The internationally acclaimed secular rock group U2, led by the Irish-born Bono, has come out in favor of repealing Ireland’s Eighth Amendment, a pro-life law that “acknowledges the right to life of the unborn” and “guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.” The revelation has generated disappointment from followers who are baffled as to why anyone would support killing a baby.
The group posted a graphic to Twitter and Instagram on Tuesday that read “Repeal the 8th,” the words being written inside a red heart. The post refers to an upcoming referendum vote on May 25, in which residents will be asked whether or not to repeal Article 40.3.3 of the Irish Constitution, also known as the Eighth Amendment.
A yes vote would result in the replacement of the current text noting that the nation’s laws defend the right to life with a clause that reads, “Provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancy.”
It would also allow lawmakers to move forward with a proposed replacement for the current Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act, which bans abortion except for the purported instance of risking the life of the mother.
While U2’s post generated over 18,000 likes, it also generated much commentary, including from followers who were disheartened by the group’s stance. Some advised that they won’t attend their concerts anymore.
“Wow. Celebrating the taking of innocent lives? If ever someone lost their way. No innocent child deserves to be torn limb from limb and injected with poison to the heart. Why are you so blinded?” one commenter wrote.
“You were one of my favorite bands, and now one of my least favorite bands. Absolutely disgusting you would encourage the murder of millions of children. SHAME ON YOU,” another stated.
“This breaks my heart. I have loved and followed you for 20 years. I still love you, but I can’t follow you down this road. My tickets to upcoming shows will go unused,” a third remarked.
U2’s guitarist, known as Edge, told the Irish Mirror this week that he thinks that repealing the Eighth Amendment is “the smart thing to do.”
“It is huge, and I know there is a huge divergence of opinion on it, and I accept that,” he said. “And it is hard to take a stance without having to acknowledge there is another side to it, but I am for it and I support repeal. It is the smart thing to do.”
As previously reported, in 2015, Bono, who professes to be a Christian, also came out in support of a referendum to legalize same-sex “marriage” in the predominantly Roman Catholic Republic. He announced at a concert in Phoenix, Arizona that he was dedicating his song “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” to the Irish movement.
“If God loves us, whoever we love, wherever we come from, then why can’t the state?” Bono claimed.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not every one that saith unto me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in Heaven. Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? And in Thy name have cast out devils? And in Thy name done many wonderful works?’ And then will I profess unto them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, ye that work iniquity.’”

The influential Irish rock band U2 has tweeted support for repealing Ireland’s pro-life Eighth Amendment and legalizing abortion on demand. The amendment guarantees pre-born humans the right to life (“U2 Comes Out,” LifeSiteNews.com, May 2, 2018). The vote will occur on May 25. Three members of the band claim to be Christians, including the frontman Bono. U2 has a great influence in the contemporary worship movement. Bono is praised almost universally among contemporary and emerging Christians. Phil Johnson observes that “Bono seems to be the chief theologian of the Emerging Church Movement” (Absolutely Not! Exposing the Post-modern Errors of the Emerging Church, p. 9). Eugene Peterson, author of The Message, says U2 has a prophetic voice to the world; he claims that Bono is a prophet like John the Baptist (foreword toGet Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalog). Yet Bono lives in blatant contradiction to the reality of biblical grace, and not only in the matter of killing unborn babies. He is described in the following passage: “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate” (Titus 1:16). Much of Bono’s language cannot be printed in a Christian publication. In 2006 Bono said, “I recently read in one of St. Paul’s letters where it describes all of the fruits of the spirit, and I had none of them” (“Enough Rope with Andrew Denton,” March 13, 2006). In October 2008, Fox News reported that Bono and rocker friend Simon Carmody partied with teenage girls on a yacht in St. Tropez (“Facebook Pictures Show Married U2 Singer Bono’s Rendezvous with Sexy Teens,” Fox News, Oct. 27, 2008). U2’s Christian supporters tout the band’s “biblical” lyrics as evidence of the reality of their Christianity. But U2’s ambiguous lyrics do not present a clear Christian message, and the few songs that do mention Christ typically do so in a strange, unscriptural manner. “The listener senses something religious is being dealt with but can’t be quite sure what” (Steve Turner, Hungry for Heaven, p. 172). They never preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in a plain manner so that their listeners could be born again. They pose moral questions in some of their songs, but they give no Bible answers. Bono’s view of the Bible was stated in a December 2017 interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “The person who wrote best about love in the Christian era was Paul of Tarsus, who became Saint Paul. He was a tough ——. He is a superintellectual guy, but he is fierce and he has, of course, the Damascene experience. … Now, it doesn’t cure him of all, of what he thinks of women or gay people or whatever else, but within his context he has an amazingly transcendent view of love”(“Bono: The Rolling Stone Interview” with Jann Wenner, Dec. 27, 2017). So according to Bono, the apostle Paul needs to be cured of his view of women and gay people and other things.
