USA – -(Ammoland.com)- H.R.38, a bill “To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide a means by which nonresidents of a State whose residents may carry concealed firearms may also do so in the State,” was introduced Tuesday by North Carolina
Rep. Richard Hudson. The bill was referred to the House Judiciary Committee for
further action.
“It
will provide law-abiding citizens the right to conceal carry without
worrying about conflicting state codes or onerous civil suits,” Hudson, a
member of President-elect Donald Trump’s Second Amendment Coalition noted. “[It will ensure] our Second Amendment right doesn’t disappear when we cross state lines.”
Also known by its short title, the “Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017,’’ the text of the bill, available as a pdf file on Rep. Hudson’s official House website,
will codify that a person “carrying a valid license or permit which is
issued pursuant to the law of a State and which permits the person to
carry a concealed firearm or is entitled to carry a concealed firearm in
the State in which the person resides, may possess or carry a concealed
handgun … in any State that …. has a statute under which residents of
the State may apply for a license or permit to carry a concealed
firearm; or … does not prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms by
residents of the State for lawful purposes.
“A person who carries
or possesses a concealed handgun … may not be arrested or otherwise
detained for violation of any law or any rule or regulation of a State
or any political subdivision thereof related to the possession,
transportation, or carrying of firearms unless there is probable cause
to believe that the person is doing so in a manner not provided for by
this section,” the bill elaborates. It also provides for “damages or
other appropriate relief” for “[a] person who is deprived of any right,
privilege, or immunity secured by this section, under color of any
statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage of any State. Left
intact would be state-specific prohibitions and restrictions on private
and state properties.
The National Rifle Association was quick to weigh in with strong support.
“Congressman
Hudson’s legislation provides a much needed solution to a real problem
for law-abiding gun owners,” Institute for Legislative Action executive
director Chris Cox said.
“The
Hudson bill would ensure that victims of crime like Pennsylvania
concealed carry holder Shaneen Allen do not face decades of
imprisonment, merely because they took an erroneous turn into another
state,” Erich Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America stated
in announcing GOA’s “strong support” for the legislation. “This
legislation would simplify the puzzling variation of concealed carry
across the states and make America safer by letting citizens defend
themselves while they travel.”
This is not Hudson’s first attempt at passing such a bill. A similar effort from 2015
was introduced and died without being enacted. With Republicans
enjoying majorities in the House and Senate, and with Donald Trump ready
to assume the presidency, all strongly enabled by gun owner support,
all excuses for not passing the bill this time will ring hollow. But
your help is needed.
Understanding that some politicians will
still need to be motivated, readers here can get involved by contacting
their representatives – at least the ones worth contacting – and letting
them know their support and co-sponsorship are expected. This can be
done either via their official web pages, or, as more constituents are
using, via their social media feeds (such as the way I put my congressman on notice
on Twitter). And for those living in districts or states where the
representatives are enemies of the right to keep and bear arms, there’s
nothing stopping you from contacting representatives in other states who
are amenable to being persuaded (and a good indicator for that is their GOA grade).

Former Alaska Governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah
Palin (shown) has said that the United States should get out of the
United Nations and the UN should get out of the United States. Palin
made her remarks during a December 29 interview on Breitbart News Daily
with Breitbart London Editor-in-Chief Raheem Kassam.
During the interview, Palin spoke extensively about the downside of
U.S. membership in the UN and called for Americans to reevaluate our
membership in the world body. “I think many of us have called for
America to really step up and consider what it is that we are funding
and supporting via the UN, and how it works so hard really against U.S.
interests, and just saying — look what the U.K. just did,” Palin said,
referring to the Brexit vote wherein British citizens voted to leave the
European Union.
Palin saw Britain’s Brexit vote as an inspiration for the United
States to exit the UN (which some term an “Amexit”): “So when the U.K.
made its move, it was just another reason to call yet again for the U.S.
to get the heck out of the UN and get the UN out of the U.S. Let’s get
going on putting America first so that we can sweep our own porch before
telling other nations how to sweep theirs.”
During the interview, Palin criticized Secretary of State John Kerry
for “his desire to essentially cave to other countries,” and tied
Kerry’s internationalist sentiments to the presence of the UN on U.S.
soil. She observed:
Though conservatives have long been critical of the UN and have
advocated U.S. withdrawal from the world body, the UN came under
increased condemnation on December 23 after the Security Council passed a
resolution that described Israeli settlements in occupied areas of the
West Bank and East Jerusalem as a “flagrant violation” of international
law. The Obama administration was also criticized by the leaders of
Israel and Israel’s supporters in the United States for failing to use
its veto power on the Security Council to kill the resolution, but
opting to abstain from the vote, thereby allowing it to pass.
We concluded our December 27 report about that UN resolution by noting:
Two days after that article was posted, Palin, in her interview,
advocated precisely the same thing and suggested two ways the incoming
Trump administration should handle the United Nations:
By saying that “We the People” should rise up and make getting the
United States out of the United Nations part of the political revolution
that just elected Trump as president, Palin has echoed a decades-long
campaign waged by The John Birch Society (JBS — the grassroots
educational and action organization with which The New American is affiliated) to accomplish that goal.
A brief summary of the Get US out! of the United Nations campaign on the JBS webpage notes:
Palin’s advice that “We the People” rise up and make getting the
United States out of the United Nations part of the political revolution
is excellent, but there is no need to reinvent the wheel by starting a
new campaign to that end. Opponents of U.S. membership in the UN can
take part in that signature campaign of The John Birch Society that has
been going on for over 50 years.
Sometimes, it takes an outrageous act on the part of the UN to
motivate someone to act. In Palin’s case, it was the Security Council’s
resolution on Israel. In this writer’s case, it was the UN’s outrageous
action on October 25, 1971 to expel one of its own founding members, the
Republic of China, and to admit in its place the bloody communist
regime known as the People’s Republic of China. Incensed by that action,
and knowing about The John Birch Society’s campaign to get the United
States out of the UN, we immediately decided to join the JBS and work
toward that end.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham says the incoming Trump

