the songs of Zion to one another and to the Lord (Eph. 5:19). The song leader must be careful that he not interpret the service continually with lengthy testimonies and discussions, but it is important to take a moment to define lyrics that might not be understood and to briefly reinforce the message of the songs.

The people need to be taught and reminded to think about the words of the songs. No matter how spiritual the songs are, if the people are not meditating on the message, no edification is accomplished. It is a song leader’s job to lead the people in this matter, to help them focus their attention, not to berate them but to encourage and lead them.

Something as simple as this can do the job: “Folks, let’s sing unto the Lord today. Let’s put aside the cares of life and turn out hearts to Christ. Let’s think about the words of these glorious songs and let the message sink down into our hearts.” 
5. SPIRITUALITY
The Lord Jesus Christ said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (Jn. 4:24). 

Our song services should be spiritual. The music should not please the flesh, should not be worldly. In this day when the world’s music is creeping into the Lord’s house, song leaders must be on guard continually against this type of thing. If it sounds like the world’s dance or sensual entertainment music, it is not fitting for the house of God! 

“And be not conformed to this world…” (Romans 12:2).

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:15-16). 

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4).
6. TRUTH
Not only are we to worship God in spirit but also in truth (John 4:24). Thus all of the songs should be doctrinally sound, conforming to the truth of God’s Word. The song leader should go through the lyrics of each song, making sure that it is preaching truth. This is true for the older hymns as well as for the newer ones. For example, the chorus to the song “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” says, “For the darkness shall turn to dawning, and the dawning to noonday bright, and Christ’s great kingdom shall come to earth, the kingdom of love and light.” The second verse says, “We’ve a song to be sung to the nations that shall lift their hearts to the Lord, a song that shall conquer evil and shatter the spear and sword.” That presents the unscriptural post-millennial view of prophecy, that the return of Christ’s kingdom will be gradually brought in as the gospel overthrows the evils of this world. The song “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” by Charles Wesley has the Methodist doctrine of a second blessing and entire sanctification in the second verse: “Let us find that second rest; take away our bent to sinning…”

An example of a popular contemporary song that contains false teaching is “Majesty.” The author, Jack Hayford, is a popular Pentecostal preacher who believes in tongues speaking, healing in the atonement and such, and his song reflects his theology. The song says, “Majesty, kingdom authority…” What is this kingdom authority? It is the unscriptural charismatic doctrine that believers have apostolic authority here and now. 

Thus the song leader must ever be on his guard against false doctrine, so that we are worshipping God in truth. 
7. ENTHUSIASM AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
There is no reason why our song services should be boring, and the song leader has a lot of responsibility in this regard. If he has no enthusiasm and leads in a boring manner, the congregation will probably reflect that. 

Pastor David Earnhart, who has been in the ministry for many years, observes: “I ALWAYS avoid scolding the crowd for not singing! That only makes them resent me! You must give them a positive reason (surely there are many!) for singing heartily. And repeating old clichés (‘Folks, let’s just raise the roof on this verse’) SOON becomes old, and does not work. The song leader must help interpret the meaning of the song and why it should be sung with enthusiasm. That always brings better results.” 
8. WISDOM
An important part of a song leader’s job is choosing the songs, and this requires that he understand the different categories and purposes of the songs. Ephesians 5:19 gives two basic purposes for Christian singing: “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” One purpose is to exhort and encourage and instruct one another in Christ, and the other purpose is to praise the Lord. There are songs directed toward man and others directed toward God. The songs and hymns in a standard hymnbook in Baptist churches can be grouped into one of these general categories.

The second broad category is that of “singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” There are four basic types of worship songs and hymns that come under this category: (1) those with lyrics that are directed to God or in direct praise about God; (2) those that are meditative and that reflect upon God; (3) those that are testimonies about God, and (4) those that are prayers to God.