Appearing on CNN Wednesday, Graham attempted
to discredit Assange’s reputation and stated Trump should pay more
attention to US intelligence agencies.
“I don’t believe any American should give a whole lot of credibility

we’re the bad guys — not the Iranians, not the Russians, not the North

“Don’t listen to Julian Assange on anything.”
“I

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said she wants to
take France out of the Euro and reintroduce a new national currency
after a potential “Frexit.”
Le Pen, leader of France’s
far-right party National Front, said she would hold a referendum on
France’s place in the EU and pledged to hold a vote within six months of
winning the election.
“More and more European citizens realize their economies have been suffocated by the euro,” she told reporters at a Paris press conference. “The French want less Europe and more France.”
“I want a national currency with the euro as a common currency.”
Le
Pen is referring to the ECU (European Currency Unit) framework, which
is a basket of currencies that served as an aid in reducing fluctuations
between European state currencies for two decades until the euro was
introduced in 1999.
“The ECU existed alongside a national
currency,” Le Pen stated. “A national currency co-existing with a common
currency would not have any consequences for French daily life.”
Le
Pen’s deputy Florian Philippot explained that this proposal did not
mean that Le Pen has changed her position about leaving the euro.
“A
currency following the ECU model is not a currency you have in your
wallet or your bank account. It’s an accounting currency between
countries,” he said.
“It could be a model, maybe even a transitory one,” he added.
Le Pen’s economic adviser Philippe Murer echoed a similar sentiment.
“With
a return to the ECU, we could retain a trace of the euro,” said Murer,
who is also Le Pen’s assistant at the European Parliament.
“We will only determine these questions after consulting the French people. The nation must be able to decide for itself.”
The
two-round French presidential election will take place on April 23 and
May 7 of this year, with Le Pen set to win at least the first round of
voting. Her political rise has been propelled by deep discontent with
the refugee crisis, the economy, and EU trade policy.