Some hymns are a combination of encouragement to the believer and worship directed to God. “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” is an example of this. The lyrics are all directed to Christ, and sometimes they remind us of his tender care and sometimes they are pure worship: “Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus, Thou hast bought us, Thine we are…”

If we are going to worship God in song we have to use songs that are truly worshipful. 

A proper selection of songs and hymns is therefore basic. The song leader must understand the purpose of the various songs and hymns and make a wise, Spirit-led choice for each service.
9. SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT 
Those who are in charge of the church’s music must have spiritual discernment so they can select godly songs and reject those that are worldly and that appeal to the flesh. One of the chief ways that contemporary music enters churches is through the specials. I witnessed this on a recent preaching trip to 12 churches in three countries. About half of the churches allowed special music that was at least mildly contemporary. In each of these cases, the congregational music was traditional, while the special music was contemporary. I learned that the men in charge of the music did not know how to discern contemporary music. 

A friend wrote recently, “‘In Christ Alone’ is a song that has been sung several times at our church. This song was popularized by Michael English (CCM) and was written by Shawn Craig of the CCM group Philips, Craig and Dean. It takes a strong pastor and a strong song leader to help guard from the wrong music coming in.” (The song “In Christ Alone” by Shawn Craig should not be confused with the song by the same name written by Getty/Townend.)
10. PATIENCE AND HUMILITY
The following suggestions were given to me by a song leader in Canada: 

“In my 10-years as a song leader, and at times a choir director and ensemble leader, I found that ‘working with people’ was an important skill. With regard to leadership, instead of being demanding or simply expecting, patiently work with the pianist. Plan ahead and give the numbers to your pianist well in advance. Encourage your pianist. If there’s credit to dole out or blame to assign, take the blame for yourself and dole out the credit to the musicians. Too often I’ve seen a song leader stop, stare, or comment when the pianist made a mistake which subsequently embarrassed the leader. Don’t take your embarrassment out on the musician. Be flexible and don’t draw attention to others’ mistakes (as if to make sure that everyone knows the mistake wasn’t yours). Better yet, learn not to be embarrassed. Kill your pride, and let accidents and mistakes roll off of you graciously. A gracious attitude toward mistakes encourages the musicians to keep trying, knowing that a mistake or two isn’t the end of the world. When I first started song leading, the pianist at my home church was very unskilled (having just taken up the piano) and very uncertain about what skills she had. She would often get the timing wrong. For a time, I picked only songs she felt comfortable playing, and at times my arms waved in submission to her timing. We learned to sing it her way, without any public comment or criticism from me. I just tried to work graciously with whatever happened. As her skill improved, I could point out the timing issues, which she could now properly address. Because her heart was dedicated to serving the Lord, she practiced and practiced until she became a good church pianist. But, in the beginning, I submitted myself to her and worked with her within her abilities, to help her get up to speed. It was an important lesson for me, as a young man, to submit to others rather than lord over them.”
11. LIBERTY AND DIVERSITY
Too many churches are stuck in a rut with their song services. “Victory in Jesus” is a wonderful song, but when it is sung every week for fifty years, even a wonderful song can grow tiresome! There are hundreds of songs in the traditional sacred hymnbooks, but many churches sing only a few of them. Variety is the spice of life. The largest book in the Bible is Psalms, and God has provided 150 different psalms in this inspired hymnal. 
Suggestions for Introducing Variety into a Song Service
New songs should be introduced regularly and then sung frequently until they become an integral part of the church family’s ever-enlarging song repertoire. 

One of the best hymnals with the largest selection of songs that we have seen in one volume is SONGS AND HYMNS OF REVIVAL. It is published by North Valley Publications, Santa Clara, CA (We don’t recommend the music published by Golden State Baptist College.) Majesty Music’s hymnal Majesty Hymns contains many beautiful songs which were written in the last few decades. (We don’t recommend Majesty Music’s latest hymnal Rejoice Hymns, as it contains many contemporary worship songs by Getty/Townend and others. It is sad to see Majesty Music moving in this direction.) This music is contemporary in the sense that it is new but it is not contemporary in style. 