RICHMOND, Va. — The Democratic governor of Virginia has vowed to veto a 20-week abortion ban if it makes it to his desk this year.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe told reporters that he believes that
such laws would adversely affect the state’s image and would harm
business in Virginia.
“I can’t sit back and have that sitting out the same time I
am traveling the globe recruiting businesses to Virginia,” he said,
according to the Associated Press. “If there’s something that would be
damaging toward business, and to our image around the country and the
globe, I’ll veto it. You bet I will.”
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
was recently proposed by Del. Dave LaRock, R–Loudoun County. It
prohibits abortions after 20 weeks gestation, or five months, with the
exception of medical necessity.
“No person shall perform or induce or attempt to perform or
induce an abortion upon a woman when it has been determined by the
physician performing or inducing or attempting to perform or induce the
abortion, or by another physician upon whose determination that
physician relies, that the probable postfertilization age of the woman’s
unborn child is 20 or more weeks,” it reads in part.
The bill notes that “by eight weeks after fertilization, the
unborn child reacts to touch” and “[a]fter 20 weeks, the unborn child
reacts to stimuli that would be recognized as painful if applied to an
adult human, for example, by recoiling.”
Lawmakers are expected to discuss the proposal on Jan. 11,
which would make performing an abortion on the 20-week child when there
is no threat to the mother a class 4 felony.
LaRock said that it is only humane to seek to restrict murder.
“It’s outrageous for a person with any compassion to turn a blind eye while this torture takes place,” he told reporters.
In addition to McAuliffe, Lt. Governor Ralph Northam has
also spoken out against the bill, opining after Ohio lawmakers passed a
similar measure last month that it would be wrong to disallow mothers to
end their pregnancies after 20 weeks if they are told that the child is
no longer viable. “Viable” simply means capable of living apart from
the mother, outside of the womb.
“What they just did in Ohio, they said that they’re going to
get between the doctor and the patient, and saying despite your
discussion—despite what you want to do—we’re going to make you continue
to carry that fetus that is no longer viable, that will not be able to
take in a breath of oxygen,” he said.
But pro-life groups, such as National Right to Life, called
Northam’s remarks “fear-mongering” and presenting “false narratives.”
“There’s just no question that Virginians want public policy
that understands the humanity of the unborn, and I think [they’ve] been
heading in that direction for a long time,” Victoria Cobb of The Family
Foundation also told the Burke Patch.
The concept of banning abortion after the stage of viability comes from the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade.
“Physicians and their scientific colleagues have regarded
[the concept of ‘quickening’] with less interest and have tended to
focus either upon conception, upon live birth, or upon the interim point
at which the fetus becomes ‘viable,’ … albeit with artificial aid,”
Justice Harry Blackmun wrote for the mostly Republican majority.
“Viability is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks) but may
occur earlier, even at 24 weeks.”
However, some believe that the Supreme Court’s logic was
faulty and contend that gestational age does not make the child less
human or unworthy of life. The film “Come What May,” produced by Patrick
Henry College students, centers on this argument.
“They tear the baby out of its only means of life support,
and say, ‘Wow, look at that; our machines can’t sustain it’s life,’ and
somehow, that proves it’s not viable?” Caleb Hogan, played by Austin
Kearney, declares in the production.
While some pro-life groups favor an incremental approach,
others state that abortion should be completely outlawed rather than
regulated. Jan. 22 marks 44 years since the passage of Roe, with an
estimated 60 million children aborted as a result.

WASHINGTON — A prominent professing atheist organization is asking President-elect Donald Trump to keep God out of this month’s inaugural ceremony by removing the Bible, prayer and the “so help me God” phrase of the oath from the event.
The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) recently sent a letter
to Trump to urge him to change his plans for the inauguration. It
asserted that the Constitution is secular in nature and “contains no
directive to swear to a deity or to place a hand on a Bible.”
“The ‘so help me God’ tradition violates the spirit of our
secular Constitution in the very act of promising to uphold it. The
Constitution prohibits rather than mandates religious oaths,” the group
asserted.
“In its altered, religious form, the oath has become a
symbol of the disregard many in our nation have shown for our secular
constitutional principles. Reciting the presidential oath in its
original form would be an important symbolic step toward divorcing
American politics from religion,” it said.
FFRF also asked Trump to pull the prayer portion of the event, which, as previously reported,
will feature an ecumenical assortment, including Franklin Graham,
prosperity preacher Paula White and others. Some spiritual leaders will
read from Scripture at the inauguration, such as prominent Catholic
Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Jewish Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon
Wiesenthal Center.
“If you wished to hold a private religious convocation to
personally celebrate your inauguration with religion, of course we would
have no objection based on the Establishment Clause,” the letter,
signed by Co-Presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, outlined.
“But we and our membership do most strenuously object to turning
a secular event into a religious circus.”
“You were not elected pastor in chief, but president of all
the people,” they said, repeating a phrase many Christians often
contended during Trump’s campaign. “Prayer hosted by the government
should not be part of taking a ceremony about pledging fealty to a
secular Constitution.”
The organization likewise asked Trump not to take his oath on the Bible, but instead on the Constitution.
It is not yet known whether or not Trump plans to respond. As previously reported, FFRF made a similar request in 2012 for Barack Obama’s second inauguration ceremony, but it was disregarded.
In his first inaugural address
in 1789, the nation’s first president, George Washington, declared,
“[I]t would be peculiarly improper to omit in this first official act,
my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the
universe, who presides in the Councils of Nations, and whose
providential aids can supply every human defect, that His benediction
may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the
United States, a government instituted by themselves for these essential
purposes: and may enable every instrument employed in its
administration to execute with success, the functions allotted to His
charge.”
“[W]e ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious
smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the
eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained,” he
proclaimed.