Pastor David Earnhart says: “For many years we have used the Chorus of the Month. And don’t forget the ‘old songs.’ I have often used songs like ‘Thank You Lord for Saving My Soul.’ Last year many raised their hands to indicate they did not know that song (even if it was ‘old hat’ to us old-timers!). This brings new Christians into the ‘common fold’ of music shared by Christians over many miles, and even generations.”

Pastor Don Williams, Believers Baptist Church in Winona Lake, Indiana, says: “As for learning new songs, my family regularly picks out a new song from our hymnal and works on learning it for a couple weeks. Then we introduce it to the congregation as a special and begin to sing it in the song services. Our church has learned a lot of new songs that way.”

Singing Scripture is a wonderful way to praise the Lord and edify the saints. During the Sunday evening services, for example, some churches sing Scripture songs. Two sources for these are North County Baptist Church, 221 W. 9th Ave., Escondido, CA 92027 and Tri-City Baptist Church, 4500 Selsa Rd., Blue Springs, MO 64015. Not only do these introduce variety within the music program, but nothing surpasses the actual words and verses of Scripture for doctrinal purity. 

Even the most familiar songs can be made more interesting by an imaginative change in the manner of presentation. There are endless means of singing old songs in new ways (without going contemporary). (1) Musicians can drop out while the congregation sings a capella. (2) One verse can be sung by the women, the next by the men. (3) One verse can be sung by the young people, another by the old people. (4) The choir, singing group, or soloist can be accompanied by the congregation in places. (5) An instrument can play the first stanza and chorus and then the congregation can come in and sing. (6) The timing of the song can be altered. (7) The chorus can be sung with a little more enthusiasm and volume as the song progresses. (8) Some songs can be sung as a round (e.g., Mat. 6:33). (9) Some stanzas or the chorus can be slowed down in tempo to allow the people to better think about the words.

The song service can be spiced up with the multiplication of musical instruments. Some of the most enjoyable song services I have participated in have been those accompanied by small orchestras. The Majesty Hymnal offers complete orchestrations for each song in the volume.

There can be a focus on worship songs in some services, and the song leader can work toward getting the people to really worship the Lord by singing the songs to the Lord from the heart. Hymns directed to the Lord include the following:

Some hymns are a combination of singing to the brethren and singing directly to the Lord. Examples are “Day by Day,” “Living for Jesus,” and “I’m Pressing on the Upward Way.”
12. A BODY MINISTRY
The song service is not just about one man leading; it is a ministry of the entire church and the more the whole church is involved, the better.

“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

One song leader made the following good suggestion:

“I would say to let the people be involved. Periodic singspirations, where the congregation gets to choose songs, is a huge boost. People love it because they get to pick their favorites. Kids really get into it. I would also say when people want to sing a certain hymn, if you can work it in without doing violence to the song service, do so. It invests them in it. One human tendency is to refuse that because we want to be in charge. Relax that grip and let the body parts have a say now and then. They will grow more in love with the service that way.”

Once a month our church has a song service in which the people take turns quoting or reading a favorite verse and then choosing a hymn. We sing the first two stanzas of the hymns to allow more people to participate.
CONCLUSION
I will conclude with these comments from Missionary Doug Hammett: “Keep the service alive! A song leader who is anticipating meeting with the Lord in the service will display that in his countenance, tone of voice and attitude. It will catch fire with the people as well. Encourage the people to participate. Don’t berate them; encourage them. Keep the service warm! Speak to the people as friends. Don’t be afraid to encourage one person by name, all the others will pay close attention to what you are saying to him. Keep a record of what you sing and don’t get in a rut!!! Singing the same old songs all the time may be easy for you, but it will put the people to sleep mentally. Remember you are preparing for the preaching! Starting the service with lively music and bringing the mood to a thoughtful, reflective manner before the message is a good plan.”
